Thanks for the advice. I have backed up my important files (before I attempt anything). I'll see what I can figure out. --Dave

I recently began noticing the following warning when starting my computer: systemroot\windows\system32\autochk.exe program not found - skipping AUTOCHK I think it may be appeared right about the time when Norton was having a problem. I did add a file to the registry per Symantec's suggestion, but Norton has since been removed from my system. Anyway, does this mean my registry is is corrupted? I am not an expert on tinkering with the "behind the scenes" of my computer. What should I do? Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the help. Since I have only had Norton for a little over 30 days, I contacted Symantec before removing it and was able to request a refund. Removing Norton seemed to do the trick. I no longer have the start up issue and IE does not crash on me. Now, it's back to the drawing board to find a good anti-virus program that will not slow down or mess up my system.

I was having problems with IE crashing and I uninstalled some programs in case it may help with that problem. I don't mind using Firefox but some websites require IE. Norton also alerted me to a couple things that I need to fix. This was in regards to Phishing. I hit the Fix Now button and received an internal program error (see screenshot). With the assistance of someone in chat, I contacted Symantec and they provided me some steps to follow: Symantec's Solution I followed these steps and downloaded the file, which was added to the registry. This may have something to do with my problem, but I don't know. At any rate, I still have the same error message with Norton along with the start up issue I am trying to resolve. Should I do something with Norton first?

After recently defragging my hard drive, I now receive a blank explorer window at start up with the pathway C:\Program Files\Common displayed. I searched online and found couple responses about this: Run Program Solution Regedit Solution I don't want to mess up the computer further but wanted to ask if anyone has had this issue before? The first solution sounds the easiest. I also have TweakUI on my computer. Perhaps I can use that tool? Any advice? Thanks, Dave

Recently, I have been receiving the following message when attempting to open certain Word and Excel files: Windows cannot open this file To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer. What do you want to do? - Use the Web service to find the appropriate program - Select the program from a list" This occurred on a few files saved to my desktop, which I have now reassociated with the correct program. But this also happens when I have an attachment. Usually, I have the option to Open (from current location) or Save. The only option, other than Cancel, that I have is Save. What is the reason for this and how do I correct it? Could this be related to Adware? What about the fact that I am trying a new Virus scanning software (F-Secure) and perhaps I clicked on Deny when I should have clicked on Accept? It may not be a big deal since I can still download the files and open them later, but I would like the option to open them without having to save it first. Please advise. Thanks, Dave

I tried this and got a "The system cannot find the file specified" response. I read somewhere that I might be able to delete this problem folder in Safe Mode. Is this correct? If anyone has other ideas, let me know. If I can't delete, so be it, I guess. I'm a little unsure about doing a system restore. I think I may have done that one time but with someone's assistance. I certainly do not want to mess up my computer just because of one insignificant folder. I want to find the most effecient and safe way to remove this folder. Thanks, David

I downloaded the program and when using it, it tells me that nothing is locking up the directory but that it can still help me deal with it. I selected Delete and OK. I received a message that the folder was deleted with success. However, the directory was still present and when clicking it, I get the same error message as before. What am I doing wrong? Perhaps another program would work better. I don't know.

I was recently using Musicmatch to copy music to my hard drive. The program autoruns and when I hit the "copy" button, it creates its own directory under My Music. On one of the last CDs I copied, I believe I may have removed the CD from the drive before everything was created. Now I received the following message, which I have attached. Basically, it says that the location is unavailable and to check to make sure that the disc is properly inserted. I have already tried restarting the computer and that did not work. All the other directories in this folder work. It is just this one. Is there a way to delete it? When I tried to delete the folder, it would not work. Any suggestions?

I tried this remedy but I could not get step 4 to work. I installed the Debugging Tool and created the directory, and typed the command line as shown, but received this response: WARNING! An '_NT_SYMBOL_PATH' environment variable is not set. Please check the application event log or the ADplus-Report.txt Please keep in mind that I'm not very technical. Maybe I will try reinstalling IE. Otherwise, I can just use Firefox. It seems to be less buggy.

I'm sure a lot of people have seen an error similar to this one: Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. I have searched this and other forums and I have not been able to get a clear answer to my problem. This error seems to only occur when one profile already has IE open and if another profile is opened, that user cannot access IE. However, I the first profile has IE open, the other profile can still open Firefox just fine. The only response I have seen is to remove the Google Toolbar. However, I do not have this at all. The only toolbar I had was the one from Yahoo, which is removed. Has Microsoft addressed this? Will they be issuing a fix in an updated patch (which is what I read online)? Any other comments or suggestions? Thanks, Dave

Let me start by saying I use XP Home and recently installed the Service Pack 2. I also tried a different virus program (AV Force), which I since removed, in case it was causing any issue with my system. Anyway, I will now let everyone know my problem. Recently, I was using a Word Document file which locked up on me and forced me to close it. When attempting to access the file again (to recover it), it tries to do so with a .wbk file. In the past, the recovered documents were .doc files (I think). I have also received the following error message: "Microsoft Word for Windows® 97 application file has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I shut down the computer and tried to access the file again still have the same issue. I tried opening other documents and had no problem. I even accessed the previous version of this file, which is only slightly smaller, and it works fine. What needs to be done? If necessary, I can scrap this file and add to my earlier saved version. I would hate to have to do that, but I would like to try to repair or recover this document. Perhaps it is corrupt in someway. I hope it is not virus related. Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the info. I will see what I can do with some help, of course. If there is any other issue, I will be sure to return. Shades

The message happens when I first log onto to XP. I don't even have to visit a web site to get this message. I am now also getting a message about McAfee Security Center not being compatible with XP. It advises me to uninstall and reinstall it. I tried that, but XP won't let me uninstall McAfee. I guess I should have uninstalled it before loading XP. Do I need to uninstall XP and take care of certain issues and reinstall it? If there is something I can do without having to do that, please let me know. --shades

After upgrading to XP, I have been receiving the following message: "The page you are trying to view has an incorrect address and cannot be displayed. Please try another page." This message appears on the Help and Support Center. Why is this happening and what can be done to correct it? --shades

I recently upgraded from Win98 to XP. During the setup, I was instructed to download the CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack due to an incompatibility issue. Now when I play a DVD, the sound and video is choppy. How is this resolved? Do I need a memory upgrade or new video card? Please advise. --shades
