  1. I guess from some of the posts, that most of yous guys are much younger than I am.
    Yep, after reading your post, I'd say it's a safe bet that I, at least, am much younger than you.
    I had a very agressive Comodore 64 business in the early 80's.
    I also had a very aggressive business in the early 80's. We called it grade school. :D
    One of these days I'll die and my brain will turn all green and mushy and 40 some odd years of experience as an electronics/computer tech will be Gone forever.  If I can pass along some of what I've learned before that happens.....well that's a good thing.  Right?
    Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is still considered bad form to ask "When you die, can I have your brain?" right?
    Without a degree, no institute of higher learning will hire me as an instructor, so here I am.......helping out wherever I can, for FREE.
    Geez. At a bargain-basement price like that, even I can afford your fees!

    In all seriousness though, welcome to the community. I'm sure your wisdom and experience will be an asset to us all. And I for one am not (quite) too proud to admit that sometimes I can use all the help I can get. :hello:

    Edit: Oh, and I love that signature line! :lol:

  2. can someone please help me about these tweaks?

    read here

    tnx

    Post #2
    these have been answered in the registry tweaks section a number of times.

    I'd start by looking in the regtweak sticky and then in the topics called reg tweaks.

    Yes there is a lot of them, 3 parts if i recall, and you may find some that you've not even heard or thougt of as well.

    Or,

    you could do manually, buy using regsnap when you select to enable/disable the option.

    Post #3

    i tried manually..no change, NEVER ****! I will look to these 3d but they are so loooong :huh:  :blushing:  Tnx however!!!

    Post #4

    so now i just need how to remove the Windows Catalog via reg or cmd file and how to set sliding effect that i don't find in the regtweaks 3d!

    What did I miss; you said this was already resolved?

  3. So the only way to have the Administrator only when installing XP is to do the unattended install?

    Well, not exactly. You could design the answer file to eliminate the prompt to create additional users and still leave the installation itself an attended process. But the answer file is the only way that I know of to eliminate that prompt, yes.

  4. Your best bet is to move the file to the $OEM$\$$ folder. This will copy it to the root of the system drive automatically during installation. You can then launch the file by adding the following to your answer file (WINNT.SIF):

    [GuiRunOnce]
    "%systemdrive%\menu.htm"

    Hope this helps.

  5. I had the exact same annoyance with a game I play that comes on 3 CDs. I was able to just copy the contents of all 3 CDs to a single folder on my hard drive and then burn that folder as a DVD. No guarantee that will work for you, but it did for me.

    Of course, I can't play the game without the original game CD, but that is another issue entirely. :)

  6. How does one become a General in this Army?

    What does it take to earn 1 star?

    What does it take to earn 2 stars?

    etc.? :P

    Well, reposting a question that has already been answered is a poor place to start.

    As gamehead already explained, the stars are linked to the number of posts a member has contributed. As he also already pointed out, we do not encourage mindless posting for the sole purpose of raising one's post-count.

    (Hooray, one more post for me :P)

  7. But in Add/Remove components, Windows Messenger isn't checked ...

    By default, Windows Messenger, like Windows Media Player and IE, cannot be removed via Add/Remove Windows Components. The checkboxes for these applications only indicate whether or not the visible access points (read: shortcuts) are present. If you want to remove Windows Messenger you must first make it visible in Add/Remove Windows components. I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction to do that, if needed. I would, but it is very late (early) and I'm too tired to figure it out again right now.

    Hope this helps.

  8. Addicting isn't a fair word really.  I am drawn to the community.  You can like a forum because your pals are there but at msfn, the only word that fits is community.  Look at where people are from.  Everywhere!  And they are all from one place.  MSFN.

    I've printed this one.

    It will become a famous quote.

    A famous quote when MSFN - in the future - will look back to its past, seeing how it has evolved.

    If I would change one word to that small speech... I'd ruin it!

    Amen, Bâshrat. Someone get that silver-tongued devil a medal or something. :D

    Seriously though, I couldn't agree more. A friend of mine pointed me to MSFN's world-class unattended Windows CD guide page after we got into a discussion about uA CDs in general. The guide led me to the forum, and the forum got me hooked.

    I don't post or visit quite as often as I did when I first joined up, but I am still drawn back here time and again. Thanks and congratulations to all those who have helped strive to make MSFN such a great community; you've done an amazing job! :thumbup

  9. that fixed it and it's now working perfectly as i want it the only exception being the computer name not being named as i specified in the winnt.sif!!!!!!!!!! any ideas????

    Was the PC named correctly before you made the latest modification? My best guess is that you have mistyped the line for specifying the PC name in WINNT.SIF. Here is the correct syntax:

    [UserData]
       ProductKey=ThisI-sWher-eYour-KeyGo-esSir
       FullName="User Name"
       OrgName="Company Inc."
       ComputerName=ComputerName

    My understanding is that the quotes around Full and OrgName are only required when inputing values that have spaces, but I leave them in regardless, just for consistancy's sake.

    If your WINNT.SIF entries match these ones, then there must be something else that is causing your error. Please post the specifics of your uA CD and hopefully we can help you sort it out.

  10. Hi,

    Is it possible to setup a new user and login as that new user THEN apply reg tweaks and app installations?

    If I am understand your intentions correctly, this is how I do it.

    Create the following two files in your $OEM$ folder:

    UserAccounts.cmd

    net user Username Password /add
    net localgroup Administrators Username /add
    net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited
    REGEDIT /S autologon.reg
    EXIT

    AutoLogin.reg

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "DefaultUserName"="Username"
    "DefaultPassword"="Password"
    "AutoAdminLogon"="1"

    Replace Username and Password with the respective names for your PC, then add the following line to cmdlines.txt:

    "useraccounts.cmd"

    Hope this helps.

  11. I apologize if this should have been a new post, but it's kinda been drilled into my head to add to a thread instead of starting a new one if at all possible. But this seems relevant to the reg. tweaks thread.

    I think I can actually add something new!  I recently Unzipped something in my root directory of my only hard drive (C:) (It created a folder called "Program") and got a message in the attached screen shot. (It shows up durring windows boot).

    ...but still annoying that it opens that folder.

    Any comments?

    No comment on the registry entry you mentioned, but I suspect the problem with the folder is linked back to the old 8.3 naming scheme used by DOS and some older applications. Under that naming scheme, C:\Program Files is renamed to C:\Progra~1. I've never been 100% sure of the way it works, but I suspect your new folder called Program would also be renamed, because of its similarity to the already truncated Program Files folder. I also suspect that it would be truncated to Progra~1, forcing the Progam Files folder to change its own truncated name to Progra~2. Any applications that referenced your Program Files folder by its truncated name would then be pointing to the wrong place.

    Let me know if that didn't make sense and I will try to clarify it.

  12. I need some more confirmation before making all these changes  :)
    I can confirm some of them, although one should keep in mind that I am far from a registry expert...
    Disable Alerter and Messenger Service: default in XP SP2 so it's only needed pre-SP2;
    Messenger Service is definitely disabled by default. Alerter I'm not sure about, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
    EnablePrefetcher 3 (boot and program prefetch): this setting is not the quickest option: 2 (boot only) is in my opinion;
    I agree on this one too. Prefetching every single program you ever run on your PC can cause the prefetch folder to become overly bloated.
    Broadband tweaks may not suit each one's settings and should really be applied after verifying the MTU value;
    Definitely true. I am not familiar with the particular tweak he is referencing, but every ISP is different, so optimum tweaking for each user is going to be different.
    Disable Security Center: the reg entries as such include settings to disable specific prompts: to do the former only requires turning off the service;
    True again. If the Security Center service is disabled, there is no need to disable each individual prompt (Anti-Virus, Automatic Updates and Firewall) that the Security Center offers. I would recommend that these tweaks be left in place, however, as they are useful to users like me who only want to disable some features of the Security Center and not the whole thing in its entirety.
    System Services tweaks: the following all have 00000002 = Automatic, shouldn't all these be 00000004?

    Disable Routing and Remote Access Service

    Disable Task Scheduler Service

    Disable Telephony Service

    Disable Routing and Remote Access Service

    Disable Imapi CD-Burning Service

    Disable SSDP Discovery Service

    Disable Universal Plug'n'Play Service

    Disable Background Intelligent Transfer Service (needs to be on for SP2 Windows Auto Updates)

    This is true as well. If the tweaks are going to be labeled "Disable," it only makes sense to assign the correct values to disable those services. My own tweak file contains a listing of many different services, and notes right at the start of the section the different values that can be assigned to achieve the desired effect.
    Do not use Simple File Sharing => add comment: does not work in XP HE
    Suppose it could be worth adding. It is true that Home Edition only supports Simple File Sharing.
    Clear recent documents when you log-off  -> if you apply:

    Disable Recent Documents History or NoInstrumentation tweak, then it shouldn't be necessary;

    I'm not sure about this one. I'm not enitely sure what gets cleared by these tweaks. I know recent document history for Windows itself as well as for individual applications is stored in the registry, but I'm unsure just how clean any of these tweaks will scrub it.
    Enable Quick Launch - there is a thread about some difference between SP1 v. SP2
    This tweak is mis-labeled. The binary value contained in that tweak is designed to make your Taskbar look exactly like the one from which that value was taken. This includes such things as which Toolbars are visible, what size they should be, what order the icons should be in, etc... The best way to use this tweak is to configure your Taskbar exactly the way you like it, and then export that value from your own registry for use in your tweak file. For links to several threads on this topic, see my previous post in this thread here.
  13. Well, just for giggles... since you asked Cartoonist... I reinstalled the update 885950 to see if it reproduced the problem... and it DID!

    Was it the host PC or the remote PC that you re-installed KB88590 on? You don't specify and it is the host PC specifially that I am interested in since I believe someone has already mentioned that reinstalling the fix on the remote PC caused the files to disappear again.

    Is there a way to 'undo' this hotfix on machines that were setup with ryanvms update pack slipstreamed?

    Well, unless someone has come up with a better response...

    For people who used RyanVM, only kb895900 was installed. kb885250 was considered "obsolete".

    How do i uninstall kb885250?

    You would have to check with Ryan on this. However, my best guess is that you can't. My understanding of Ryan's update packs is that they don't install the hotfixes. Rather, the fixes are actually integrated into the source files on the CD. This, I believe, would make uninstalling them impossible. Do a check in your Add/Remove Programs with the checkbox for Show Updates checked. Any updates installed via Ryan's pack will not be listed. Any that have been installed since the OS was installed with Ryan's pack will be.

  14. Well, it seems at long last we have found a solution to this problem. I will have to file this away somewhere so that if and when the problem crops up for me again, I will be able to solve it. Let me reiterate durex's thanks to all who contributed on this. And a big thanks to durex himself for finally getting frustrated enough to start it. :P

    Just to confirm, KB885250 installed on the client PC (the one from which the shares are being accessed) seems to be the cause of the missing or invisible files. Has anyone tested whether (re)installing KB885250 on the host PC makes any difference? Just want to make sure all possible scenarios have been covered.

    Cheers.

    Hey guys... just a follow up.

    I am still able to get to everything like it said two posts ago... but SOMETIMES when I click on some of the subfolders I get the error:

    "Z:\pictures\trips refers to a location that is unavailable.  It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network...."

    If I try a few times... or more likely just wait a few seconds and click again, I get in???  Freaking Microsoft.  I tell ya.  If it is not one thing its another.

    Any ideas?

    I have a sneaking suspicion that this mad be an unfortunate side-effect of removing KB885250 from the client PC. Is anyone else experiencing similar difficulty?

    NOTE:  You may want to take a System Restore snapshot prior to removing this update.  I didnt and Ive yet to see any repurcussions (sp?), but MS usually puts critical updates out there for a reason.

    "Repercussions," just for the record. ;)

  15. Can anyone confirm my solution posted earlier?

    Might have been a good idea to post a link or a brief description. ;) I had to read back to find out what your solution was. I'm not experiencing this trouble myself, so unfortunately I can't confirm or deny.

    Here's the post, for those who are able to confirm/deny:

    ...I simlpy went to the root of my HD in my computer (C:\) . Then I selected all the FOLDERS (not files) and right clicked and went properties, then clicked on the sharing and security tab. A Pop warning comes up about RESETTING all the permissions again and i clicked yes...

  17. I honestly figured this to be a problem with the pc's accessing the files, not the host, but assuming RumaNoV's results actually fixed the problem and not simply coincedental, then perhaps the issue resides in the host pc after all.

    That was the impression I got too, since I seem to recall someone saying that the files showed up properly from one of the machines that they had set up on their network. I could be mistaken though, and I've already sifted through this entire thread several times so I don't feel like doing it again.

    Im going to try to get around to reformatting my host pc within the next couple days with an un-modified windows install cd... which is not what was used to install the version thats on it now.  ill post back results as soon as I do.
    Please do. I am really curious to know if that is an actual solution or just a coincidence.
    btw.. a big thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread.  i thought i was the only one having this issue and figured i wouldnt recieve much assistance as its such a completely random and strange problem.  you guys rock for sifting through 7 pages of ranting to try to help figure out someone elses problem.

    Help you? Man, I just do it for the post count. :P
