  1. Greetings guys (and gals!)

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I used to have GoBack installed but got a lot of crap at times, so that is why I'm looking for something else that does NOT take over the hard drive (forget what it's called technically, but it somehow "locks" the drive)

Nope ... I'm looking for something more than a simple registry/settings restore (I find the built in Windows "scanreg /restore" excellent for that)

Also, I do have a complete image on CD using the superb Acronis TruImage. However, that is only as good as when the image was made. And it's too much of a hassle - not to mention waste of CD's - to make a fresh image every day. This is why a program that takes snapshots automatically is the ideal thing to have.

So ... the MS "Restore points" idea is what I'm really after. BUT ... as suggested above, it appears that this has never been successfully installed on a Win98se O/S.

Surely ... someone ... somewhere ... must have invented a proggie that can duplicate what System Restore does ???

And talking about the old PowerQuest "Second Chance" ... would anybody by any chance know of a link where it can still be downloaded from ?

    Thank folks.

  2. Dear Forum Members

I wonder if there is a good program that will enable us to do a "system restore" on Win98se (like the ME and XP have)

I do know about GoBack, and many years ago PowerQuest had a program called Second Chance (but, cab't find that anywhwre to download on the net anymore)

    Any ideas?

Do you know of any other system-restore-type programs?

A freebie would be nice ... but I'd also like to know about any other programs available.

Your comments and input will be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

  3. Dear Forum Experts

    ( ... and all others! :D )

    Greetings!

The following is not an "urgent problem" ... just annoying.

Recently, I formatted my hard drive and did a completely fresh install of Win98se, IE 6 SP1, went to Wiundows Update and have downloaded all the fixes and security goodies etc.

Everything works like a dream. But ...

You know when you want to download, say, a .pdf file from a web-site? You right-click and on the drop-down menu select "Save target as ... "

Well ... I can't do that because it's "greyed out"

I'm sure there must be one incredibly simple tweak or registry line I can modify to make this appear in the menu again.

    Any suggestions ???

    Thanks guys 'n girls.

    Very best wishes,

    Dr. Mac

  4. Greetings guys and girls

    Many thanks for your suggestions.

    * Try another browser. O.K. Easy enough to do. I normally use IE but also have the latest Firefox installed.

    * RAM? Hmm!!! Very small! Only 198mb!!! But that's a vast improvement from what I had a few months ago - 64mb. But it could well be something worth looking into. Unfortuanely I don't have a lot of money to go and buy new stuff, but I wonder if installing on of those programs to "maximise your memory" might help?

    * Update MS-Office. Phew! Now you ARE talking big money! I have Office 2000 installed with the Office SP1a update. There is also the SP3 update, but it makes a lot of changes and I have not got around to reading what all those are yet!

Firewall? Zone Alarm Pro. Also, they released a new version about a week ago which I have updated to.

    Greetings agaqin!

I downloaded TweakDUN (by the way, the link you gavce me doesn't work, but it was easy enough to google for and find. In fact, I only installed it about ten minutes ago - so too soon to tell if it's going to make a difference.

Thanks for the "webcheck" tip. I'm going to try that right now.

    Thanks everybody! Much appreciated.

    Best wishes ...

  5. Dear Forum Members

I wonder if you could offer some suggestions ...

I'm running Win98se (fully patched and updated from the Windows Update site) I surf with broadband and have an excellent ISP who provides this.

Also, I am not connected to a LAN or anything like that ... just a single-user, single PC.

    PROBLEM :

I can surf the 'net for some time (it varies ... sometimes half-an-hour - sometimes longer) but slowly ... slowly ... pages load slower and slower and there are times when eventually it becomes completely non-responsive. Kinda like surfing freezes up!

I've tried the usual - clearing the cahce ... clearing all cookies etc ... but this does not help.

Microsoft described a problem like this with network connections (which a broadband is) and released a NDIS patch - 243199

However, this patch has not made any difference at all ... after a time, things still get slower and slower.

Also, sometimes if I'm connected and surfing fast - then, say, switch to Outlook Express and compose an e-mail, or go into Word and type up a document - when I then try to surf again ... problem! Either ultra-slow or a total non-activity.

It's almost like the longer I spend connected and surfing, something starts to get "clogged up" until it freezes surfing. (Remember, I have tried clearing the cahces, deleting cookines etc many many time - it doesn't "unfreeze" things)

If I disconnect form the Internet and reboot - bingo - back to ultra-fast surfing again. But then ... sometimes after a long time surfing ... slow ... slow ... slow!

    Any help and suggestions please?

    Thank you

    Best wishes

    Dr. Mac

  6. Greetings guys

(Well ... I'm assuming you are both guys!!! :D )

    Prathapml :

Thanks for the suggestion ... that's the sort of thing I would love to have )Bart's PE) but unfortunately ...

    1) I don't have any of the WinXP CD's (I only have Win98se)

    2) I've looked through just a tiny bit of the instructions on how to build a CD, and I started to go weak in the knees. I'm afraid I'm nowhere near THAT level of knowledge or expertise

(Now ... if somebody was kind enough to offer me an ISO of an already completed project ... with the Nero plug-in included .... :) )

    Jaclaz :

    Hello once again!

Thanks for the link ... I will take a look.

Take care chaps, and with my very best wishes ...

  7. Greetings!

    You said :

"I suppose you are using the Motto Hairu driver with DOs aspi."

    ? ? ? ?

Oops! Sorry ... I'm a real newbie at this "buring files to USB in DOS" thing, so must admit I don't know WHAT you mean !!!

BUT ... I'll go and take a lok at the link you provided and see what's going on there.

Many thanks for taking the time to post your reply and provide the link. Much appreciated.

    Best wishes,

    Dr. Mac

  8. Dear Forum Members

    Greetings.

At long last ... I've eventually found a boot floppy that allows me to access my external USB CD-RW from DOS! :D

However, I'd really like to know how I can copy and burn files - from DOS - to my external CD-RW (USB)

Acronis True Image does a perfect job, and they have obviously got some sort of generic driver that allows you to burb CD'S ... BUT ... it only burns a complete hard drive image.

What I'd like to do is to be able to boot off a floppy (or, like Acronis, a few floppies) select certain files (in DOS ... you see ... assuming I'm in trouble and Windows won't boot) ... and then burn them onto a blank CD.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Best wishes,

    Dr. Mac

Edit : Sorry - forgot to say : I'm using Win98 SE, have an External USB Memorex CD-RW

  9. Greetings

I've had problems like that as well !

Don't know if System Mechanic has anything to do with YOUR incident ... but in the past if I've had wrong icons on my desktop, or double-clicking an icon brings up something DIFFERENT, the little program "TweakUI" has always sorted it out.

If you do not have thisw installed, you can get it here (free) :

    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui

Make absoolutely sure you download the Windows 98 version.

Instruction on how to install it are on this site, but basically, it's not the usual way ... you have to RIGHT-click on the .inf file, and on the pop-up menu click on "Install"

A shortcut is placed in Control Panel when you want to use it.

Look for the TweakUI part that says "Repair" ... and you'll find one of the options is to sort out your icons.

    BINGO! :)

Good luck and best wishes ...

  10. Dear Forum Members

If I went to the Microsoft web-site today, and downloaded IE SP1, would it INCLUDE all the security patches and updates that have been released ... OR would it be just the same as insatalling the version I've got on a six month old PC Magazine cover disk CD ???

In other words, does Microsoft update their IE downloads each time a security fix is released?

    Thanks for your replies.

    Best wishes,

    Dr. Mac

  11. Ah! ha! I wonder if anybody here has GoBack 2.1e ??? :o

That was WAY back in the 1997's when it was owned by a company called Wild File.

Never EVER had any problems with that on Win98 SE ...

But ... then I "upgraded" to version 3

    Hooooo boy !!!!

After having to eventually do a complete "nuke" and then the Maxtor low-level format, I installed my O/S again ... and went back to good old 2.1e
