Help! Win2000 not detecting my external HD
heymike replied to heymike's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Thanks for the reply... after beating my head against the wall for a day, I took the drive back to where I bought it. Turns out the drive enclosure was faulty! Pfffffft. -
Hey everyone... I just bought a 60gb external hard drive but windows won't recognize it! I actually had it running once by plugging it into the USB port on my laptop (it wouldn't register on my USB hub/pci card). When I did that, Windows automatically gave me the "adding new hardware" dialog box. But then, I had to restart the computer and now suddenly it's gone. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. Finding it through "Add/Remove Hardware" 2. Plugging it in, then restarting 3. Restarting, then plugging it in 4. Plugging it in, unplugging it, then plugging in again Do I need to adjust some network settings or something? Please help!! I've already moved a lot of stuff to the drive and I really can't afford to lose it. Thank you!!!! (about my HD: I'm in Korea and the only external drives available are ones where you have to buy the drive and then buy a separate case/enclosure to house it. The case has a USB port on it. No software was included - apparently not needed. The drive is a Fujitsu)

Thank you all for your help - the issue's been resolved and hopefully I'll never have to use a recovery cd again!! But if I do, I'll know how to deal with it. Thanks again~

FYI: my friend's computer is a laptop, so pulling out the hard drive isn't really an option. I'm using a laptop too... would networking them together help at all...?

Hi everyone, I'm totally new to this so please excuse my ignorance... I'm trying to help a friend recover files from her computer which is currently unable to startup (Win XP). When it starts, the computer automatically reboots itself at the XP title screen and just reboots over and over and over. So anyway, she needs to somehow recover files before reinstalling XP. I was hoping we could do one of two things with BartPE: A) get online and download, install, and use an FTP program to upload her files to a server - or - B) burn her files to CD Are either of these things possible? I just finished making the BartPE disc but when I tested it on my computer (Win2000) it looked like I was only able to access the contents of the cd. Is this because the BartPE cd was made with XP, an OS that I'm not running? When I run this disc on my friend's computer, will I have access to Internet Explorer and other programs on her hard drive? On one of my previous posts, likuidkewl suggested that I "use a partitioning program from inside PE to create her a partition to keep the files on"... but I have no idea how to do this!! And even if I were to manage to accomplish the partition I'm not sure I'd know what to do next. As you can tell, I know next to nothing about computer technical issues of this scale, but I'm trying to do my best here... Thank you~ Michael

THANK YOU!!!! I'm gonna test my BartPE disc now...

I don't know what I'm supposed to burn to the cd!! The BartPE instructions say "Burn the generated ISO image using a burning application" but the reason I'm confused is because a bunch of other files were also produced: The folder on the left is where I launched the pebuilder application (and it looks like that's where the ISO image was placed)... the folder on the right is the new folder that BartPE created after the iso image was created. Am I supposed to burn JUST the iso image in the folder on the left, or am I supposed to burn the stuff on the right as well? Please help - I'm so close to being done with this!! Thank you~

Got it - thank you!!!! Very much appreciated.

I posted this on the BartPE board too, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of eyeballs over there, so I hope nobody minds if I ask in this forum as well: When I unpack BartPE, the instructions tell me to also unpack the subdirectories... but there doesn't appear to be anything left to unpack. Here's what I pulled out of the zip file (pebuilder3032.zip): I know what a subdirectory is, I know how to use winzip... but I absolutely do not understand why the instructions for BartPE say "Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" Once again, I don't see anything else to unpack or unzip... do you? Help!! Anyone?

So, like I was saying... when I unpack BartPE, there doesn't appear to be anything left to unpack. Here's what I pulled out of the zip file (pebuilder3032.zip): I know what a subdirectory is, I know how to use winzip... but I absolutely do not understand why the instructions for BartPE say "Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" hehe... I know it may seem like I don't know how to use winzip (I do! really!!) but when I unzipped BartPE, there weren't any archives left to open. The only winzip file was the BartPE download, and within it I don't see where I could go further to unzip or unpack any subdirectories - that's what makes the instructions so confusing! There are 183 files within the BartPE download, and none of them are labeled as subdirectories. Sorry to be such a nuisance - just trying to get my bases covered before attempting this. thanks again everyone~
-
Ok... but the instructions say to "unpack" them! What files should I be unpacking?
-
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not sure I fully understand it though. Is winnt.sif a file from the XP installation cd that I have to modify before making the boot cd? and when I change that file, should it look like this: [Data] AutoPartition=0 [unattended] FileSystem=* [unattended] TargetPath=\WINDOWS_2 or this: [Data] AutoPartition=0 [unattended] FileSystem=* TargetPath=\WINDOWS_2 I'm not clear on what you mean by "Beware the windows installation path: "windows2" " And "do NOT erase the partition where windows allready is installed"... will it ask me if I want to do this? So sorry for all the questions!! I'm a total rookie.

Thanks likuid~ can I ask one more thing? The BartPE instructions say the following: "Just unpack the files from the PE Builder zipfile to some location you like. Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" I don't know what subdirectories they're talking about. When I unzipped BartPE there were 183 files but nothing labeled "subdirectories" and no other zip files are present. Thank you!!

Slimy, I tried the link for downloading simpleslipper2.exe but the link appears to be gone. do you know of another place where I could get it? thanks
-
Thanks Mahi - but what's the difference between a bootable CD and the installation CD? BartPE is telling me that I need an installation CD that's slipstreamed withe SP1... if I can manage to make a bootable CD with SP1, is that the same thing? Sorry, I'm new to all this. Thanks again~

Thanks bushidou, I'll try it... but I don't remember seeing that in the list of options. Even if it's there, I've got a feeling it won't work because these problems are never that easy to fix!!
-
Oh yeah - I've already tried F8 in windows XP and none of the options looked very helpful. There are no options that would allow me to alter the startup process and continue. I forget what the options were, but I know I looked at them several times.

My friend's computer has XP installed and it doesn't look like XP has a safe mode like 2000 does. I'm assuming I would have to install Win2000 first before using safe mode... and therein lies the question of whether or not I can safely do this on a machine that has a messed up version of XP on it...
-
My friend's laptop won't start - it keeps rebooting at the XP title screen - and I'm struggling to find a solution that I can execute. I've got the wrong version of XP for making a boot cd from BartPE, and apparently making a regular XP boot cd won't do me much good... so now I'm wondering if I can install Windows 2000 on her computer without losing the files that I'm trying to rescue? I know that Win2000 offers options for a "clean install" (which wipes out everything) and then there's another option that (I think) would co-exist with whatever's already on the computer. Am I nuts? Would this work?

Ok, I just found out for sure that it's SP1 isn't on the cd. Can I change that? (I've already tried copying the cd files to my HD but ran into an error with one of the files (photowiz) so my computer stopped copying the files.)
-
I'm trying to make a boot cd with BartPE and it says I need the installation CD for "Windows XP Professional (must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher) " I'm working off a cd copy and I'm guessing it's not slipstreamed with SP1. Is there a way to find out if it is? If it's not, is there a way that I can do this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've also got a question about BartPE for those of who have used it before... the instructions say the following: "Download the latest version of PE Builder, see the Download [#download] section on this page. Just unpack the files from the PE Builder zipfile to some location you like. Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" I don't know what subdirectories they're talking about. When I unzipped BartPE there were 183 files but nothing labeled "subdirectories" and no other zip files are present. Thank you~

Is there a BartPE FAQ available? If not, I'm hoping someone can help me with a couple questions... 1. My friend's computer won't start up correctly (Win XP). The goal is to bypass the faulty startup process (computer just keeps rebooting itself at the XP title screen) and burn her files to a cd before reinstalling the OS. Is BartPE the right tool for this job? I'm told that it is, I just want to double-check on this board. 2. Is there anything important that I need to know about using BartPE or making my BartPE cd? I'm not too technically savvy so laymans terms would be appreciated. Thank you~ Michael
