I rolled back my Win98SE/IE5.01 and Win98SE/IE5.01SP2 VMs to a pre-patched state and re-patched them from scratch. Both ended up failing on Security Update August 9, 2000: This update resolves the "Scriptlet Rendering" and "Frame Domain Verification" security vulnerabilities. in Internet Explorer.

Presumably a missing file? https://web.archive.org/web/20050207052024/http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/patch11/default.asp  has four q269368.exe files. Are they any use to you?

The file exists, and is downloaded, however when you try to run it manually it says it's not required, causing WU to say it wasn't installed. Based on its file version I suspect it's for IE 5.5 and not 5.01, however installing IE 5.5 SP0 gives the same message (and causes WU Restored to no longer work) and I'm unable to install IE 5.5 SP2 to test it.

Have you ever run Windows Update V4 on this computer ?

It was a VM that had WinME preinstalled so I can't say for sure what if anything may have been done to it.

I did however reinstall WinME from scratch and got a different result, this time with a 404. This is using IE 5.5 and not 6.0.

  3. I don't know if custom themes are still a supported use case scenario, however when porting an old Windows 7 theme I made to the latest version of SAB I ran into two issues that I can't seem to figure out.

    1) The programs list seems to double-render under the program's label. For example in the screenshot below I used the included Windows 7 theme and modified the StartPanelComposited::StartPanelPriv, Part# 6, State# 0 with a solid color #3C000000. As you can see the the individual list items are black as a result.

    2) The second issue is, SAB seems to no longer take into account the DEFAULTPANESIZE:RECT value in StartPanelPriv, Parts# 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 22

The older StartIsBack used to work fine in this regard (see: https://www.deviantart.com/longhornfusion/art/M7-with-new-Start-Menu-380790291 (although this is from 10 years ago))

Is there anyway to work around these?

  4. When customizing the start menu from the msstyles, does SIB check for any property or class to determine whether or not to show it?

I don't theme too much so only today did I realize that modifying an 8.1 theme didn't update the start menu so I checked this thread and saw it requires an unmodified 8.0 theme.

  5. EDIT: I got ResourceSpy to work without even running the EXE. I put AveResourceReplacer.dll in Appinit_DLLs and it works! Now, if only this tool was actually free and you didn't have a WSB license to download it normally.

    That's not really safe.

  6. So much for that theory. I saw it happen outside a sandbox today (and other sandboxed apps didn't replicate that behavior) so it has to be something about the way the windows are being created.

    I took a cap at 3x mag:

I guess the reason the caption title was made into Metro style DirectWrite is because it's maybe the only part of the interface the developer usually doesn't get involved in. Somewhere down the road maybe they are hoping to bring desktop apps into Metro.

Ribbon applications have a custom drawn frame for the QAT, contextual tab headers, and relocating title to render on to it. The title text is also custom drawn and it still works as it did in Vista/7 in that the text can have a transparent background and text glow applied to it. Normal windows however have an opaque background applied to it which is controlled by DWM's colorization color. This is why you're seeing Paint have a proper title and other applications aren't.

  7. What's the status of navigation buttons on glass in Win8? Please write me, skinners and send a sample of skin with buttons / navigation bar on glass which should work if Explorer supported that.

How exactly do you mean? The navigation button hasn't changed in 8 except for their location being moved back into the msstyles. All that's required is having DWM extend to the height of the navbar. (And replacing the white image of the navbar with a transparent one)

  8. @Tihiy I was wrong, the blank screen issue is still there, moving IE temp folder (log out) removes the lockscreen image +3 sec black screen -> slow login screen, then uninstalling SIB+ 1.5 results in a blank screen, F8 safe mode option "bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy" also blank screen, both laptops (2 liscences) running Nvidia cards (Kepler GTX 680M/780M) 120Hz screens. SIB+ installed (moved IE temp folder -> no lockscreen) restoring windows default theme and uninstalling uxstyle -> blank screen.

Uxstyle installed (No SIB+) moving IE temp folder -> normal boot.

    - Moving IE temp folder -> log out.

    - SIB+ Uxstyle conflict.

    - SIB+/Nvidia drivers.

Nvidia fixed the blank screen bug /3D Vision laptops with driver v326.01 no problems ever since, current v331.93.

UxStyle v0.2.3.0 theme installed (Stealth) http://nighthawk-f22.deviantart.com/art/Windows-8-1-RTM-Dark-Aero-409206911

    Thanks.

You might want to check HKU\DEFAULT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager DllName is set to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Aero\Aero.msstyles. This key isn't always updated properly and can cause the black screen on boot after uninstalling a uxtheme patch.

  9. Yes it is in the msstyles, you need to open the msstyles with Restorator and add the bitmap images after you save it with WSB, if you save it again in WSB the bitmaps are removed again, the bitmap images are named as they are in explorer.exe, would be better if the userframes could be added to the msstyles part Vista Legacy > Start Menu > Basic > UserPicture and use that instead.

I was going to suggest that it used Vista Beta's frame that still exists in that location if it didn't. Otherwise I could modify WSB to not remove the frame on save. Alternatively look for an image in: Start Menu > Panels > Basic > Places List > Panels > User Pane which would be the equivalent location to that old Vista property.

Also, is there a way to purchase SIB+ as a gift for someone else?

  10. 8.1 x64 Pro here. Tried RC2 and RC1. Neither work. I donated a moment ago but that's irrelevant.

Installed Debugging Tools and got my symbols. Copied them into the directory of course.

    Debug.log says:

    [2013-12-14 15:16:32][Thread 0xB48] Hook (USER32.dll!CreateWindowExW from shell32.dll) installed[2013-12-14 15:16:32][Thread 0xB48] Hook (USER32.dll!SetWindowCompositionAttribute from explorer.exe) installed[2013-12-14 15:16:32][Thread 0xB48] Hook (dwmapi.dll!DwmEnableBlurBehindWindow from explorer.exe) installed[2013-12-14 15:16:32][Thread 0xB48] Hook (USER32.dll!LoadImageW from themecpl.dll) installed

aerohost.exe is running but there's no command dialog or watermark.

I'm curious about this too, another person I know had the same issue, but just for RC1. Downloaded the symbols, changed the right registry keys, even sent me a few screenshots showing what all he had done, but nothing, no dialog, watermark, or anything.

  11. Nice update, You must be joking, more like a nice downgrade. :puke:

    No bypass theme signature

    No taskbar blur

    No custom swatches

fixed small blur glitch and removed taskbar blur.

Taskbar blurring still works with SIB. You can still use UxStyle for signature bypassing, and I don't know about you but custom swatches never worked for me and only removed the ones that were already there causing the control panel to be empty.

So we need SIB & UxStyle & aerohost.exe & dwm console open & watermark NOW, just to get DWMGlass.dll to work same as before. :o

    No Thanks :thumbdown

Ok, then don't use it :)

  13. There is NO classic desktop left in windows 8. It is one of the first things that was removed.

No remnants, no files. NOTHING left of it. You cannot reg hack something that is NOT there.

That's actually not true, both Aero Basic and Windows Classic still exist, it's just not easy to apply it anymore because there's no up front way to do it. They exist purely as a fallback but they're there.

  14. Hancoque: there will be a setting for it

PandaX: it's Windows limitation, because space character serves as separator there

NoelC: if DWM restarted due to some internal error, it should be trackable in system log (eventvwr > Application log)

Yeah I figured it was Windows' fault. Wasn't aware about the space being a separator though.

Also finally got around to donating. :)

  15. PandaX, I have a vague memory that the folder name where the dll and other attendant files live needs to be a short name. I hope I'm not crossing two things up. I use C:\BIN myself, as I already had the folder on my system.

What registry settings did you use, specifically?

    -Noel

    AppInit_DLLs = X:\My Programs\Customization\DWM\DWMGlass.dll

Though I can't seem to convert it to short path because GetShortPathName is always returning X:\My Programs\Customization\DWM\DWMGlass.dll
