I have a P3 with an Intel e1000 with both Windows 3.11 and Windows 98 installed. I’d like to be able switch between both versions without rebooting the machine. I’d also like network support for both operating systems. IO.SYS has been patched to allow 3.11 to run. The problem is that each OS needs their specific version of IFSHLP.SYS. I’ve tried loading both of them at the same time, but the one that’s loaded last takes precedence. Using Windows 98‘s version and disabling 32-bit disk access in 3.11 will allow it to start, but the networking subsystem fails to initialize. Does anyone have any ideas? Could there be some clever hack that would allow me to work around the IFSHLP.SYS conflict?

USB keyboard still works without any problems. There must be some kind of glitch that is disrupting USB BIOS legacy mouse support. If I use halapic w/ ntkernmp, the mouse works fine, but any network access quickly hardlocks the system. Does halapic.dll even support multiprocessor configuration or is it only supposed to be used with SP kernel? Default HAL is fine, but alas no multiprocessor support. MPS version 1.1 is set in the BIOS. Is it possible to change the Program Files directory for NT4 before the actual install? Utilities such a nLite let me change the Program Files directory name for Windows 2K/XP, but I can't find a utility that does that with NT4. Is there a way to do in manually, perhaps?

I'd like to build a system where NT3.51 can coexist peacefully with higher NT versions. Is it possible to stop Windows 2K/XP (and VISTA?) from upgrading a mounted NTFS volume from version 1.1 to 3.0? A registry hack or a patch, perhaps? Any ideas? I don't want to have to use FAT for NT3.51 as I'm limited to just 2GB (or 4GB if I use that unholy FAT cluster size), nor do I want to deal with partition hiding.

When I use nlite to make a custom XP install, I change the profiles directory from "\Documents and Settings" to "D:\" (a separate partition to reduce fragmentation). I can't find any option in vlite to to the same with \Users. I've googled about moving user profiles on an existing vista installation, but they're complicated and require many changes to the registry. It seems like it would be a lot easier to change the user profiles before the install, but I don't know how to do this.
