I read that. I added the runtime addon (MicrosoftRuntimeLibraries-1.4.8-Addon.7z) from the very beginning of trying it out. Still doesn't work. Edit: To clarify a little bit: I have the clean SP2 iso. I slipstream SP3 into it. After that I add the above mentioned addon. In the guide it clearly says that the rest of the prerequisites are native to SP3, which I have slipstreamed. After adding said addon, I continue with adding a few more, for good measure (Such as the IE8-addon, some hotfixes etc). Furthermore, I tried the "WMP11 Integrator" program, which works, but I get some error dialogs during GUI setup (I will have to recreate the ISO to get hold of a screenshot if need be), but WMP11 is still installed. I've tried integrating WMP11 prior to slipstreaming SP3 as well as post-SP3, but the error shows regardless.

Sp0iLeDBrAt; I have tried the Silent .NET Maker, and it just gave me a headache trying to understand wtf I'm supposed to do. First of all which files to download. Another attempt I did was doing it like this. I downloaded DotNetFX35SP1_20091024_Addon_ENU.cab . Tried it in both SVCPACK.INF and in RunOnceEx - nothing happens. At all.

I got IE8 + WMP11 integrated, it was in fact an easy task. Anyway, the error I got from the OP, is apparently related to slipstreaming this file into the ISO with nLite: WGA_Validation_AddOn_1.9.40.0-2_-_redxii.7z It was listed on http://win-x.co.cc/updates.html ..I skipped adding it altogether and I could proceed with installing. However getting .NET Framework in is a whole other matter. I have tried it so many times in different ways, now I am beginning to think I should just drop it..

I used Google Search and opened the cached page, since the search engine in here sucks.. Anyway, it was stated that the issue was regarding adding IE8 hotfixes. I'll try to disregard any hotfix related to IE8 and come back with an answer whether it worked or not.

I don't know why it is happening, but it is, and I'll provide as much info as I can. I was creating an unattended ISO. The original ISO was Windows XP SP2, and I slipstreamed SP3 into it. After that, I added a long list of Hotfixes, the ones listed here: http://win-x.co.cc/updates.html However, during the adding of these Hotfixes, I got one error, saying: "This hotfix isn't made for this Windows version!" It was Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) Continuing on, I removed components, then proceeded through the Unattended section. When all the procedures were done, I used cdimagegui.exe as usual, to create the ISO. I create a new VM, boot up with the fresh ISO, it starts the formatting and copying files, entering GUI mode, this error dialog shows: and it reboots. This continues on and on. My point was that the small app is an easy way for anyone who wants to do it quick and easy, instead of creating and writing files like you just did... Obviously there's more than one way to figure out what versions are installed on a system..

I did some searching and found a nice little tool you can use to find out what versions of .NET Framework you have installed, just in case they aren't visible in the Add/Remove section. I did some searching trying to figure out the chronological order of the hotfixes, but I came up short. Guess my search terms weren't good enough? "Hotfix chronological install" and "Hotfix install order" simply returned a bundle of non-related threads..too bad, I was hoping I didn't have to sit through it all and do it manually myself. And then there's the almighty .NET Framework implementation. I found the "Silent .NET Maker" thread, but that was a headache from start to finish, I didn't understand that stuff. Too much info for anyone less than tech wizards to understand Sp0iLedBrAt; Yeah I figured as much, I just picked some random hotfixes from the folder, just to get my point across, seeing as it happened to -every single hotfix- I added on a previous attempt. I didn't want to sit through 200 error dialog boxes now. ;P

Ok, gotcha! Anyway, I tried what you said and added the hotfixes, doing the entire nLite-process inside one of the virtual machines running XP, and it worked like a charm, so thank you very much for your help in this matter. I learn something new every day! :-) ricktendo64; thanks for the article!

The part where you say don't integrate a service pack, I interpret that as you saying "Don't slipstream Service Pack 3, and you'll be able to install the Hotfixes using nLite". Am I reading you correctly?

SP3 is slipstreamed fine, that's not the problem... I made an iso of the above demonstrated package, and it installs just fine with SP3 integrated. The problem is about the hotfixes, and so far out of the ~200 update files I have, about 5% of them could be added using nLite. Same thing happens if I try to use the SVCPACK.INF method, apparently the updates doesn't install. This brings me to the question; Do I need to apply every update in any specific order? If so, is there a guide/list showing the order of install?

I didn't know about the Last Session.ini approach so I deleted the first work folder. I had to recreate the scenario from earlier. 1: Extract SP2 iso to a work folder 2: Start nLite and browse to the work folder 3: Choose Service Pack and install SP3 4: Add a list of a few hotfixes (for demonstration purposes) After applying SP3, I get to choose the hotfixes to add, I took just a few now: WindowsXP-KB892130-ENU-x86 ... pass WindowsXP-KB873339-x86-ENU ... fail WindowsXP-KB888302-x86-ENU ... fail Last Session.ini

I made the iso's from my original XP disc so I don't ever have to touch it, and I have an MSDN account.. Anyway, I installed XP SP2 and went into Windows Update and wrote down every single update available for download, and I have them all in a local folder. Not one single of those hotfixes am I able to apply using nLite. 1) I have the untouched SP2 iso, which I unpack to a work folder 2) I start nLite, browse to the work folder. 3) The only thing I do in nLite, is the "apply hotfixes" step. Actually, there was one update which passed in nLite, and that was the WGA update. :-)

I clearly need to be a tech wizard to understand this stuff.. I have problems reading through the OP and understanding what it is exactly that I need to do, to get all the .NET packages slipstreamed/integrated into the unattended XP disc. This guide isn't meant for those of us with "intermediate" knowledge of this stuff.. I have no clue how to make this work for me

The problem I encounter happens regardless of it being an "untouched" SP2 iso, SP2 iso with slipstreamed SP3 (using nLite), or an "untouched" SP3 iso. I have all of those on my local PC. I am trying to add hotfixes that I have manually downloaded from Microsoft. Critical updates, Genuine Advantage and Optional updates. However, in nLite I get the error message saying it couldn't be added! Am I doing something wrong in the process of adding the files? Do they need to be added in a specific order, since perhaps some updates aren't visible on Windows Update before certain updates have been installed? I don't see any solution to this problem, other than installing them after I have installed XP and logged on..

This might be a redundant post, you are most likely already aware of the situation, but whatever. It looks like the MSFN Unattended Guide has issues. I guess it is related to the updating of the forums? The header information is apparently missing, and mysql has some problems. Also, the images are missing. Anyway, I hope it'll get fixed soon!

As for now, everything seems to be working for me, except the screen resolution. It doesn't change from 800x600 no matter what I choose. I have to manually set it when I logon. Since winnt.sif has the option of entering X and Y resolution, I assume it should work. Currently I'm in the process of downloading all the hotfixes to implement them in the iso, along with my list of custom apps. I'm going to take a good look at the RunOnce and the other stuff, because I want to create a well-oiled XP distro Maybe even have it working on a bootable USB thumb drive (which I have yet to accomplish..) I'm also thinking about making an Unattended Windows 7 iso as well, is it just as "simple" as with XP? I got a sneak peak into the W7 UA forum, and it does seem a bit harder..at first glance anyway.

I didn't manually write the entire winnt.sif. At first I used the deployment tools provided by Microsoft and generated the file, which failed miserably. After that, I followed the example file provided at the unattended guide, which got it somewhat working, except I had to manually enter the product key. Then I tried nLite, which made the installation process work all the way up to logon. During nLite configuration I followed each step carefully to avoid any blanks or wrongful configuration. As you say, the OEMPreinstall thing has to be Yes (which it is at this point), but I tried both Yes and No earlier with no difference. The main reason I am using the OEM Dist folders is because of the batch file procedure. The batchfile is made to detect the architecture and install either x64 or x86 apps. I am using it on a USB thumb drive as well to do a "instant auto-install" without any inputs, on any other system. If these methods can be used to achieve the same result, using the other installation procedures, that is something I will have to figure out. I have learned a lot the past day (I started doing this stuff yesterday), so I guess my next step is to try the other installation methods! Up until yesterday I didn't even know about MSFN, but I can see how large the community is, and the quick response and helpful members makes this worthy of my bookmarks I'll be a frequent user here, that's for sure! Yes, I have $1 (and its subfolders) inside $OEM$ - However, for some reason it is working now. I did some minor changes to winnt.sif, which apparently shouldn't be related (Set it to Autopartition=1 etc), but heck.. Also, the 1440x900 resolution does not require any drivers to be installed, as it can be set manually after logon without installing any 3rd party driver.

I've had it both as Yes and No, and there's really no difference..

So, I've tried to make an unattended iso for testing purposes in VMWare, until I get it right and can burn a disc with a functioning Unattended XP. After creating 5-6 iso's in slightly different manners, I feel like giving it up. I have read every page and followed the unattended guide, down to the letter, and yet it never works like I want it to! First of all, the $OEM$ Distribution Folders stuff, is it supposed to automatically copy its content onto the harddrive when you logon for the first time? Because that doesn't happen no matter what I try. I have the hierarchy correct (according to the guide), yet it does not get copied to begin the installation. Am I missing a vital step here? Also, in WINNT.SIF I have set it to have a resolution of 1440 by 900, but that never happens either, the resolution on logon is 800 by 600. So that has to be manually set. There are a couple of other minor annoyances, but those aren't as vital as getting the installation of applications up and running. I could of course try the other methods mentioned, but this one seemed relatively easy since it utilizes batch scripting, which I am quite familiar with. I made a rather advanced batchfile for this purpose too.. what a waste By the way. The OS is Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 integrated. Could THIS be the reason it's not working? I can't understand why, but if it is, I would love to know.. Another thing; Prior to generating the setup using nLite, all the unattended installs failed somewhat (I had to input the product key manually). I also used the nLite setup to slim down the content of the iso.
