Microsoft Upgrades Windows 10 Powers Of Control
Contacting me again a Microsoft spokesperson explained the company now wanted to speak about the issue. In short: Microsoft is taking action. It has decided to release updates “later this year” which will enable users to fully control all background telemetry and data tracking and, if desired, disable it completely. Microsoft also asked me to stress that disabling these background operations is something it would “strongly recommend against”.

pcalvert and dencorso -- I'd like to read that article about the cost of Win 10, but Forbes blocks me since I'm not a subscriber. Is it available anywhere else? Thanks.
glnz, are you using an ad blocker? Forbes.com recently tweaked their website to block users who are using ad blockers.
I'm using Ghostery on Pale Moon and can visit the site by unblocking just a few ad servers: DoubleClick, LiftDNA, Media.net. I have all the others blocked, and can get in no problem even though I'm not a subscriber. You may want to play around with various combinations of blocked and unblocked servers.

I'm using too but with uBlock Origin and i didn't have access to site until i installed

Some good info
Like many of you, I am concerned about the telemetry, spying and other surveillance features, known or unknown, of Windows 10. It has concerned me enough to push me to Linux Mint as my main operating system. Even so, I wanted to better understand Windows 10, but internet search results for a decent windows 10 traffic analysis leave a lot to be desired. As such, I decided to do my own investigating on what, exactly, Windows 10 is doing traffic-wise, and post the results. For this analysis, I wanted to simply analyse the network traffic of Windows 10 on a clean install, and just let it sit and run without using it.Windows 10 telemetry network traffic analysis, part 1

Do people still trust the "normal" settings provided by the very same company that's trying to push Windows 10 on us?
The answer is, of course, to TAKE CONTROL of what you're allowing to run on your system. It's not magic.
-Noel
And to be sure it stays that way...
Out of curiosity, if you have a Windows 7 or 8 system you're trying to protect from being updated to Windows 10, what do you have in this file?I don't have it. Turned off update on time.

I hate to admit it I am enjoying my Linux system there seems to be a solution to every problem, however, I still enjoy my Windows 7 system. If you think it you can make it happen in Linux! (not always an ideal soulution)Does anyone have any solution what to run then Windows 10 any more? I feel depressed.
Do you mean: 1) what to do if you're currently running Windows 10; or 2) what to do if you don't want to run Windows 10 ever?
If (1) above, then you can try to get as close as possible to a Windows 7 experience by installing Aero Glass, using a privacy-control tool such as ShutUp10, and installing the Microsoft tool to hide updates. You can get a bit closer to what we currently enjoy by getting Windows 10 Pro, which will give you additional options for controlling the telemetry (privacy), but IIRC it won't give you much in the way of added control over Windows Updates.
If (2) above, then you can stay on Win7 and set up a digital fortress with multiple layers of security such as discussed here, here, here, and here. If and when Win7 becomes untenable for whatever reason (security, technology), then you can consider switching to Linux or another non-Microsoft OS.
My plan is #2.
Hope this helps.

I'll stick with my fortified Win 7 as i have second thoughts about Linux. Especially after reading this:

People spent more than 11 billion hours on Windows 10 in December 2015.
Pure math
11.000.000.000 hours / 200.000.000 instaled WinX = 55 hours / 31 days in December = 1,77 hours (about one hour and 46 min.)
IMHO not something you can brag about other than "Yes we collect even more data than you think"

Looks like they bring it back.
Microsoft reverses course, restores downloads of Windows 10 November Update
Last weekend, Microsoft suddenly pulled its online tool for downloading the latest Windows 10 installation files. Today, the company explained the seemingly minor bug responsible for the decision, and has now made the tool available again.0 -
My hat's off to you, NoelC!

I wouldn't sleep too well if I had a Vista (or later? ) OS.
Just for the record/YI:
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/130578-vista-activation/
http://reboot.pro/topic/7288-you-cannot-leave-for-six-months/
BTW it is entirely possible that the good MS guys have changed their approach to it, stopping issuing periodically (for whatever reason) a reactivation trigger, so the aboev may be not only limited to Vista but also to a period in the past.

Thanks for heads up.
I completely closed Windows 7 on VM (no internet access). OEM activated and "cleaned" with DWS Lite
I will report back in may '16.

Turn off Windows Updates on your older systems and block your system's attempts to contact the mothership. Watch the press; if you hear of an update that you really, REALLY need, maybe consider re-enabling Windows Updates briefly and installing just that one. Me, I would test any subsequent available update on a virtual machine first.
-Noel
Not even then. I prefer to download standalone update from M$, extract cab and install it with dism.
I have finger thick dust on wusa.exe and i would like to keep it that way.

^^ Yes, that makes sense.
I guess the hope, then, would be that he privately disagrees with the company's direction, and would point it a different way if he were put back at the helm.

If it makes him $$$, why should he?

If it helps. I have installed Windows 8 on VM back in january 2013. Last updated two and half year ago and still activated.

Microsoft Windows veteran Joe Belfiore takes a year leave-of-absence
My first thought was that he wants to create some distance between his cheerleading for Windows 10 and the looming disaster that it represents. OTOH we've probably all heard of radio DJs who go "on vacation" and then never come back on the air. Here's what Mary Jo has to say:
Belfiore had been noticeably missing from a few recent Microsoft events, with evangelist Bryan Roper filling in as "demo lead" for Windows 10, as of late.
Contacts are asking me if there's more to Belfiore's decision to take a break than meets the eye. I've heard some wondering whether Belfiore's absence offers clues about Microsoft's long-term commitment (or lack thereof) to Windows Phones. All I can say is with Microsoft's own executives talking up the company's growing interest in Android, even if it's just a "Plan B" at this point, it does give some of us Windows Phone faithful pause....

Maybe someone at M$ in meantime implement something actually sane in Windows 10.

I've seen the same thing. I disabled WU and sometime, somehow over the last week it re-enabled itself.
In Properties under Recovery tab change to "Take No Action" on first and second failure.

Great, thanks; I think I can handle that. Do you know of any place where I can find the image file for the task pane background or am I going to have to extract it from a Windows 7 beta installation? Could I just collect a copy of shell32 from the beta or might that produce unwanted consequences?
Just extract bitmaps #632 and #633 from beta shell32 and replace same number images in your shell32.
Or...
Google it for "Theme Resource Changer" program, install it.(if you can't find it i will gladly send it to you)
In your customised theme folder make new one and name it "Shell32.dll", place extracted images from shell32.dll to that folder and you are good to go.
You can if you want download my theme from DeviantArt to see how folders should look like.

Microsoft Support Says “Get Windows 10” App Is Malware, Wants $120 to Remove It
First, the Get Windows 10 app. As you probably heard already, Microsoft’s offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade to those running genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 on their PCs. To make the upgrade possible, the company installs an application called “Get Windows 10” on these computers via Windows Update, thus displaying notifications in the system tray to check for compatibility issues and let the user know that a newer OS version is available. What Marvin did in this case was to incorrectly refer to the “Get Windows 10” app as malware and offer the user a subscription to a technical support plan that also provides malware removal services in exchange for $120 per year.
Get that Marvin a cigar.

Note: This is wild guess
If you have 64 bit Win revert in syswow64 too. And check shell32.dll.mui in system32\en-us and syswow64\en-us if they are altered, revert it if they are.
Run ccleaner and check "Window Size/Location Cache"
Restart after all that
I hope that should do it.

Or place your Win7 install.wim to Win 8.1 iso and make new iso.
Tested by myself on VM. Works like charm.

Did you happen to mess with UIFILEs in Shell32.dll?

I'm also curious how many of those 650 billion web pages are mozilla.org or chrome.google.com.
Or a.ads1.msn.com, a-0001.a-msedge.net, *.telemetry.microsoft.com

Just to be sure. I'm not trying to underestimate your work. BTW you've done great work with it. And Thank You for that.
I posted this as addition to your tests because guys test version was Enterprise and according to M$ it suppose to be quiet when all telemetry options are disabled (IIRC)
EDIT: Someone should test LTSB version. That would be interesting to see.
