  1. so are you saying when downloading i should be able to get about 57kbps max  on my 460kbps connec
for gprs, at 460kbps, you should be getting 57KB/s

note that kilobits per second (kbps) does not equal kilobytes (KB/s). Take kilobits and divide by 8 and you'll get kilobytes.

kbps <> KB/s :: The reason I bring that up is when you look at a download progress bar, they show the speed in KB/s which is not kbps. This way you have a more accurate representation.

if you use the 80% rule, that equates to 46KB/s on a 460kbps connection. So they might be limiting http or ftp traffic

  2. it's nearly impossible to get 56kbps while surfing. 56kbps = 7KB/s, so you should see throughput at less than 7KB/s on your dial-up connection.

for gprs, at 460kbps, you should be getting 57KB/s, so it's possible they're limiting your download speed

  3. i'm sure other readers with more experience in this situation will chime in, but the only way I can think of is to alter each user's hosts file and put the hostname and IP in so it resolves. I assume your workstations are on MS Windows since you are posting your question on this website

  4. thanks, but none of those worked, remember am not using nor do i need a wireless router. only the 2 laptops and the usb connection to my cell phone.

does that usb mobile phone connection show up in your network connections? If it does, and you go to properties, do you have a sharing tab?

If the sharing tab doesn't exist, you can't share that internet connection. period.

  5. honestly, unless you're running a 5 year old PC, a hardware nic will not really help you out. There's not just enough going on that today's processors will take a major performance hit by the network stack. Yeah, you might see a 1-3 fps increase, but it's probably not worth it.

That said, i'd answer what nitro asked and then we'll see for sure
