Thanks. I looked into that. I have an older PC with only 1GB of RAM. I read that more is needed to set up a virtual machine.

Thanks -X- I'll burn the CD and give it a go. Very cool program ! Is there any way to confirm the wget, exe isn't included?

I just did my first slipstream with nLite. All went fairly well thanks to your previous explanations. When I selected the Post-SP3 Windows Updates from the batch file download (UDC-04.15.11b), I accidentally included the wget file for integration. During the integration process, I received an error that just suggested I document the problem, but let me continue on and finish the entire process. Before I burn the ISO to the CD and try installing it, would you recommend that I start over and recreate the ISO without this wget file, or do you think this should not cause a problem loading and running XP? Thank you very much...

Thanks -X- for the straightforward response. I get it now. Will go forward with the download. And thanks again for putting together the Updates list. That's really generous...

What can I say Dude. I AM a newbie. Bet you were one too at some point. :-) I read that in XP, double clicking a Zip file is the same as extracting. I just looked it up again in the MS Knowledge base, and it "appears" to be what they are saying. (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/cf_extract.mspx?mfr=true) Double clicking DOES work. However, I just figured out what I did wrong in the "double click method". I didn't drag the uncompressed file to a new location. Just tested it and it works the same as your method. Although, your procedure is simpler and faster. So... yet again, you taught me something new. Thank you. As long as you are showing me the errors of my ways, there is one thing I'm still not clear about. When opening the .cmd file, the DOS message sounds like it is comparing the Windows Updates in the batch file to the updates already installed on the PC, and excluding the ones that are not needed. I may be (and probably am) misinterpreting that, but I need to know because I want to create a CD with ALL updates since SP3 release. If it excludes any because they are already installed, then that is an issue. So... care to clarify another newbie mistake I am making? Thanks SubMix...

Downloaded Windows Updates zip file from new URL http://xdot.tk/updates.html. Opened folder which contained UDC-04.15.11.cmd and wget.exe. Double clicked UDC-04.15.11.cmd, then RUN Get same error message each time and 2 different PC's: "wget missing! Place wget.exe in same directory as this batch file. Press any key to exit" Tried different directories on PC. Tried downloading from IE7 instead of Firefox. Installed .NET Framework 2.0. No change. Suggestions? Thanks

Thanks very much -X-

Thank you both very much for the explanation. That really clarified things. Regarding the folder location: I use Firefox, and as you know, it downloads everything to a folder called "Downloads" in "My Documents". That is where the zip folder went. I don't usually work out of the Downloads folder so I moved the folder with the unzipped UDC-04.15.11 folder to the Desktop. As mentioned previously, got error messages trying to open the batch file there. When moving the UDC-04.15.11 folder (that the Zip folder created) to the C: directory, it appeared to work, but then I stopped due to concerns about where the download was going to end up. After downloading the Zip file from the Updates site, and unzipping it, where do you recommend I locate it? You have indicated that both locations I selected are not appropriate. Once I get this batch file open, I'm assuming that the list of Windows updates will populate the folder with the batch file in it, and that list is what I integrate into nLite. Thank You Again.

Thank you. I had the folder on my desktop and was getting errors. Moved the folder to the C: root directory and it seemed to work there. It gave me the message that it was about to download some/or all updates, and move obsolete updates to a separate folder. This gave me the impression that it was about to install these updates in my running Windows program. Will the list of updates just be downloaded to this UDC-04.15.11 folder? I am trying to download the list of updates to prepare for the nLite integration. Is this the proper time and place to be downloading the updates for nLite? It was the statement about "moving obsolete updates", that made it sound like this was looking at my Windows installation. Thank You...

Hello again. On the Windows XP Post SP3 High-Priority Updates (x86) site (http://win-x.site40.net/updates.html), there is a link to download a batch file of all the listed updates (called UDC-04.15.11.zip). I downloaded it an unzipped the folder. There are 2 files inside (UDC-04.15.11.cmd and wget.exe). I thought a batch file had a .bat extension. In any case, I have tried to find instructions on how to extract the Windows Update files from these 2 files. I have also experimented with each of them, and can't get any sort of extraction or download. I just can't seem to figure out how these work. I've not worked with these types of files before, and can't seem to get any further. At the risk of upsetting anyone on the forum :-), I am respectfully asking for some guidance on this. (No spoon-feeding necessary.) I would appreciate any help you can spare. Thank you very much. PS: I believe I now understand how to properly use nLite, so hopefully this will be my final request for assistance.

Thanks to ALL... and have a great evening. (Is this in the right thread? )

Thank you for the response. I found your list of Post SP3 updates. That is very generous of you to do all that work and share it with others. Just to address one point you made... Before I discovered this wonderful forum of expert information (no sarcasm intended), I spent a lot of time on another, less informed forum, where I was asked politely to start a new thread for each new question. I just assumed that was the standard practice for forum participation. My apologies for not being aware of the guidelines for MSFN. My point was only, this. You could have given me, as a new member, the same suggestions without being so rude about it. This is the first time I've heard any of this, so there was no need to lay into me. I hope to continue to use this forum, as well as your generous support. At this point, I would appreciate it if we can move forward and respect the fact that each of us has had an opportunity to express our position. I plan to run my first slipstream using nLite, and incorporate your list of post SP3 updates. Although you have included some instructions, I freely admit that it is a bit over my head. So as not to appear "spoon fed", I'll just try it and see what happens, rather than ask any questions at this point. I'll close with a sincere thanks for the information you have given me, as well as all the work you put into your updates site. (Forgive me if I am in error and that is not your site)

Thank you all for the information. Submix8: I appreciate the information and leads you gave me. I have spent all morning reading about this, and there is so much information that I was beginning to get confused. I'm obviously not as seasoned as you, but am trying to learn. When I first discovered this forum, someone welcomed me and said that there are always people here to help. That made me feel welcomed, and that it was safe to ask questions... even stupid ones. I have always tried to avoid sites where advanced users took a position of superiority, and made others feel small. I agree, that I have an obligation to research, and not be lazy. But I have done so, for many hours. With all due respect, perhaps you are so advanced in your computer knowledge, that your never had time to learn about common courtesy and respect for other people. Even if I made an error in the proper use of this forum, I see no reason for rude comments, angry faces, and being lectured to like a school child. If you don't want to help me, that's fine, but please spare me the arrogance. You certainly could have made your point in a polite way. I have always been polite and very appreciative for those of you who offer your time to help others such as me. Thank you Submix, for making me feel uneasy about posting questions on this site going forward...

I'm new to slipstreaming and nLite. Plan to start with an XP-"SP0" CD and slipstream SP3. Last time I manually loaded SP3, there were over 100 Windows updates I had to load once Windows was up and running. I was just wondering if it's possible to add these post-SP3 Windows updates during the SP3 slipstream using nLite? Thanks...
-
Thank you. Glad to hear it (again), that I can go from sp0 to sp3 ! Think I'll try nLite. There's a lot more step by step tutorials available for that utility. I'm sure this is quite simple, but never having done it, and just reading about it, can make it sound more involved than it probably is. Thanks again all...

Looked up AutoStreamer. I have no idea if this other post knows what he is talking about, but thought I'd throw it out here just to make sure. ( http://discuss.pcmag.com/forums/thread/1004403865.aspx ) I initially asked (above) if I needed to slipstream from XP-SP0 CD... SP1a, or SP2 before SP3. Most agree that is not necessary. Then I read this: The article states that any version of the Windows XP installation disc may be used (e.g. XP, XP SP1, XP SP1a and XP SP2) to slipstream the XP SP3. Although, it is true that you can successfully slipstream SP3 to any of these, there is a problem with doing so. After slipstreaming SP3 to Windows XP and installing it, I was unable to install any version ( 7, 8, 9 or 10) of Musicmatch. I then slipstreamed SP3 to Windows XP SP2, installed it and then was able to install all version of Musicmatch. I did not attemp to try slipstreaming SP3 to SP1 or SP1a. Hopefully this information will help anyone slipstreaming SP3. P.S. If you only have an XP disc or have XP SP1 or SP1a disc, then slipstream SP2 first and then slipstream SP3 and you will have no problems. I also read several posts that say nLite is easier to use than AutoStreamer. I know that everyone has their own opinion about these things. 1) Can anyone comment about this guy's problem slipstreaming directly from SP0 to SP3? 2) Any other feedback on nLite vs AutoStreamer? Since I've never done this before, I'm looking for simple and stable. Thanks again...

Thank you. I now understand perfectly.

That's fantastic! Can someone tell me why nLite is not recommended? From what I have read, it "seems" easier. Also, I did not receive an email notification of your responses. I did the other day. Can someone tell me what setting I am missing? I checked my Settings > Notifications, and it's a bit difficult for me to understand all of them. Thanks so much...

I have a copy of XP Home with no service packs. I understand that you must have SP1 or SP2 prior to loading SP3 on a running Windows system. I've read all sorts of conflicting information about this. Some people say, if you're slipstreaming you can go directly from XP-SP0 to SP3. Others say you must have SP1 or SP2 before slipstreaming SP3. Still others say that it is better to have SP1 than SP2 (and vise versa) before loading SP3. So I'm totally confused. This will be my 1st experience with nLite. I would like to know, if I first need to load SP1 or SP2 before slipstraming SP3, can I integrate both SP's at the same time with a single nLite slipstream? If not, can I slipstream SP1 or 2 with nLite, make the complete file, then start over and slipstream sp3 as a final version? So what exactly is the best procedure? Again, my primary question is can I do everything I need to do in one shot with nLite. Thanks... (I hope I made sense)
-
I'm sorry but I'm not sure I'm following. Are you saying that in the case of XP, you can integrate SP1a, but you cannot integrate SP3, because SP3 must be loaded AFTER Windows is launched? This would actually be a fair compromise, as it would allow me to load my XP CD directly to my >137GB HDD. That's my primary goal in this. Thank You...
-
I don't believe you can install SP3 without first installing SP1a
-
Hello. I am new to this forum, and to nLite. I have an XP Home UPGRADE CD, upgraded from Win98. No service packs on XP CD. As all must know, when doing a fresh install, first I must load XP, then SP1a, then SP3 (this procedure doesn't work well with HDD's over 137GB) Two Questions before I get into nLite: 1) Can I use nLite to add service packs to an UPGRADE CD? 2) Can I add SP1a AND SP3 to my XP using nLite? (if so, does the order matter?) Thank you...
