  1. Is there any way to know that the directX files installed are the Oct or Dec updated ones as the version always reads 9.0c
  2. No way to do this at all? I did find a way to edit the regsitry entry of lnkfile and add a string tileinfo and leave it blank and then display the desktop icons in tile mode arranged by name. But exe's and zips still have the extra infomation of tile mode which i need to get rid of (just for cosmetic purposes)
  3. I think that the desktop icons in tile mode look quite chic. I would like to know whether there is a reg tweak/hack that i can learn - right now i use a program called Dcolor which sits in the system tray from startup (and eats 6 MB RAM). More importantly i would love to know what reg entry to create/modify to get rid of the additional info that accompanies the tiles apart from the file name such as kind of file, file size or the description in case of an exe file - this info is usually greyed out and is diffeent for diffferent types of files. any way to supress / hide this additional data?? I know winfx does so but i don't want to buy a program only for this beautification tweak Any help on these issues??
  4. Is there a tool that can help me to change the background graphic while winXp (slipstreamed or otherwise) does a fresh install - get gored looking at the present blue graphic for close to 23 minutes
  5. I have installed the trial version of a program to try out. This has been installed on a stanbdalone computer for safety reasons. I have administrative rights (their are several other users with limited rights). I want another user (with limited user rights) to use this program. The program is in his program list but when accessed it gives an error about missing MDAC 2.1 etc which is not possibly because this set of files is definitely there in the common files folder. Further this program works perfectly when i log in to my account with administratiove rights. What i did next was give that user admin rights temporarily and he was able to access the program without any error messages. But i cannot give this person admin rights without compromising the security of this standalone PC. How can i solve this problem - i.e. give him limited user rights which he is entitled to as well as permit him to use the program withour error messages? Essentially he is gettinmg sccess to the programs but not to the MDAC librray files required to run this program WinXP SP2, NTFS PS - Is there any program i can buy that simplifies the work of an administrator rather than the administrative tools in control panel regarding security policies, permissions etc?? Thank you
  6. If i have a single user only (myself) in oobeinfo.ini as identity 000 can i do away the following lines in the winnt.sif answer file? auto admin logon line = Yes/No and no of times autologon is allowed by the machine = ?
  7. I know this is what must be placed in the oobeinfo.ini file which will be placed in the appropriate subfolder within $OEM$ for winXP unintended install [userInfo] Identity000="Newuser-Admin" Identity001="Newuser-User" The two questions i have are Question one Does the "Newuser-Admin" have to be substituted with an actual name such as "Joel Garner" or "Joel Garner-Admin" or leave it exactly like shown under userinfo ? Question two What should i do if i am the only user of this computer - cut the second line and use the first line only subject to what you answer to question one?
  8. Thanks for all the help - OI think I'll wait for someone to doublecheck the above facts and then geta move on

  10. I have five queries before i build my first unattended install CD 1) What would be the result if both the follwoing lines were there in the winnt.sif file autopartition=1 file system=* (sound conflicting as i understand it) 2) Is the line Repartition=No the same as not being there at all in this file 3) If I have a Fat32 file system and wish to format the same and leave the file system intact what should be the line i should add and where for unattended install action? 4) If i already have an NTFS file system and wish to format the same and leave the file system intact what should be the line i should add and where for iuninstall action? Will filesystem=convertNTFS achieve the format and retention of NTFS if the partition is already is NTFS (or istfor existing Fat32 formatted partitions?) 5) Is there any valid line such as filesystem=leavealone or such and wiull this achieve a format in order for me to do a clean install Thanks to those who would spend some time with this newbie
  11. I have beeen wondering how the unattended installation chooses the drive / partition to install to? The only option we have is Autopartition = 1 or 0 I have the following on my PC HDD 1 Partitions C, E and F HDD 2 Partitions D and E My questions Situation 1 If all are formatted clean where willXP be installed Situation 2 If G contains W2K where will Xp be instralled assuming i am installing XP after W2K Now my laptop One HDD C and D drives D would conatin my files moved here for safety where will XP autoinstall? And no i don't undertant a S**t about MBRs and how and why they are overwritten I'd appreciate any help on this issue
  12. I have understood most of the process of sreating a .sif file for unattended installation of winXP and how and why to place it in the i386 folder etc. Since i have two HDDs with a total of 5 partitions i wish to specify that windowsXP be installed to the C drive and C drive alone rather than let windows decide the default drive of inmstall. How do i do this? In other words i do not want to wait to choose the drive to install to during the setup process Possible Yes, i have read most of the info on this but have not come across an example of the above requested Could someone help - I am a relative newbie in all this... Thanks
