  1. Every time I turn on my laptop, it runs a trace in the background, which creates the .etl files that completely fill up the rest of my SSD space (3-4Gb). How can I get it to stop tracing every time I boot?
  2. @Magic Andre, How would I do that? I checked the bios and the SATA is set to AHCI as opposed to Compatibility Mode. Thanks, SonofNun
  3. Hey, could you look at this boot trace. I am running off of a SSD and am not that impressed with how fast it boots. Boot trace Thanks, SonofNun
  4. @DuskDragon Yeah, bad hardware can be an unseen problem. Someone I know's computer took 8 minutes to start, and I couldn't figure out why since the specs were very impressive. Well, after he gave it to me to sell for him, I booted it up to test it and it took well under a minute. I was very surprised! The best I can figure is the reason for the long boot time was all the usb devices he had plugged into it. It would spend four minutes alone in the bios screen, I figue trying to make sense of all the usb devices he had plugged into it. Thanks, SonofNun

  6. @DuskDragon, Are there any changes you made recently (within the last couple of days)? What is taking the longest is the LogonUI.exe. Another one that you can turn off because it takes almost 12 seconds is the GoogleUpdater.exe. You can turn that off in msconfig.exe Maybe MagicAndre will know exactly whats wrong. He seems to be a wizard at this. Thanks, SonofNun
  7. Thanks. I want to understand this topic inside and out so I can be doing this for other people without having to mess with the waiting involved with asking on this forum. (Not that I don't appreciate what you do to help, but if I am doing this on someone else's computer who wouldn't be able to do it themselves, I wouldn't have their computer long enough to wait for a response from here.) Thanks again for your help.
  8. @MagicAndre If my value for bootDoneViaPostBoot = 46951, that means it took almost 37 seconds to finish booting right? Thanks, SonofNun
  9. Laz, After looking at your boot trace, several main things pop out at me. 1) Roxio takes a total of around 25 seconds to start, so, depending on whether you use it, you can either uninstall it, or use MSConfig to turn off the startup of this program 2) Google updater should be turned off. It takes 5 seconds to start up. 3) I am not sure what facebook update is, but it takes a few seconds and probably is unnecessary. 4) OK, here is the big one. A WMI service takes 190 seconds, and a second WMI service takes 89 seconds, and a third one takes 76 seconds. I am not sure why there are three of these running and why they take so long, but it is unusual and we should try to find a fix for that. 5)Acrodist.exe (Adobe acrobat distiler) takes 52 seconds to start up. Try and see if you can shut it off using either the Services console or MSConfig If I understand it correctly, I think it shows that it takes around 4 minutes to complete startup. Does that sound right? How long have you used this installation of Windows? Thanks, SonofNun
  10. Try changing the directory in the command prompt to the "temp" folder. (In case you don't know how to do this, type - cd c:\temp - and hit enter.) Then you can run the command to convert it to xml. Thanks, SonofNun
  11. Here is the link to the ETL: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22446065/boot_BASE%2BCSWITCH%2BDRIVERS%2BPOWER_1.zip
  12. I am not sure that I am following you. There is no graph in the etl labeled Boot Phase.
  13. It didn't appear to be at full the whole time. Just for a little at the beginning 1/5th. then it was around normal. Either way, what do I do to fix it? Thanks, SonofNun
  14. After doing that, mine works . . . Sort of. Now it completes the trace without any errors, but when I try to analyze the trace, I get the following error: Any ideas?
  15. Thanks, I fixed my System restore problem. I told it to use a GB for that stuff. And Windows does manage my page file. It currently has it set to almost 4GB
  16. I personally haven't used System Restore ever on this computer, and I did install that hotfix. And I don't know if it is coincidental or not, but my System Restore is not working right now. Here is what I get: Like I said, I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but I thought that I would post it. Thanks, SonofNun
  17. I tried changing the registry values to this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction] "OptimizeComplete"="Y" "OptimizeError"="" "LcnStartLocation"="0" "LcnEndLocation"="0" "Enable"="Y" But it still doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong?
  18. After doing those things and ditching Norton for Microsoft Security Essentials, my boot time is now around 1 minute. I still would like to get it less if possible, but if not I will be satisfied with a minute.
  19. I don't know where Ulead came from, maybe Corel DVD movie factory? Either way, I don't use it so I'll remove it. I'll probably get rid of the Thinkvantage updater, but I like the Lenovo Power management, so I will probably just deal with that. What is the "Service UNS"? Do I need it? SQL Server installed when I installed Visual Studio 2010 (I take programming classes at my university). I don't need it, I don't get why it even affects the boot. I'll get rid of the Lenovo tools that I don't need. Sorry about the defrag tool. I don't usually install things like that, but I was "tricked" into believing that it would do a better job than windows would. Though when I think about it, if I allowed Windows to do it, it would know best where things are and should be. When I installed the three hotfixes, I thought that the cmd line that you gave was specific only to Vista, so I'll give that a shot. What do you suggest for an AV tool. Ever since version 4 of norton 360, I have been pleased with the performance. But if you say so . . . What do you think of Microsoft security essentials? Thanks again for all your help, SonofNun
  20. Internal defrag tool? You mean the one that comes with Windows 7? After Using Ultimate Defrag 3, my HDD is now 0% fragmented. Even Window says so. Thanks, SonofNun [Edit] Here is my most current Boot trace: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22446065/boot_BASE%2BCSWITCH%2BDRIVERS%2BPOWER_1.etl Thanks again.
  21. Thanks for the help. After changing some services and installing the three hotfixes, my boot time is down to ~1min 20sec. Which is nice, but I would like to get it lower if possible. Here is the xml file after all my tweaking: summary_boot.xml Right now I am using Ultimate Defrag 3 to defragment my HDD. Also, I thought I would provide a little info about my laptop. 2nd Gen Intel Core i5 2.3Ghz 4gb ram 320gb 7200 RPM HDD Thanks agian, SonofNun
  22. Hi, I'm new here. I was recommended here by someone from a Lenovo Forum. Ever since I installed Visual Studio 2010, my boot time went from ~45 seconds, to ~2 minutes and 30 seconds. So I followed the instructions in the post, but could you help me decipher it? summary_boot.xml Thanks, SonofNun
