  1. I use a 40GB SSD on a Windows 7 Lenovo laptop. It has been working great for 2 years. Here is my setup routine:

    * Command Line: Disable Hibernation:

    powercfg -h off

    * Control Panel / System / Advanced / Performance / Advanced / Virtual Memory = 0 if RAM is good.

    * Control Panel / User Accounts / Change your picture = something kewl

    * Control Panel / Power Options

Set to High performance then "Change plan settings" then "Change advanced power settings"

Turn off hard disk after = 0 (never)

Turn off display after = whatever

    * Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows features on or off

UNCheck Tablet PC Components & Windows Search

    Install FileSearchEX

    * Clean up the "%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo" folder

    * Organize the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" folder

    * Right Click on C: drive and UNCheck "Allow files on this drive to have contents..."

  2. Run gpedit.msc

    * Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Administrative Templates / System / Power Management / Sleep Settings

Turn Off Hybrid Sleep (Plugged In) = Enabled

Allow Standby States (S1-S3) When Sleeping (Plugged In) = Disabled

  3. Try nirsoft "SearchMyFiles"

I have seen their stuff before but did not know they made a search tool. Over complicated of course so I prefer FileSearchEX for just getting file lists. One thing is certain with 500 and 1000 GB drives we need faster disk access to make all this data management bearable. As soon as I can I am going to get SSD so searching will be so much faster.

  4. To be honest, I hate windows 7 and vista search..its annoying, not very user friendly and i just plain dont like it. Is there anyway to get the classic windows xp search (not that windows search 4.0 crap) but the search companion installed and working with win7. I'm not in it for speed, or indexing or anything else. I just like the interface in xp for searching for files..its simply and it works.

    Any thoughts,

I feel your pain. Just started using FileSearchEX and loving it!

  5. I've recently reformatted my HD and installed Windows 7, since then I've been getting freezes at random moments.

Install the Intel chipset and storage drivers. I was having this same issue until I did that.
