  1. Hi Green Machine, I just wated to annouce another small bug: When my CD burner was not ready (not closed, not the right blank CD, etc.), XPCREATE would quit with an error and delete the ISO file. I now typically don't enter my CD drive into the XPCREATE.ini and instead burn the resulting ISO separately.
  2. Just a quick update: I did have success, and the only problem was indeed the js56nen.exe file, which I manually needed to install again after everything else to have working Java Script support (i.e., Windows Update etc.). Note that for me, replacing js56nen.exe with js51nen.exe did not at all imrpove things, both led to non-working JS, so obviously, I stuck with the newer version. In total I saved a whole lot of time since all other hotfixes were installed together with Windows 2000. When I hit "Windows Update" at the end, all that was missing (as of today, October 22nd, 2004) were the 6 new security updates from the past 10 days, and probably one less if I hadn't installed the Journal Viewer to begin with. For those interested, here's my directive file again with comments. 3. I might have forgotten to use the js51nen.exe file instead... I am trying this now, if it works, I'll let you all know.
  4. Here is my experience report: - I started with a non-bootable (probably intended for update from W95 ony) academic Windows 2000 Professional CD. To make my updated compilation bootable I downloaded boot.bin off the web. - I based my downloads on Bilou's September 28, 2004 posted XPCTHLST.TXT file, with the following modifications: 1.) Replace the DX9.0c with DX9.0b entry as suggested by Bilou, and set 3 lines to ADD/DELETE as indicated for Windows 2000 Professional. I'll attach the exact file. Solved Problems: - Downloading: Downloading was difficult since XPCREATE only wanted to accept the XPCTHLST.TXT file from a URL, so in the end I uploaded it to my own server and had XPCREATE look for it there. This worked eventually... i.e. you could set DURL=http://www.myserver.com and XPCREATE, if you have my exact version, then looks for http://www.myserver.com/2KP/ENU/XPCTHLST.TXT - One of Bilou's DX9.0b updates apparently has an incorrect MD5, I think it is in the follwowing line; Since the MD5 was wrong, the file would get deleted by the downloader, XPCREATE would then not find it and stop execution. My solution was to manually download this file into its folder and write-protect it. The bad MD5 is in this line: ADD SVC-HF1\DirectX90-KB839643-x86-ENU.EXE http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/8...643-x86-ENU.EXE ef1e26cfea92434cbedcb61123dd785b - Two hotfixes that start with IE6.0SP....exe were given the same 8.3 filename, which caused XPCREATE to halt execution. I gave the downloaded source files different 8.3 filenames and restarted XPCREATE, this time without error. However, I am not sure if they are still installed in the right order. Does anyone know if the initial names matter? - The resulting Windows 2000 Professional install, which was by far the easiest in years, contained DirectX 9.0b and IExplorer 6.0.2800.1106 allright, but script execution was messed up, as neither the Windows Update nor the ATI Catalyst driver installation would work. The workaround seems to be to install IE6SP1 again after the install, this time from the web. After that, I could not see any defects in my install, and Windows Update and Catalyst Drivers behaved normally. An earlier experiment: I also searched the Microsoft website for the latest Windows 2000 "security update" hotfixes only, which are about 6 or so since September 28th, 2004. All of these seemed to be Type 1, so I placed them into the HF1 subfolder and started XPCREATE. Back then I simply hit "Y" to overwrite similar-named 8.3 files when "Merging Hotfixes", and I also placed the DX9.0C executable in a newly created SVC-DX9 subfolder. Anyway, the result was not pretty, and it was flawed in the following ways: 1.) DX9 was not installed, only DX7 2.) During the Windows installation, I received a "RunDLL32" error, but the install continued after I hit "end program". I have no idea which program this was. 3.) W2K then didn't want to start, i.e. I didn't see a taskbar or icons, just a green screen. Fortunately Alt-Ctrl-Del still pulled up the task manager, from there I could manually start executables. I started "explorer", then the taskbar appeared and stayed from thereon for subsequent boots. However, Windows Update didn't work until I re-installed IE6SP1 from the web as described earlier. XPCTHLST.TXT
  5. Hey Green Machine, Great Job. Just today I was facing a re-install of W2K on a non-networked PC, and I was not at all looking forwards to doing all the hotfixes manually. A program like XPCREATE was just what I had been looking for. Serves Micro$hit right for neglecting one of less revolting product lines and delaying SP5 for W2K indefinitely, to force us to consider WXP anew each month when the PC needs a revitalizing overhaul again. XPCREATE rulez! Its proactive approach in the face of corporate failure reminds me of Spybot Search & Destroy... Maybe you should call it "WinBug Search & Destroy: Eliminate 99% of known bugs and security loopholes even BEFORE you install them first!" Too bad it's between versions, I guess I'll check back again each day.
