  1. I been told DVD's and CD's wear out after several years. Verbatim and Taiyo-yuden included. Is that so? Are they not immortal? In a closed container, protected from cold and heat and UV and physical damage... How long can the burnt data last without corrupting or becoming inaccessible thus forever lost?
  2. They operate under SVCHOST.exe and are listening on local DCOM port. This is default in a clean Windows 7 ultimate install. Also after security tweaking and hardening they still remain open. What services are responsible for this? Can they be closed down?
  3. System 792 TCP 135 epmap 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Listening N/A RpcEptMapper, RpcSs System 512 TCP 49155 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Listening N/A System 792 TCP 135 epmap :: :: Listening N/A RpcEptMapper, RpcSs System 512 TCP 49155 :: :: Listening N/A Services.exe seems to be producing the open ports: 49135, 49155, etc. What's the deal with this?
  4. OS 4 or OS 5 Is there an app or procedure for such thing or is the MAC embedded permanently to device somehow? Anyone have experience on the subject?
  5. What is needed in Vlite for Group Policy to work? What can break it or disable it altogether? What breaks, limits, or disables 'administrative tools'? Anyone know?
  6. all purpose. Say video encoding/gaming, etc. What would you suggest?
  7. Had performance as priority for this build so storage space is not a big concern. Thinking running: x64 XP or an extremly vlite'd Win 7 (to exploit those 30GB of space on boot drive).... for running maybe a game/office and 1 or 2 main intensive apps. (adobe CS4's or such) And for further storage, there's HDD by usb/sata or adding a second SSD. So you think the main flaw on this build is the available storage space? What would you suggest to improve? What would you change, swap, remove, or upgrade?
  8. Anyone done it? Is this feasible? Is there support for such a thing on Win 7 and intel P55+ boards? Would a box with a raid 0 SSD setup fly? ^^ or how about, WD VelociRaptors 10,000 RPM vs. SSD? Let's hear those thoughts people!

Future upgrades: double ram only. Peripherals: perhaps a blue ray drive or a dvdrw or attached HDD for storage. Was considering a SLC SDD but read/write speeds seem 3x better with the MLC counter part. (also more storage space) What do you think? Any parts that can be upgraded to a better choice? Can it be improved? How do you see the system overall?
  10. Good insight Thank you everyone
  11. Thank you very much. Appreciate the contribution
  12. All I'm looking is for a broad range of opinions that's all... Research but Thank you for the insight
  13. Aside from the old NT icons and themes nostalgia... Why would someone run 98 or one of the old NT's instead of XP+? How about security? performance? anything else? (Not concerned about Legacy gaming) Any real convincing good logical reason to use one of these relics and avoid the newer Windows builds? Or would that be just plain ignorance or such?
  14. I've heard some live under SP2 and refuse to yield... is there any real security of performance gain by sticking with SP2 and refraining from SP3? Which of the two do you like best? And what is your logical (hopefully reinforced) reason to have that preference?
  15. What is yields best performance? Page File disabled or Page File enabled (if so what size is optimal?) I'm sure this has been spoken of before, but as of today's current advances and experiences, what works best in your opinion?
  16. I'm thinking a Linksys or a Cisco branch... Which model is the absolutely least likely to be compromised by WAN attacks, exploits, vulnerabilities, and such? What do you know? What have you heard? Any experiences, comments, thoughts or concerns?
  17. In terms of security and performance... and any other category of significance. In other words, why migrate to Windows 7? Let us hear it! (please no google query URL's or wikipedias) Brainstorm!
  18. How and what does Nlite modify from the contents of a Windows Installation directory in order to remove components, tweak registry, and perform all it's administrative tasks?
  19. Is there are way to perform the preset tasks that the Nlite software does but manually by browsing the Windows setup folder and doing so without any third party application?
  20. Has anyone published a guide with steps/checklists to slim a XP unattended setup with Nlite for tweaking maximum performance virtually possible? Removing unnecessary components, fonts, languages, windows bloatware, etc. Where can this be found? Or does anyone mind brainstorming or sharing their presets?
  21. What do you do to secure your Windows XP OS? Let's brainstorm: *Only crucial system services running (less exploitable processes + performance improvement), *Hardened Hosts files (blacklists), *Uninstalling Telnet/Net meeting/Messenger/WMP/DCOM vulnerabilities, what else?, etc (generic Windows bloatware), *Disabling UPnP, Administrative shares (IPC$,etc), LMHash, Null sessions, epmap (port 135), SMB (port 445), SSDP (port 1900), etc *Disabling DCOM, paging from executives, remote desktop, remote registry, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (NetBT), etc *Secure file deletion (DOD 5222.20-M), *Any server based network hosting capabilities unavailable, *Group Policy Enforcement set in place (based on NSA checklists) *Latest Windows Patches, *Firewall + AV + Peerguardian (ipblock lists) + IDS app, etc *Registry tweaks (which?), *HDD encryption (which?), *User without Admin privileges, *etc etc... What else can you think of? HTTP + SSL + HTTPS + Nothing else. Uber security. See where I'm getting to? What else can you think of?
  22. How good of an idea is it to rely on DD-WRT firmware to handle router security instead of it's manufacture's firmware? How reliable is this firmware? Stable? Robust security? No malicious source code? What are you experiences with iif you have used DD-WRT... any thoughts, comments, or concerns?
  23. The application affiliated with Eset Nod32 "EKRN.exe" listens to local port 30606 (TCP). The Eset Nod32 version in use is 4.0.437.0... downloaded from original site thus no warez, up to date definitions, and running in background. May be ignorance from my part but could this some sort of security risk? What would this AV need to listen to such port? I'm thinking if EKRN.exe is closed down it could interfere w/ AV functionality... but just blocking (firewall-ing) all it's network traffic may hold it under control. What's this all about? Anyone know anything? Any thoughts, comments or concerns?
