  1. Yes, it is. It was custom built around 2002. P4 1.6G, 512ram, Platinix Mobo, Nvidia Geforce FX 5700, Sound Blaster 5.1 I checked that and it was set to full. I experimented lowering the settings (including disabling them entirely) but it didn't make a difference. Like I said before removing the latest version of Avast definitely helped but it's still not right. I'm thinking it might be a problem with a graphics card.
  2. Yes, I did. That was one of the first things I installed (along with the sound and chipset drivers) before I got into the updates. I just removed Avast and it seems to be smoother now. At first I thought it was due to some prolonged AV update making it laggy but the definitions and software updates were done a while back. An hour into surfing around and the little icon was still spinning. I've used Avast before but it's never caused lag like that. I'm not sure if that's the main cause but it's all trial and error when you don't know much about these things. Are there any settings on the video card that might cause this?
  3. I recently did a fresh install of 2000 but have noticed that whenever I watch a video it "lags". I tried a few static clips on You Tube and even the sound is not quite right (but not nearly as bad as the visuals). This is the first time I've done a proper test run with this machine, having installed everything from windows update, the UURollup and a few essentials (avast 7, firefox 12, flash player 11.1.202.55). Even some old games I tried seem laggy. Is this a video card issue or something to do with the new updates?
  4. I had a problem when I installed Avast 7. It seemed to install okay but then said it had encountered errors with windows and made a log of it. Anyway, I rebooted and it seems to be working fine. I can't find the log though. Do you have any idea where it's located? Is this a common problem or did this happen because I haven't installed the KB950305-KB977225 and bristols files yet?
  5. You were right tomasz, the WU worked perfectly. I had a look at your UURollup thread and there's an update section at the bottom which lists Windows2000-UU-HBR-KB950305-KB977225-x86-ENU. What type of add on is that? Also, I had a look at the Last Versions thread but noticed the last update was in 2009. I'd like to get the latest 2K compatible versions of Adobe Flash Player, Opera, Firefox, Avast, Msn etc but it doesn't list the version numbers. I know some of them are listed under "ongoing" but I don't know if I need any unofficial add ons to make them work or if they'll work with the current official updates I have now.
  6. It looks like I missed a few posts here. Okay. Thank you for the clarification tomasz. I'll be sure to give that a go if the WU doesn't work. Re: OnePiece and tomasz rollups, yes I know they are different. Sorry if my posts were confusing or misleading. I appreciate the help. Yes, that pretty much sums it up. I just get easily confused (or confuse others) when it comes to these things.
  7. No, I'm not 100% sure I did it right (novice here). That's why I said it may have been caused by a "user error" / me screwing up. The WU site says: "Get the latest Windows Update software. We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the software and begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now". Is this "update software" compatible with 2000?
  8. This is confusing. MS 2000 SP4 says: Date published: 2/26/2009 and the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 says: Date published: 9/13/2005. So, the MS RollUp for SP4 is dated 4 years prior to the release of SP4?! I was hoping the release date would make it easier selecting the files I needed from the site you mentioned but no such luck. I went through the OnePiece patch thread and found the following on page six: Would I be able to still use his patch or would it corrupt my system since I already have MS SP4 RollUp installed?
  9. Is there a certain way you have to install older (pre-XP) games on 2000? I ask because I installed a few games (that worked fine on 98se) but despite installing properly, the screen goes black and the system locks up (until I end the program in task manager) whenever I try them (this is just single player, not online). I've just done a fresh install of 2000 and added SP4 and the MS post-SP4 RollUp. Is there anything missing that I need to get them to work?
  10. Update: I tried what Tomasz suggested but whether it was down to user error or something else, it wouldn't install properly. I ended up formatting the drive and installed 2000 without any unofficial patches, which worked. Then I finally got the internet working and installed SP4 and the MS RollUp from the MS site. I assume since MS stopped support for 2000 2 years ago Windows Update is no longer an option. I got directed to an update page that prompted me to install a "new" updater / installer. I wasn't sure if that would work for 2000, so I left it. Does "Onepiece's Windows 2000 postSP4 Update Pack" contain any updates that would conflict the official MS post SP4 RollUp? Should the order of installation be: SP4, MS RollUp and Onepiece's Pack OR SP4 and then install Onepiece's pack? I plan on installing Tomasz' unofficial UURollUp patch last. I just want to get the system updated with the "official" fixes first.
  11. I don't know if I did this right but I went through the list of PCI devices under ENUM\PCI and only found one "unknown" device. I wrote down what I thought was the ID / hex code: ven_1813&dev_4100&subsys_8a0016ef&rev_01. However, the codes on the site you listed are all shorter, so I'm not 100% sure but I think I found it here. The thing is if it's for the ham modem I've already installed the drivers for that from the installation cd. Case in point, when I click on "ham modem" under device manager it says the device is working properly. Can someone confirm if I've got the correct "code" and done this right? Edit: It doesn't look like they provide any drivers on that site. Any idea where I can get them?
  12. Sorry, perhaps that was a poor choice of wording. Every time I installed a driver and went to device manager it said "no drivers installed". I tried searching for the drivers (again in device manager) but it said "no drivers found". I reinstalled the modem software to see if it would "find" them that way but still no joy. I haven't tried booting in safe mode, so I'll see if that makes a difference (God knows, everything else I've tried has been met with utter failure). As for the anti-virus / anti-spyware question, I don't think they block anything. I made sure everything was disabled beforehand. Besides, I haven't reinstalled the AV / AS software since I formatted and I'm still in the same boat, so I think that rules out any problems there.
  13. Thanks for the quick response! Okay, so let me see if I've got this in the right order. 1) Download MS SP4 and MS Update Rollup 1 from MS. 2) Then get Onepiece's Windows 2000 postSP4 Update Pack which contain the most of the updates after SP4. 3) Get the remaining official MS updates from the HTSLIP site. 4) Finally, get your RollUp containing the unofficial stuff. I'm not that tech savvy, so this slipstream process sounds tricky. Can I just download and burn everything to a cd and install them that way? One other question, I have a laptop with 2000 and SP4, can I just export everything from the laptop to the PC via something like Nortons Ghost? N.B. I was having a senior moment before when I said I've never used 2000. I have it on a laptop that was given to me, but not the cd (which I'm in the process of getting) and have hardly used it.
  14. Yes, I did Thanks for all the links and information. Unfortunately, the drivers weren't compatible. I also installed the NUSB but that didn't make a difference either. Since this works perfectly on my 2000 laptop I was thinking of installing 2000 on the PC and see if that works. I'm really stumped as to what could be causing this. Would it work if I copied the installed files from the 2000 laptop and added them to my 98se PC?
  15. Does anyone happen to know what site Tomw is referring to? Also, could someone tell me the directory path in the registry where the PCI Network Controllers are located?
  16. I was thinking of installing 2000 on another machine but I haven't used 2000 before and I can't connect to the net with it to download the windows updates (if they're even still available). What I need is an autopatcher of sorts that includes SP4, that I can burn to a disk and install after I've installed the main OS. Does such a patch exist? I have one for 98se but I couldn't find anything for 2000.
  17. Sorry, I forgot to mention that it was a Speedtouch. It's identical to the first one, so it's the stingray version. It was part of the package from my ISP and comes with an installation cd with the Alcatel drivers included, in addition to all the filters etc. . A little additional background information might help here (in hindsight I should have included this in my original post). I've been using the modem for the last 8 years or so. It came with the internet package my ISP / Phone company provided, along with the installation cd (and drivers). It's served me well over the years on my back up system and then decided to not work one day. No errors, the whole pc just froze / locked up whenever I tried clicked on the connect button. At first I thought it was an ISP problem because they had done some upgrades on the line but it works fine on my old laptop (that has 2000 on it). I also called to verify if there were any problems with older hardware and they said it should be fine. Considering the laptop and pc are both old with usb 1.1 slots, using old (albeit different) operating systems, I'm mystified as to why one works, yet the other doesn't. All I did was install the software of the laptop and plug in the usb cable. I didn't change the cable set up, so I know the hardware works and all the cables are connected properly. Anyway, I decided to format the pc (just in case it was some weird virus messing with the system) with a fresh installation of W98se but when I installed the software half the content is missing (including the drivers). So where-as before it installed everything but froze when attempting to use it, now it's not even installing all the contents. The way the installation works is you let the cd install the first lot of software, then plug in the usb cable when prompted, the system asks for the W98se cd, then installs the drivers. The same for the 2000 machine, except it didn't ask for the OS cd. N.B. The ISP installation program states that it will ask for the OS cd it you're using 98se. Each time I get a no-so-successful "installation complete!", it looks like the modem is connected (two green lights showing) but obviously something is going wrong somewhere.
  18. I don't think device manager gives me the option to disable it. If I knew exactly what "it" is I'd try and find the drivers and install them and / or see if I could remove the hardware from my system. That's the main problem here. How do you find out what you need when the system gives you such limited information? Is there some kind of diagnostic tool I can use to see what "it" is?
  19. What I mean is I click on the Alcatel icon, the connect window pops up, I click the "connect" box, a little "connecting" bar loads halfway on the pop up window...and then my whole system freezes. The cursor freezes, I can't ctrl alt dlt, the keyboard (which isn't usb) is completely unresponsive. The only option I have is to hit the reboot button on the actual tower. It's weird because everything else on my system works perfectly until I do that. In this situation would the program you suggested help? I've tried reinstalling the software, removing old reg keys, running antivirus, antispyware etc but nothing fixes the problem. It was working up until recently when my isp / phone provider made some changes. They said it shouldn't affect me and that the old modem should still work (it works just dandy on my old win 2000 laptop).
  20. I have PCI Network Controller listed under "reserved device" in the device manager that is causing a resource conflict (code 15). The system can't find any drivers for it and it just reinstalls if I try to remove it and reboot. Windows troubleshooter suggests it's a plug n play device because it has a "manual configuration" option. Is plug n play the same as hardware that requires usb access? If so, I only have one usb port being used (a dsl modem) and that says it's working fine. There's nothing showing in the conflicted device list on the resource tab, so I have no idea what the conflict is. The only thing I have to go on is the manufacturer is Intel. I haven't added any new hardware to this machine. Any ideas how this can be fixed?
  21. I've never done this before but may have to on my old 98se pc. I know there are lots of guides out there but they all seem like chinese to me. Would someone be prepared to provide me with some simple instructions. Just what discs I need, what I install (in what order) and how to start the process. That would be ideal. I have the mobo chipset, os, vid and sound card disks and boot disk (unofficial).
  22. I have an old usb alcatel dsl modem that isn't working. The screen freezes when I try to connect to the internet, so I tried a fresh install but it's still doing the same thing. No error messages, just freezes. The actual hardware seems fine and says it's connected. I've uninstalled the software, removed any remaining files and folders and also run a registry cleaner to find and remove the reg keys but still no joy. Is there anything else I need to do to completely remove the software from the system before I try again? I used ccleaner, free reg cleaner and regclean so far. Is there anything else that would be hidden in the system that I need to remove that's causing a conflict? I've also ran antivirus and antispyware but they didn't pick up anything.
  23. Hi everyone, Complete computer novice here in need of some help. I'm trying to back up data from an old win 98se pc but when I use a 2.0 usb flash drive it has a fit half way through installing the drivers and I get the following blue screen error: "Invalid vxd dynamic link call from ntmaphlp (02) + 00000002 to device "004f", service 1. Your windows configuration is invalid, Run the windows setup program again to correct this problem. To continue running windows press y or enter. To quit the current program press n. If you continue running windows your system may become unstable". It gives me a black screen regardless of what option I choose but runs fine after I remove the drive and reboot. The pc was custom built in 2002. Unfortunately, the shop that built it went out of business years ago, so I have no idea if it has 1.0 or 1.1 usb ports. I was told 2.0 flash drives are backwards compatible, so it should work with old comps with 1.1 usb ports. It works fine with an old laptop running 2000. It was suggested the pc might just have usb 1.0 port which is why it isn't working. Is there a way to find out what version (1.0 or 1.1) it has? Also, what would I need to do to upgrade to 1.1 if it turns out it has 1.0? I read somewhere that win 98se comes with drivers for 1.1 as default. I'm hoping one of you tech guru's can help me out here as I'm stumped. Is USB 2.0 hardware backwards compatible with just 1.1 or 1.0 as well? Also, would hardware with 1.0 or 1.1 connectors work if I added 2.0 ports? Really appreciate any / all help! Flash drive make / model: Sandisk Cruzer 3 2.0 Motherboard: Legend QUI Planitix 2
