  1. Actually, the problem still persists (most often after I install or remove an application as far as I can judge). The number of folders is not what is the issue here. A hidden correlation, or whatever.
  2. I prefer Linux/Unixes, but some applications only run on Windows and that's the reason for using it (of course:).
  3. That makes the problem even weirder as the folder opened upon reboot where I usually notice the reset in view settings is the 'My Computer' folder; the root directory. This is probably one of the first folders windows remembers its settings. I am going to reinstall Windows xp again within a few weeks with some new settings in nLite, and will run the tweak from Kelly's corner also. Thanks for your help. Other link I found, it seems that Win7 has similar issues, and as long as Windows has a registry I wouldn't speak of intelligent design anyway. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711
  4. Thanks for your answer. No, I don't see either why the idiosyncratic reset has anything to do with what I removed with nLite from the installation or other configuration settings. Is the number 400, the amount of folders that has been opened before WindowsXP forgets its view settings? Why would Windows need to keep track of that? That number is reached within a few weeks, 8000 will take a little more time. I will try the registry setting, however after installing Windows and installing the drivers with the inevitable reboot the view is reset and that is well before the magic 400 number is reached. I hope Win7 is more intelligently designed.
  5. Ok, sorry. You're right. LAST SESSION.INI
  6. I have my window view under 'Details' (Folder Options -> Apply to all folders), so it should stick forever. However when I install someting or remove it (Add or Remove Programs), upon a reboot my view is reset to 'Tiles' again. I see no connection between the reset to Tiles-View and adding or removing software. Although in former slimmed XP installations this problem didn't occur, it has happened in other installations as well, each preconfigured with nLite. So I wonder what I could possibly have removed that makes Windows behave like that, although it shouldn't in the first place. Any ideas?
  7. hi, I have a slimmed xp version and all works well. One of the things I removed were the 16-bit references, as all software I have used over the past years is 32-bit. Until recently since I want to run an application that pops up with the error "xxx not a valid win32 application." After some work on this I have come to the conclusion that it still has 16-bit references One of the files that contains old 16-bit settings is the Windows\system directory. Since there have to be references in the registry as well (because designed by Microsoft) placing this directory back in my current installation does not solve the problem. I need to find the references in the registry for the files in this directory. Is there a way to extract this information from my 'testing windows xp'? I don't suppose nlite removes this information from the registry, since it is created on installation (if I'm not mistaken). If nlite does, than is there a way to find out what it exactly removes. Likewise you could ask what files are removed under selection of 16-bit (in this case), or is this information only known by the creator of nlite? Any suggestions appreciated. Kristian Edit: Something new: when I manually remove (underscore) the Windows\system directory and a few other files in the system32 directory that are 16-bit related and reboot, the application still works... It seems that only the references in the registry are needed. And it is just the "16-bit" part of nlite that is responsible for this. Removing this from the isofile disables running this application.
  8. Thanks. That was the connection between the other installation I missed. I wasn't aware that the stand by option required the videocard drivers to enable it.
  9. hello, after installing Windows xp(sp2) the Stand By option is greyed out and in the Power Options -> Advanced tab the options "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" is not present... How can this have happened? I don't know what I may have removed in the nlite options or set in the advanced configurations options that may have caused removal of the Stand By function. Any ideas?
