  1. Further testing seems to support my supposition that this is a problem of credential caching. Logged in as the 'English' user if I manually enter "¥¥machinename¥" in Explorer I'm prompted for credentials and can then access all the shares on the remote Mac. Logged in as the 'non-English' manually entering "¥¥machinename¥" in Explorer takes me straight to the public folders on the Mac. But if I enter "¥¥machinename¥sharename¥" I'm prompted for credentials and can then access the share. I've been searching the registry but can't find where these credentials might be stored. Whilst it's not related to the problem, for some reason the Mac machine name and icon no longer appear in the "Network" section of Explorer even though I have made no changes to settings since last testing. This is an inconvenience rather than a problem as I can manually type the name but if anyone knows what controls whether or not the icon appears I'd be grateful if you could let me know. Thanks
  2. I have been trying to get to the bottom of a connection problem for days but am stumped and wonder whether anyone has any ideas. I have a machine running Windows 7 with two users both with admin rights. The only (intentional) differences between the rights and settings for the two users are the locale and display language. But even though I can connect to a Mac running OX X 10.6.8 on the same LAN from one of the users, I can't from the other. The machine appears in the network for both users, but for one when I open it I am not prompted for credentials and I can only see the public folders. How can I force Windows 7 to prompt for authentication so I can connect using credentials from the Mac? For the first user this happened without me having to do anything (or at least I was not aware of doing anything to specifically make it prompt for credentials). Both users have the LAN Manager authentication level set to "LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated"
  3. Can anyone give me any pointers on a frustrating problem. Something seems to be changing my Active Desktop settings. I had a JPG set as my desktop. A day or two ago it disappeared and I was left with a single colour desktop. Checking the settings I noticed that only BMPs were being displayed as potential images and the "web" tab had disappeared from the custom settings so I checked the registry. I found that the "NoActiveDesktop" key had been set to "1". I have tried setting it to "0" and deleting it altogether. In both cases the "web" tab reappears and the list of images in desktop properties shows JPGs again. However, if I select one it gets previewed in the settings dialog but I cannot apply it. If I click "OK" nothing happens (other than the dialog closing). If I click "Apply" it appears that I have clicked the button because it then greys out until I select another image, but again the image does not become my desktop. Whichever change I make, after rebooting the machine the "NoActiveDesktop" value gets reset to "1". Very frustrating! There is no "NoActiveDesktopChanges" key at all. I have also tried to add that but it has no effect on the problem. It may or may not be relevant but I am changing the value of the key in HKLM. It doesn't appear in "Current User" at all. Thanks
  4. I did some testing with English and had no problems which suggested that the problem might not be the VM environment after all ... so I did some more searching. I found the answer in the MSFN Windows XP forum It seems that this is a problem with Japanese XP. If anyone comes across this and is looking for the answer have a look at the thread "Bug with Japanese XP".
  5. As you suggest this does just look like a timing issue. If I understand correctly the programs which run without problem are all local and it is only the exe on the remote machine which fails. It is likely that the network is not available when runonce runs. Have a look at this thread Edited to add the link to a potential solution.
  6. Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately, at the moment I don't want to re-install on my laptop so I can't test on hardware. Last time I used nlite I tested in VMWare and nlite hasn't changed so if that's the problem then it is the new version of VMWare or the difference in language (last time I was building an English version, this time it is Japanese). I will test with English to see what happens.
  7. I am hoping someone can give me some idea where I am going wrong. I have used nlite a couple of times in the past to create up-to-date install CDs with drivers for my sons' laptops and had no problems at that time. I am now trying to make a generic disc for my own use from a non-OEM CD but I can't seem to make a disc which works even though I am just adding hotfixes and updates. I am starting with an XP SP2 disc and integrating SP3 then hotfixes/updates. Every time I create an ISO and test it the machine blue screens. To troubleshoot I have tried in stages. Integrating SP3 is no problem. I get a bootable disc (I have also manually slipstreamed and confirmed I get an identical set of files). Adding updates is where it goes wrong. I have even tried with just one update (once with KB898461 as that is the first update to install automatically after installing from the SP3 disc, once with KB923789 as the oldest critical update) but although nlite doesn't indicate there are problems, I end up with an image which does not install. In all cases the BSOD shows there is a problem with win32k.sys. I am not changing anything else at all - no components removed, no attempts at configuration. All of my tests are done by booting VMs from ISOs (which is how I have tested the last time) so the problem is not connected to CD burning. Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong and what I could try to fix it?
