  1. manually update the windows update agent to the latest version.Download it,Save it to your computer,then double click to install.Restart the computer.Try updating again.Be sure automatic updating is turned on both through adminstrative services and control panel/turn automatic updating on or off.It may still take some time to scan.If this does not work for you,try plugging your computer directly into your router/modem.I have seen this issue many times.In fact,i had this same issue on windows 7x64 just recently after restoring my computer back to factory settings.I installed the latest wu and plugged it directly into the modem/router.Took about 20 minutes or so,but it finally worked.You should be able to get the latest update agent here.Just download the appropriate update for you windows version. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/946928
