  1. It didn't work for Microsoft, but it may work for YOU, for me its just for FUN. Well, I don't have to worry about it. I'm a drummer and drummers get all the girls. Anyway, I KNOW THAT IT WAS JUST FOR FUN. I'm not stupid. LOL Did you think that I didn't know that? lol! I mean, it's obvious! I'm actually insulted that you felt like you had to tell me.
  2. LOL Then, challenge someone to sit at your computer and find your 1-pixel Start Menu button. They get an internet cookie if they can open your Start Menu with the mouse.
  3. The new Spring 2014 Update / Update 1 brought the start button with the shine affect. I don't know if SiB's shine effect depends on Update 1 being installed. I wouldn't think so. Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII with M.O.A.R. v9.0, dkp kernel dated 3/20/2014 and TWRP v2.7.0.0. Can you show us what this shine effect is supposed to look like? I'm at work so I can't do too much right at the moment, but in this video just after 2:40 it does it. Yep, that's precisely what I'm seeing, but of course without the accent color. I don't see that as a "shine", but hey.

  5. I'm not seeing it. What I am seeing on my Start Menu button is a dark accent that smoothly sweeps across the logo from left to right.
  6. Do you have animation turned off in SiB's options? Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII with M.O.A.R. v9.0, dkp kernel dated 3/20/2014 and TWRP v2.7.0.0. I don't see any animation option in SIB, but I do have animations turned off for the 'Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows' control panel settings. Perhaps that's it, as I only notice a very light flicker sometimes but not shine or animation. I think you're seeing the intended effect. It's not a flicker, but like how some logos will shine from left to right. Do you know what I'm talking about? The Start Menu button has that left-to-right type of effect, only I wouldn't call it a "shine" effect.
  7. Regarding the shine effect: watch for it the moment your mouse touches the Start Menu button.
  8. Aw. I think I screwed something up because now the only way I can uninstall it and install it is in Safe Mode. lol Oh well. At least it works and at least it's still awesome.
  9. Whatever you want to call it. I don't call it the Start Button since it's behavior is so different. Yeah, I wonder if even Microsoft has a name for it. Maybe it's the Start Button. Probably, I don't recall. I still haven't gotten past them declaring that "Metro" wasn't the official name of the new interface, when they switched it at the last moment - or actually IIRC a week or two after Windows 8 RTM'ed, to "Modern UI". The interface previously known as Metro. And now seems to be called "Start". lol I have a different name for it.

  11. Oh, that's a thumbnail? I just thought it was like some kind of pseudo Start Menu button. By the way: did you know that every once in a while, this will appear if you put my mouse down in the corner? I don't know how to get it to happen on demand yet, but I suppose I could try to figure out what triggers it.
  12. You can always go back to the old version if you have the installation file. I'd export the settings for your old one like TwoCables mentioned and then restore the old versions settings if you decide to go back to it, after uninstalling the newer SiB. No idea if it would just let you downgrade without uninstalling the new version first. The "shine" effect matches what stock 8.1 Update 1 includes for it's Start Screen button, which has moved from popping up in the corner to where the Start Button is usually. Microsoft describes it as a shine effect in their list of changes, if I remember correctly. Wait. So what did it used to do before? I'm too new to Windows 8.1 to know. I didn't even have Windows 8. I'm just trying out the 90-Day Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation. Windows 8 originally didn't have anything where the Start Button traditionally appeared. Instead, if you moved your mouse to the very bottom left corner of the screen, a thumbnail of the Start Screen would appear. If you left clicked it, it took you to the new interface Start Screen. If you right clicked it, then you got the same options you got by right-clicking the Start Button (or Start Menu) in StartIsBack, IF you have the option checked "Use Advanced Start Button context menu", with the addition of the "Properties" option since that's specific to configuring the Start Menu. It was still like this in Windows 8.1 until the Spring 2014 Update came out. That's at least partially why SiB had to be updated for full compatibility with the new update. Spring 2014 Update? Do you mean Update 1? I mean, I don't have Update 1 and I've never seen the thumbnail.

  14. In the changelog for version 1.6 it noted 'Default start button has shine effect' as a general improvement. I was wondering what the effect looked like before updating SIB. I think I see what it's talking about. It's extremely subtle and cannot be captured by a screenshot. I would need an extremely high-res 60 FPS video and I'd need to zoom in on the button. When I hover over it, a split second later I see like an extremely subtle effect that goes from the left to the right in a matter of about 250 milliseconds. I don't know if I'd call it a "shine" though. It's so subtle that I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't leaned in about 6 inches away from my monitor and studied what happens when I put my mouse over it. It doesn't repeat either: it just happens once and then I can only get it to do it again the next time I put my mouse over it. When I'm just sitting here relaxing, I don't really notice it unless I'm staring at it and watching for it.
  15. Do you mean the look of the standard Windows 7 button when hovering your mouse over it?
  16. In the next release of StartIsBack+, can you make the Start Menu search text black instead of light gray? Or, at least provide the option to change it? Edit: Also, where are the settings stored? I'd like to be able to format and start over without having to reconfigure StartIsBack+. Edit #2: Wait! I think I found it: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\StartIsBack There's another one in HKEY_USERS. It's under the extremely long string of numbers and letters that is NOT followed by "Classes". After that, it's Software\StartIsBack. I'm assuming though that all I need to save is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\StartIsBack. I'll do a quick test in a few minutes. Edit #3: Yep! I found it alright! So, I exported that key, uninstalled StartIsBack+ and said delete settings and license data, and then I rebooted (for good measure). Then, I installed StartIsBack+, canceled out of the configuraiton, double-clicked my exported Registry file and added it into the Registry, signed out of Windows and signed back in, and lo and behold, everything is back to the way I had it before! Well, except the Start Screen shortcut was pinned, but that's ok. That's just one thing to change instead of several things. lol I'm glad to have found this! Edit #4: I also prefer "Connect To" to not be shown, but it was not gone like I prefer. So, I found the line in my exported Registry file: "Start_ShowNetConn"=dword:00000001 It was set to 1 even though it should have been 0. So, I changed it to 0 in my Registry file so that it looked like this: "Start_ShowNetConn"=dword:00000000 Then I uninstalled and reinstalled StartIsBack just as before, applied my newly-modified Registry file and sure enough, it worked! Then, I noticed that my Updates preference wasn't remembered. So, I changed the following line: "AutoUpdates"=dword:00000001 My preference is "Never check for updates", and so I just changed the "1" over to "0" in my Registry file so that it looks like this: "AutoUpdates"=dword:00000000 Just to make sure it works, I uninstalled, reinstalled, applied my Registry file, and it worked! If I set it to 2 like this: "AutoUpdates"=dword:00000002 Then I get the "Notify you to download and install updates" setting. Slick. This is nice.
  17. I can't uninstall the current version of Old New Explorer. I am getting this: (OldNewExplorer32.dll) (OldNewExplorer64.dll) I want to uninstall it to see if it's the culprit of this problem: http://www.overclock.net/t/1480884/windows-8-1-problem-replace-or-skip-files-dialog-box-not-getting-focus-doesnt-open-on-top My friend tompsonn replied just now and said that he's had the same thing happen to him, and he's not using any third-party apps like this. ****. Oh well. I guess I no longer need to uninstall Old New Explorer! lol (I'd rather keep it anyway if possible, y'know?!) Of course, I'd still like it if this could uninstall just as easily as it installed. It's not nice when a problem like this exists. Edit: I figured it out. All I had to do was register these two DLLs. Then, I clicked Uninstall, rebooted, and presto chango it worked. lol Here's how to register these DLLs (any DLL, actually): Open either a Command Prompt (cmd.exe) as an administrator, or PowerShell as an administrator. Then, type regsvr32 and then the full path of the DLL in quotations (but quotes are NOT needed if the path has absolutely zero spaces in it, such as C:\Example\example2\filename.ext as opposed to C:\Example Folder\example folder 2\File name.ext). For example, this is mine: regsvr32 "D:\My Documents\Setup Files\OldNewExplorer\OldNewExplorer32.dll" Press Enter. regsvr32 "D:\My Documents\Setup Files\OldNewExplorer\OldNewExplorer64.dll" Press Enter The next time you install Old New Explorer, you will have to re-register these DLLs before uninstalling. So, if you want to install and uninstall 10 times in a row, then you will need to re-register these DLLs 10 times in a row. See?
  18. I think I found 2 bugs. First bug: As we know, hovering the mouse over an item with a name that's too long to display shows the name for 3 seconds. However, hovering my mouse over such items that are located inside a folder that's within another folder in the All Programs menu only shows the full name for about a half a second. It also happens if there's another folder within that folder (so, a folder within a folder within a folder). All items in the top-level folders inside of All Programs don't do it. They display the full name for 3 seconds on mouseover. Second bug: StartIsBack+ seems to be ignoring the following Registry settings most of the time, but not 100% of the time: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced - ExtendedUIHoverTime = 0 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop - MenuShowDelay = 0 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse - MouseHoverTime = 0 I showed all 3 here because I honestly don't know anymore which ones affect the menus and submenus in the Start Menu. In Windows 7, this results in all menus in the Start Menu appearing or opening the instant my mouse cursor touches them. This isn't always the case in StartIsBack+. Furthermore, hovering over All Programs sometimes doesn't do anything and I'm forced to click it. Other times, for some reason, it will open if I hover over it for about 1-2 seconds. Can these things be fixed?
  19. That's because the current version of StartIsBack came out before Update 1. So, a new version would need to be released that offers options for it.
  20. I would think that if it were to appear instantly on mouseover, then it would get in the way of StartIsBack's button.
  21. On the site's comments for that article, it appears about five months ago people started noting that the tweak doesn't work under Windows 8.1, but it appears that all along it was hit or miss for some people. I know what you mean re: when things come together. Yeah, y'know, it's funny: if it weren't for that tweak, I guess I wouldn't have formatted and started over a few times and then finally decided to disable Defender and Firewall like I have always done for Windows XP SP2 and 7. I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I just believed that Defender and Firewall would be better this time around, but nope: File Explorer is still blazing fast without them enabled. lol
  22. Yep! I'm just now 100% finished setting up the 90-day Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation and still no problems (I've completely "moved in" so to speak). Wow. I should say something to that Addictive Tips site. lol There's nothing sweeter than when everything comes together like this.
  23. I think I can happily report that I succeeded in fixing my problem by formatting, starting over, and not doing this tweak this time: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/prevent-windows-8-file-explorer-from-deleting-images-thumbnail-cache/ So far, so good. It's the only difference this time around. Plus, I think I solved the slow loading time in any File Explorer window without doing this tweak: I disabled Defender and Windows Firewall and now Windows 8.1 File Explorer is just as fast for me as Windows 7 Windows Explorer (which is extremely fast). Go figure. Unfortunately, I disabled both at the same time, so I don't know which one was the solution. I'm betting on Defender, but still. So yeah, I'd say that I owe it to StartIsBack+ 1.6 because if I didn't begin trying it out, then I never would have learned that that tweak is bad news! Oh, and I was having other stupid (but very annoying) problems that I think were totally solved by just not doing that tweak this time! In other words, I am pretty seriously considering paying the $2.99 for StartIsBack because now I'm beginning to think that Windows 8.1 isn't so bad. lol Sure, I could go with a free third-party Taskbar program, but all of the others require at least one extra process to run in the background. That just seems silly to me. I want this to be as native as possible, and that's exactly what I'm getting with StartIsBack. It's beautiful and sublime.
