    Well, I think that was bourne out by my original issue - Windows sees the partitions and their properties but can't read the file system therein. It can't even assign a drive label. Anyway, I did look at that open source project earlier. It looks like it's in continual development and not a full release and as I'm paranoid about losing my data I think I'm just going to put the drives back into the original NAS unit which I still have fortunately. Why isn't life ever simple?!?

    Just read some negative reviews on that software so scrapped that idea. If I can't be confident in the driver then I'll stick the drives back in the old NAS and do it that way. Thanks for your assistance. James

    Think I may have found the solution to this one. It turns out Synology use EXT4 file system hence the problem with reading the drives. I'm going to install Paragon ExtFS for Windows. Will post back my results.

    Only options available for that disk is "Delete Volume" and "Convert to Dynamic Disk".

    Apologies if this is in the wrong section but it seemed as good as any. Ok, so I've just upgraded my NAS unit and disks. All seemed good until I discovered that some folders had mysteriously disappeared. No fear, I thought, as I still have the 2 drives I swapped out with the original folders still on them. I plug one in to my rig and the BIOS happily acknowledges it's existence. Windows 10 however seems less sure of itself. Disk Management shows it with all it's partitions, volumes, etc, but the drive just isn't explorable. The unit was a Synology DS212J and the drives are WD20EARX. So, is this a Windows 10 issue, some kind of proprietary software that Synology used when in the unit or something else I've overlooked? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers James

    Thanks for your suggestion. It doesn't have the assigned hotkey you mentioned but I am starting to think that the keyboard itself is at fault.

    This has become a real annoyance to me and I'm now desperate for ideas and possible solutions. As I type on my keyboard the Windows 7 calculator program opens spontaneously. However, I can never replicate the issue. I've never used hotkeys and according to my online research there is no Windows Shortcut assigned to the calculator so I can't be opening it by accident via a shortcut. I've just installed a piece of keylogging software but that hasn't helped as it just shows me what I've just typed not the exact keystroke. It's happened twice whilst writing this and happens frequently regardless of the software being used. If keyboard use is required then it will happen. Can anyone shed any light on this?     Thanks to you all for the advice and especially the comprehensive post by jaclaz in language I understand! I've gone ahead and ordered Cat5e cable and will leave the router/hub close to the telephone socket. The potential support issues that could occur were good enough reasons for me. Cheers James

    Just had the ISP (in UK) install a telephone socket so that we can enjoy broadband in the home and realised after the work had been done that the socket is one room away from where the main desktop PC is situated. I realise now that I'll have to install cable between them but want to know which option below is more preferable in terms of maintaining a reliable connection: Leave router close to telephone socket with short RJ11 cable length and extend the LAN using RJ45 network cable to the desktop PC Move router close to desktop PC and install one continuous RJ11 cable from telephone socket to the router and use a standard 1m RJ45 network cable from there to the destop PCSorry, I'm not too hot on the industry cabling standards - I'm sure you'll know what I mean by RJ11/RJ45 cables. Appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks James

    Have been following the guide at the link below and have got to the stage where I need to mount the Windows 7 image and move the WinRE image and the boot.sdi file to the \Windows\System32 directory. WinRE Deployment Guide However, although the WinRE image file copies across first time the boot.sdi file generates an access denied error: Destination Folder Access Denied. "You need permission to perform this action" When I delved deeper into the mounted Windows folder I discovered 8 versions of the same file in various subfolders. So, my 2 questions are: 1) Why can't I access this folder for one of the 2 files? 2) Why are there so many versions of the same file? I should add that this is a x64 project so is it possible that the boot.sdi file version cited in the guide (\Windows\Boot\DVD\PCAT) is the wrong one? Should I be using one of the other 7? James

    Thanks for the follow up. I've actually succeeded in installing IE9 as an individual app so I can rule that one out. By a process of elimination I believe that MS Security Essentials is causing the VM to crash. I've used various combinations of switches to make it a silent install but when I install it 'normally' with full UI I notice that there are several windows that require UI before it can continue. In my mind that effectively means the command line parameters they document as working just don't. This is the guide I've been using: My link Has anyone succeeded with MSE?

    Hi Kel As I stated above I did use your suggestion to no avail. I'm starting to wonder if I'm putting in the wrong place. I didn't want to have to add that command to every individual app command page so I put it in the "Execute after" entry on the Options/Tools tab. Is that the wrong place? James

    I've noticed others also having issues with using this script but when inserted into a bat file and run it worked fine. I have no experience with writing bat files but if someone could give me some pointers on what and where to save it I'm sure I could resolve this.

    Ok, tried the following scripts: DEL "%PUBLIC%\DESKTOP\*.lnk" DEL "%SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop\*.lnk" del /s/q "%allusersprofile%\Desktop\*.lnk" and it fails every time with the returned code: (returned code 999) Any ideas?

    After reading several threads and posts I need some clarification on the following: I want to use a script that will tell WPI to execute after it installs all my apps that will remove all the desktop shortcuts. The general thought is to use - del /s/q "%allusersprofile%\Desktop\*.lnk" However, research on the web says that the variable %allusersprofile% has changed in Windows 7 to %programdata%. Can anyone confirm this and if so does the rest of the script change in any way? James

    First of all, like many others I'm sure, I'm sorry to hear that your PC has given up the ghost - everyone's worst nightmare! Secondly, the internet sadly does breed a culture of getting something for nothing which if you're dealing with a multi-corporation with an ad based revenue stream is understandable. However, it's not rocket science to realise that there are people out there, genuine coders and app creators like yourself, that are doing it for nothing more than the hope that it will be used and appreciated. Troy, I think you've probably gone on longer than most would without the support you clearly need at the moment. I had already decided to make a donation before reading your thread simply because I think WPI is such a great tool. After reading the thread it really made me think about the expenses you're incurring that I'm indirectly benefiting from and made me glad that I did donate. In real world terms those few donations may cover some of your telephone or electricity bills, repair costs or towards replacing new parts. If only we could remember this when using third party software that is being developed by one person sat in his home office working on an ageing PC that is ready to fail at any moment. This is not a sympathy drive people - this is REAL LIFE! Thanks for the many hours you've put into this project Troy and hope that at the very least you'll be able to answer our WPI queries when we need help. Regards James

    I have an application that insists on launching after WPI installs it silently. Found command line example for Skype and tried to adapt it but it doesn't work. Skype example: msiexec /i SkypeSetup.msi STARTSKYPE=FALSE /qf My command line: "%wpipath%\Install\x86 Downloads\Radio_Downloader-win32.msi" STARTRADIODOWNLOADER=FALSE /qn Any ideas? James

    Have updated the install file and config user file with some additional applications. Got the same errors with the same apps and also the final VM crash. Managed to get a screen grab and have included that in the zipped file. Archive attached. James WPI Files.7z
