  1. Here are some more software that I found that works with Windows 95, but is most likely no longer updated:

LAST - FREE - AOL Instant Messenger 4.8 ---- (no longer functional)

    LAST - FREE - Microsoft IntelliMouse (2003-11-11) --- http://priede.bf.lu.lv/ftp/pub/OS/peles/Microsoft/IntelliMouse/IP4_0EngALLMsi.exe

    ONGD - FREE - InfraView 4.4.4 (2016-12-20) --- http://www.irfanview.com/

    LAST - FREE - mIRC 4.1 (1996-04-27) --- http://www.oldversion.com/windows/mirc-4-1

    LAST - SHAR - mIRC 6.35 (2008-10-17) --- http://www.oldversion.com/windows/mirc-6-35

    LAST - FREE - Netscape 6.23 (2002-03-15) --- http://www.oldversion.com/windows/netscape-6-23

    ONGD - SHAR - Total Commander 9.0a (2016-12-14) --- http://totalcommander.ch/win/tcmd900ax32.exe

    LAST - SHAR - WinRAR 3.80 (2008-05-30) --- http://www.oldversion.com/windows/winrar-3-80

LAST - FREE - Yahoo! Messenger 5.6 --- (no longer functional)

I tried to load XnView 2.13 on Windows 95 guest and it's missing a entry point located in KERNEL32.DLL. Does anyone have any idea which version of XnView earlier than 2.13 is the last to work under Windows 95?

Also, I can't confirm this, but trying to view the About Box in the latest release of InfraView causes an Illegal Operation and crashes!

Lastly, I can't confirm if Total Commander 9.0a works on Windows 95 or now, but can try installing and running it to see if it works or not. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll fix it. :)

hi, do you know what exactly the "Visual C++ .NET 2003 Redistributables" does? does it update important files in the system? i did a general search up of what it microsoft visual c++ was through wikipedia, but i just wanted to know more specifically if its something that is recommended to install on any w95 system excluding anything else that it might need to function completely, but just the package you had put down, its only about 1 MB.

It is the latest Visual C++ redistributable available for Windows 95. It installs the MSVCR70.DLL and MSVCR71.DLL binaries in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to load software complied with Visual C++ 7.0 and Visual C++ 7.1. With the software operating using the working entry points under Windows 95, the application will run.

interesting, i didnt know there was a adobe reader 5.1 version for w95, i thought 5.0 was the last, however i just checked now and for adobe 5.1, it doesn't mention as windows 95 being supported, i checked 5.0.5 and does mention windows 95 as being supported. "ar505enu.exe" was the filename for the adobe reader 5.0.5 that i downloaded from oldversion, however from adobe's official site, it lists it as "a5u1tl.exe" for the 5.0.5 update. whats the difference? adobe's site says you need 5.0 already installed to install 5.0.5. i compared the two files and the oldversion one is smaller, only about 8.5 MB or so, but the one from adobe directly was about 13 MB. i renamed the adobe reader 5 when i first got it from the past that i have been using up to this point, im sure its got to be the 5.0 version exactly because the oldversion i just downloaded right now to compare was the same size, at 8.41 MB. anyone have experience on which versions they use exactly? honestly, i dont care if the 5.1 doesnt work, at least if i can get the 5.0.5 one that is only 8.5 MB or so, then it will still be a upgrade in compatibility and fixes, without sacrificing much of any space but the 13 MB one is significantly bigger and wouldnt want to use that one.

here is some other stuff that works on 95 osr 2.5:

    . aida32 3.94.2

    . hd tach 2.61

    . imgburn 2.4.4.0

    . sisoft sandra 2001

    . speedfan 4.28

    . cpu-z 1.32.1

. msn messenger 5.0 ( not sure if it works properly still )

I just loaded Adobe Reader 5.1 (2002-09-17) on Windows 95 and it still works. While it is not officially supported by Adobe, it is the last version shown to work on Windows 95.

Also MSN Messenger no longer works, because Microsoft shut the service down.

    LAST - FREE - AlfaMini 1.8.0 --- http://web.archive.org/web/20111220120548/http://www.alfasoftweb.com/download/alfamini_v1.80.exe

AlfaMini 2.0.0 doesn't seem to work on Windows 95.

    LAST - FREE - DirectX 8.0 (2000-11-04) --- http://www.oldversion.com/windows/directx-8-0

    LAST - FREE - Visual C++ .NET 2003 Redistributables --- http://www.mdgx.com/files/VC_R_71.EXE

I'm gonna test out IMGBurn 2.4.4 and CPU-Z 1.32.1 on Windows 95 later on! :)

Thats some good and bad news :)

Good News That we got some final updates(which werent expected)

Bad News They were the last ones :(

I would like to know what were present in those updates, please tell us as soon as you find out :)

This is the update that you need to install first: KB4015195

After you installed KB4015195 and reboot, you will need to apply these updates:

    KB890830 (Malicious Software Removal Tool)
    KB915597 (Windows Defender)
    KB4014661 (Cumulative Security Update)
    KB4014652 (Security Update)

All updates beyond KB4017094 will only be made available for Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

If this is correct you might want to put a "[sic]" after it. These pages come up blank for me (in SM2.0.4), so I couldn't test it myself. :(

The KB3165965 update that I linked in older updates is correct. If you're using a very old version of SeaMonkey, you will need to update to SM 2.46 stable. SeaMonkey 2.49, based on Firefox 52, will be the last to support Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 without R2.

april 11th 2017 updates for vista?

    Yep.

I'm currently waiting on the security updates for April 2017 to be archived. If I'm not lazy, I can check the update history on which security updates were made available for Windows Vista yesterday.

  7. 58 minutes ago, LoneCrusader said:

This is simply not true, at least in the case of OSR2.x. I've used 40GB and larger drives with 95 for years. This is an example (just one of many) of Microsoft spreading false information in order to promote a newer version of Windows. The 137GB/48-Bit LBA limit applies just as with 98/ME but there are no other random "limits." Can't say for sure about 95 RTM/95A (and since they use FAT16 it's mostly irrelevant) but I would not take Microsoft's word at face value for them either.

I'm gonna be thinking about getting a 64 GB or a 128 GB CF drive and put Windows 95 on the CF drive as it's using about 9.5% of the 29.7 GB of disk space right now.

  8. Sorry to revive this thread one last time, but this is the going to be the last Patch Tuesday for Windows Vista! After today, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates or provide any technical support for Windows Vista.

This is the final patch that you need to install before getting any updates on Windows Vista:

With the list of patches that you need to install after you install or re-installed Windows Vista, this will solve your problem now that Microsoft has dropped Windows Vista support.

  9. Sadly, Microsoft is dropping Windows Vista support after today. We don't know right now if there are any final updates or that Windows Vista is missing out on its last chance for a update until we check. :(

Update: There were 11 updates available on the Windows Vista platform today. However this is going to be the last time updates will be able on the OS.

  10. Found more software that supported Windows 95 in the past:

I said the corruption I saw was with Windows 10 NOT Windows 95.

Incidentally I tried the Demo of the Diskeeper Defragmenter years ago. It consistently corrupted a Partition larger than approximately 200GB.

Thank you for the correction. I honestly can't believe that the demo version of Diskepper Defragmenter would corrupt a partition this large! :(

As far as I can tell, Windows 95B and 95C can support Partitions up to 1TiB without Patches. A Patch is needed for the 137GB Physical Hard Drive Limit.
So far I have only had corruption on large FAT32 Partitions with Windows 10. Windows 7 and Windows 8 may be at risk but I have not tested them.

That doesn't sound too great to see that large FAT32 partitions are at risk of data corruption. Microsoft believes that the changes that are required to support hard disks and other media bigger than 32 GB would require architectural changes that will never be supported on Windows 95. Makes me want to think about purchasing a 64 GB CompactFlash drive and then running a test under ScanDisk to see if any data corruption persists.

Speaking of hard disk partitioning software, here are some more versions of software that supported Windows 95.

That link only gives you the name of the file, 9xME30.exe. You can get the actual file here, again I would scan the file to ensure it is not a virus: ftp://ftp.twin-net.com.br/antivirus/9xME30.exe

Thank you for the heads up.

For some reason, attempting to download ac530.exe leads to a 404 error. I'll find a way how to make ac530.exe available. :)

Anyways, I found more familiar versions of software that is the last to support Windows 95:

    LAST - FREE - XnView 1.82.4 --- http://download.xnview.com/old_versions/

If you're using VMware and if you want to get Sound Blaster PCI 128 support, you need to use version 5 hardware (virtualHW.version = "5") Installing this driver under VMware Workstation 6.0 will cause the Windows 95 VM to crash and become unbootable! You also need to disable the PCI bridge too.

Also, Windows 95 does not properly support hard disks and other media larger than 32 GB without risking possible data corruption. The largest hard drive that will handle Windows 95 would be a IBM Deskstar 34GXP: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/sizeGB30-c.html

If you have found anymore software that is the last to support Windows 95 or if it's ongoing, please post them here. :)

  15. I think that I solved my problem here.

I had to reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate x64 late last night, re-apply SP1, SP2, IE9 and re-install all of the updates. I had to install KB3217877 first before installing all of the remaining 214 updates.

I can't confirm if the problem has been solved until after the updates have been installed and the virtual machine reboots successfully. Once it does, I will update my comment.

Update: Problem is solved now! :)

All updates have been installed successfully! I can only hope that due to uncorrectable problems with Windows Update under Windows Vista is that customers miss out on their last chance for a update in a event if Microsoft doesn't issue any security updates next month.

    :)

I reinstalled update KB3217877 and the error still persists. I had to go to Advanced Boot Options select Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure and when Windows Vista attempted to start up, this is the BSOD error that I got:

    C000021A.png

I suspect that this issue is caused after installing the KB3217877 optional update. :(

  17. Is anyone able to confirm this?

I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x86 inside VMware Workstation Player 12 and when after I install the KB3217877 update and reboot, it results in a STOP error that can only be viewed for a fraction of a second and the Windows Vista guest OS reboots over and over.

Would it be possible to resolve this issue by fixing the security permission that caused Windows to fail to start or is it just another botched update that Microsoft needs to pull?

  18. Good job getting your 4 TB hard hard drive to work under Windows XP!

Hard drives can be formatted with the exFAT file system of up to 32 MB clusters at 2 ^ 32 sectors for a maximum total of 128 PB (144,115,188,075,855,872 bytes) which is also the maximum for the LBA-48 specification. :)

Currently, there are no software tools or hard drives to overcome the 128 PB barrier at this time.

Well, the fact that Winimage hasn't been updated means nothing, the software dates back to 1993 or 1994 originally, and it's not like anything actually happened in the meantime since 2013, except - maybe - the coming of the .vhdx format.

I seem to remember I had some issues in particular setups (non-standard "sectors before"), but a lot of time have passed so I am not too sure.

To save space do yourself a favour and use a sparse file (on NTFS of course) instead of a dynamic .vhd.

    jaclaz

That sounds like a giid idea. Any idea how can a sparse file on a NTFS volume can be created?

  20. 3 hours ago, jaclaz said:

Well, not really-really, through IMDISK you are still mounting a volume (as opposed to the "whole disk" and possibly multiple volumes) only you are doing it at a different level of integration to the OS, if you want to actually "open" a volume (without mounting and read only), 7-zip is better suited (limited to RAW files or fixed size .vhd's) or Winimage (R/W, with some hiccups, if I remember correctly).

    jaclaz

The VHD are actually dynamic to conserve disk space.

Speaking of WinImage, why does the software have some hiccups when it comes to read/write operations? It hasn't been updated since April 2013.
