  1. There are some good forums with tutorials such as byopvr.com or thegreenbutton.com. The best place to buy the specialized hardware you need is at PCAlchemy.com. The Summer Special Edition of MaximumPC was almost entirely devoted to building a PVR from scratch. You can find many more resources, guides and tutorials by googling building a PVR. If you are running windows, Windows Media Center Edition 2005 is pretty good but costs about $130. I think GB-PVR is actually superior and it is free. It is more difficult to set up but they do have pretty good tutorials. If you are going to do anything with the videos that you download, GB-PVR is the best bet because it uses the standard MPEG2 format whil MCE uses a wierd microsoft propriety format and the saved files all have to be converted to MPEG2 before you can do anything with them. They do not have the quality of MPEG2 and I think you would be disappointed in the display on you HiDef.
  2. The TV Wonder Elite will work and is the best choice of ATI cards. It is $150 however. You can go to microsoft.com and find the media center page and it will have a hardware compatibility list. The other thing you will need is a micorsoft MCE remote control. The best place to get MCE hardware and supplies is at PCAlchemy.com. thegreenbutton.com has good help and tutorials to help you build your system. You might also try byopvr.com
  3. I am using BartPE. The problem is not with PE as the Norton Ghost factory build behaves the same. I have turned off all firewalls on the target machines, Windows and Zonealarm. The problem is the configuration of the SP2 machines since builds of PE that were able to contact the machines when they were SP1 now are unable to contact the same machines that are now SP2. The home network continued to work normally with no changes in file and printer sharing after I updated. I have made builds from Sp2 and it doesn't help. Something has changed in SP2 in the intranet protocol. I am using Factory.exe and netcfg.exe versions 5.2.3790.0 in my builds. Is there possibly something later? I have tried Pnetcfg.exe v2.20 and it works the same. If someone else is able to network with SP2 machines I would like to know how they did it. If other people are having the same problems, I would like to compare notes.
  4. I have a simple home network with a NetGear WGR614 v4 router at the heart. I was able to connect to all of the machines on the network from any machine on the network that was booted into BartPE. After some of the machines were converted to XPSP2 I found that I could only connect to the machines still running SP1. After further troubleshooting, I found that if I mapped a share on a SP2 computer before trying to access it, I could then access all of the shares on that machine. If I tried to access a share on a computer before mapping a share on a computer, nothing would allow me access to that computer. I have later tried Norton Ghost 9.0 with exactly the same symptoms. I have tried changing the security level on the SP2 machines to low and anonymous logon to no avail. Does anyone know how to change XPSP2 to allow access over a network by WinPE?
