  1. I think that I found the problem here. The 16-bit version of NetShow 2.0 came out sometime in 1997 and upon reboot, it caused errors referring to the INET16.CPL file. The only solution was to uninstall NetShow 2.0 and as a result, the Control Panel closed properly. I'm in the process of getting rid of 16-bit Netshow 2.0 once and for all.
  2. Okay, I'm playing around with Windows 3.1 (or Windows for Workgroups 3.11) under Virtual PC 2004. I have a lot of apps installed under the virtual machine. I start the Control Panel and it has all of the apps listed under the panel, including 16-bit Internet Explorer 5. However, when I close the Control Panel, this error message shows up: CONTROL An error has occurred in your application. If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file. If you choose Close, your application will terminate. Here's the exact screenshot for proof: http://twitpic.com/aydwu7/full When I click Ignore twice or click on Close, the Control Panel closes by itself. However, when I execute Control Panel, it does not start anymore until I restart Windows. I believe that this problem has to do with the INET16.CPL, a file that is a part of 16-bit Internet Explorer. This is a weird error that I believe is not easy to fix without having to reinstall Windows 3.1. Should I post the contents of the CONTROL.INI, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files to determine what it causing this and how can it get fixed?
  3. Do a search for Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE on Google to see if you can download it from other sites. If you do, you'll get this http://icst.fcu.edu.tw/download/ServicePack/Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE If you still want to install Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, you will have to use the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and copy the link above into the Wayback Machine search bar. The end result is this: http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6sp1/finrel/6_sp1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/ie6setup.exe The files that I linked to are in US English. Microsoft has been phasing out support for older browsers, including Internet Explorer 7 which recently had its Mainstream Support retired along with Windows Vista and Office 2007 earlier this year. I don't know if the Windows Update even works on Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000, older versions of Windows XP or the original release of Windows Server 2003. If it still does, then Windows Update will most likely not work 100% correctly. Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 will only be fully supported until 13 January 2015 when Windows 7 leaves Mainstream Support. I suspect that by the time Windows Server 2003 is out of support in July 2015, the Windows Update website maybe decommissioned completely. I'm hoping that someone will provide instructions on how to install Windows 2000 as installing it from scratch can become a serious limitation. After the installation, I will see if Windows Update still works or not. I still have it on one of my USB hard drives, btw.
  4. Thank you for clarifying that Dexpot is free for personal use. I thought that it wasn't free, but no...until I went to the Dexpot website and found that I can download it, freely for personal use only.
  5. You do get the "not a valid Win32 application" error if you try to launch it in a stock Win2k... but then after UURollup is installed it still checks for the OS version and refuses to launch The registry setting from above does exactly the same thing as KDW. The problem is that it's not permanent. I'd be interested in modifying the dexpot.exe once and for all. That's correct. I believe that the last free version of Dexpot was version 1.4, if I can recall.
  6. Yes, Opera 12.50 alpha works much better than the official "stable" 12.00 but it's still very far from perfect. By the way, the guys from http://dexpot.de/ did a lot of work to be sure that the new version of Dexpot 1.6 won't run in Win2k. It's built in VS2010 so by default it doesn't even launch in a stock Win2k... Normally the blockade is gone after installing unofficial kernel but not here. They even added a special "welcome" message which is displayed when trying to launch dexpot.exe after installing UURollup-v10b: I don't know how to patch the file (dexpot.exe) permanently but this reg files will let you switch dexpot.exe compatiblity on and off: Dexpot2k_ON.reg Dexpot2k_OFF.reg This is a temporary solution so if you reinstall the system or copy the Dexpot folder to a different system you'll have to add the registry entry again. I can't believe that they added the OS check stating that the operating system version is no longer supported or that it no longer even supports some versions of Windows XP. If Dexpot 1.6 doesn't even launch on Win2k, you'd get a error that the "access to the directory is invalid" or "[filename.exe] is not a valid Win32 application". I'm wondering if it's even possible to using a utility that will remove OS checks or use KDW, set the compatibility to Windows Server 2003 and try to run the app. By the way, I suspect that after version 1.6 of Dexpot, it's obvious that version 1.7 maybe complied in MSVC 2012 and it will most likely not support Windows XP/Server 2003 at all.
  7. I kinda imaging that Opera 12 is extremely buggy on all platforms. I was wondering of Opera 12.01 and Opera 12.1x fixed these problems.
  8. Well, frankly speaking, this is only my opinion but Opera for desktop seems to be almost dead anyway The only (really, not so called) stable version of Opera is 11.64 while the whole 12.xx series is extremely buggy. Opera has never been known for its stability (it used to crash on javascript / Flash a lot) but the current situation is just terrible. I always used Opera but recently have almost switched to Firefox as it's just much more stable, offers a lot of more functions and customisation, there are many more useful extensions available, etc. Opera's only advantage over Firefox is that it's faster (especially the fact that the UI is responsive even when many pages are being loaded which is a problem in Fx) but there are just too many other flaws. That's what i've been thinking. Only 2.2% of users still use Opera and the developers biggest reasons why Win2k support is being dropped is not only that OS hasn't been supported for almost two years, but now less than .1% of users still use that OS and sadly vendor support is fading; infact, almost all vendors have dropped support for that OS and it has became increasingly difficult, if not impossible for the team to continue to maintain Opera support for Opera. I kinda feel sad that dropping Opera support on Win2k was a tough decision for them. How did you know that Opera 12 on Win2k is extremely buggy, btw?
  9. Thanks for telling me. GetUserGeoID is present starting with Windows XP SP2. We don't know if Opera 12.50 will also discontinue support for older hardware such as the Pentium III or the AMD Athlon XP too. In that case, Opera 12.50 will not support Win2k, Windows XP without SP2 or Windows Server 2003 RTM anymore.
  10. Corrected There exist browsers other than Chrome / Firefox / IE / Opera that do support Win2k. As for Opera 11.50: It requires uxtheme.dll and one dependency related to kernel32.dll in opera.dll to be fixed. It's still compiled in VS2008 (?) so no unofficial kernel is required to run. Thanks for telling me. By the way, do you mean Opera 12.50 or Opera 11.50. Opera is indeed still compiled with Visual Studio 2008, but when Opera 12.50 is released after this year, I bet that it will start including dependencies that do not exist on Win2k. What dependency in kernel32.dll in opera.dll are you talking about, btw?
  11. the latter builds of Flash Player 10.3 (10.3.183.15 and greater) won't install nor run under Win2000 w/out KernelEx for Win2000 or KDW / FCWIN2k. Flash Player versions 10.3.183.11 and earlier can install and run on Win2k without the need for unofficial kernel32 for Win2000. Opera has ended support for Win2000 starting with Opera 12.50 snapshot build 1513. so last version of Opera to support Win2000 is Opera 12.00 (or 12.01 if ever that one comes out). I have a couple of questions here: 1. Has Opera stated that Windows 2000 (and older versions of Windows XP) will no longer be officially supported in Opera 12.50? 2. What dependencies will Opera use that do not exist either in Opera 12.50? Starting in Opera 13, it's obvious that the support code for Windows 2000 will get removed for sure. There will eventually be a Opera 12.1x and it's obvious that Opera will continue to support Win2k until the end of this year. With Opera dropping Win2k support and Firefox 10 ESR coming to a end after 2012, there will be no supported browser that will work on Win2k anymore.
  12. I personally believe that switching to BlackWingCat's kernel32.dll is a very good idea. I sure hope that the bugs get ironed out before the switch occurs.
  13. The issues regarding the ntdll.dll are gone in UURollup-v10a. I'm wondering if version 5.0.2195.7085 of ntdll.dll will fix the issues that I experienced for a while.
  14. Thank you so much! All of the bugs should be fixed without anymore problems!
  15. Okay, I found that the second beta of UURollup v11 worked! In the Windows 2000 VMware VM, I first applied UURollup v9b, then UURollup v10 and lastly, the second beta of UURollup v11! Once UURollup v11 b2 was applied, Internet Explorer 6, Character Map and Outlook Express worked properly! Can we investigate the files that were used in UURollup v10 that caused incompatibilities, including causing IE6 to crash on right clicking the mouse, Character Map and Outlook Express not executing correctly? Once gain, thanks for the help, tomaz86! I really appreciate it. Once the final version of UURollup v11 is out, I will apply it on the Win2k host PC! Update: I would like to conclude that NTDLL.DLL version 5.0.2195.7084 was riddled with bugs! I applied UURollup v11, but will have to stick with the stable version of NTDLL.DLL until the bugs from version 5.0.2195.7084 are fixed.
  16. I will test it out in a Win2k VM and report back. Can you send me a note with the link to the new test version of UURollup v11 first before I do it?
  17. I ran UURollup v11 beta and still the same thing. Internet Explorer 6 does not work properly and Character Map refuses to run. In addition to this, Character Map crashes and throws this message in the Application Log section of the Event Viewer...so we may find the culprit: I'm wondering if LdrShutdownThread has been implemented in ntdll.dll in this version, UURollup v10 or not or if it's causing problems? As for Internet Explorer 6, it would be a good idea to weed down which dependency or DLL is causing IE6 to crash upon using the right click on the mouse. I might have to run UURollup v9b and UURollup v10 and then apply UURollup v11 beta while this is being investigated.
  18. Preparing a fixed version of UURollup v10 would sound good. I could have cleared the update.ver file on the host PC, but it might have been too late to reverse the changes now. I guess that I will have to wait until the fixed version of UURollup v10 is released. Thanks so much for the help and let me know if a fixed version of UURollup v10 (v10a revision) is ready! Edit: As far as I know, the fixed version of UURollup will be version 11 (v11) and not 10a as I recall.
  19. Yep. I can conclude that all of the files should be properly updated with the ones coming from UURollup v10, but it's not doing that. But, everything did went okay after I installed USP 5.1 and installing UURollup v9b. I can now clearly confirm that IE6 (in regards to the right clicking the mouse that causes the browser to crash) and Character Map got broken after installing UURollup v10. If there is going to be a UURollup v10a, for me, it would be best to either wait or revert back to UURollup v9b. If UURollup v10a does come out, I will have to test it out in a Win2k VM before applying it on the host PC.
  20. I saw your note last night and I applied USP 5.1, before applying UURollup v9b and then UURollup v10. Problems still arose when I right clicked the mouse button in Internet Explorer 6 and Character Map not working at all due to an Access Violation (0xC0000005). I will get back to you via notes when I have the time. I once again, reapplied these updates here's what I found. The original versions of the following files remain untouched either in a clean installation of Win2k with the updates from the Windows Update website applied and applying USP 5.1: ntkrnlmp.exe -> 5.0.2195.7376 ntkrnlpa.exe -> 5.0.2195.7376 ntkrpamp.exe -> 5.0.2195.7376 ntoskrnl.exe -> 5.0.2195.7376 shell32.dll -> 5.0.3900.7155 Now, when I apply UURollup v9b, the versions of the files below change: ntkrnlmp.exe -> 5.0.2195.7381 ntkrnlpa.exe -> 5.0.2195.7381 ntkrpamp.exe -> 5.0.2195.7381 ntoskrnl.exe -> 5.0.2195.7381 shell32.dll -> 5.0.3900.7680 But when I apply URollup v10, the versios of these files: ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrpamp.exe and ntoskrnl.exe do not change. They remain at version 5.0.2195.7381. The version of shell32.dll also remain at 5.0.3900.7680. Now, looking in the C:\Windows2000-UURollup-v10-x86-ENU directory, ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrpamp.exe and ntoskrnl.exe all have version 5.0.2195.7382. What I found is that the version of shell32.dll in that directory is version is newer, but has a lower revision of 5.0.3900.7171. Now, the version of kernel32.dll found in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory is 5.0.2195.7154. That file was untouched when I applied the update from UURollup v9. The version of the kernel32.dll remains the same in the same C:\Windows2000-UURollup-v10-x86-ENU directory. So, in short...something is amiss with some of the offending files in the UURollup v10 here.
  21. Okay, I will try that and verify the file versions of NTKRNLPA.EXE and NTOSKRNL.EXE. The versions of those files will be compared with the original version and UURollup v9. I will once again report back with the results. I already commented out shell32.dll too incase you didn't know.
  22. I already unpacked v9b and v10 respectively. I didn't even touch the files in the v9b version of update.inf (located in Windows2000-UURollup-v9b-x86-ENU) and yes, I did remove all of the lines except the first line in update.ver of that directory and IE6 worked properly. In the update.inf file located in the C:\Windows2000-UURollup-v10-x86-ENU directory, I already commented out the line with ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrpamp.exe and ntoskrnl.exe with a ; in the beginning, installed UURollup v10, rebooted and still, neither IE6 nor Character Map didn't work properly. Installing v9b worked fine, but I can verify that something is buggy with v10 involving the right clicking mouse in Internet Explorer 6 and the Character Map app.
  23. Oh, dear. You're absolutely right! We thought that this would be the final update, but no...there is a bug in UURollup v10! I feel that it would be safer to revert to v9b. I will launch the VM, reinstall UURollup v9, modify the update.inf file and report back when I'm done. This shouldn't have a effect at all since this is on a motherboard with a single core processor. As for the bug in UURollup v10, please do fix it and hopefully, there will be a UURollup v10a...the update that fixes the bugs that I described in this thread. Update: Okay, relaunched the Windows 2000 VM, I even disabled the following files (added ; at the beginning): ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrpamp.exe and ntoskrnl.exe. When that was done, I reinstalled UURollup v9b and UURollup v10. After the reboot, the same thing happened. Right clicking the mouse still crashes IE6 and the Character Map fails to work correctly.
  24. Thank you for the help. I do agree that there is indeed something wrong in UURollup v10 that might be causing problems. It would be good to extract the contents Windows2000-UURollup-v9b-x86-ENU.exe and Windows2000-UURollup-v10-x86-ENU.exe and investigate to see which offending files could be causing the right click mouse functionality in Internet Explorer 6 and Character Map to not work correctly.
  25. I apologise for the spam and updating this comment, but I did the following as you suggested: 1. I extracted the UURollup v9b file, removed everything in the "update\update.ver" file, ran update.exe and installed it. I rebooted the Windows 2000 VM and ran Internet Explorer 6. When I clicked on the right mouse button, everything went fine. 2. After installing UURollup v9, I extracted the contents of UURollup v10, disabled the lines containing references to shell.dll and ran update.exe. After rebooting the Windows 2000 VM, I ran Internet Explorer 6 and when I clicked on the right mouse button, Internet Explorer 6 still crashed. So no matter how many times I installed UURollup v10, Internet Explorer 6 wouldn't work correctly and Character Map refused to run at all. Something appears to be wrong here. I'm wondering if it's even possible to replace the shell32.dll file from UURollup v10 or not. If so, I would have to boot from the DOS prompt to do that since the hard drive is formatted using the FAT32 partition.
