  1. The place that I bought it from is having me return it, they think the reason for not being able to install vista/7 but can xp is because of the installed system size. This HDD may have a bad sector that XP doesn't reach before completing the install and since vista/7 is larger it hits this bad sector and is why I can't install 7. Still have too many ?'s and things that don't make sense. At least they are replacing the drive and we will see if I still have problems.
  2. Ok put the 40 Gb back in and did a fresh install in like 40 minutes so its not the dvd drive (good). So now to figure out what is goning wrong.
  3. I think I may need to put that other HDD back in and see if it may be my dvd drive has gone bad and that is what is giving me my problems. Thanx for clinching straws with but I think Ive got the shortest one right now.
  4. Oh ya I called MS to see if they would help me and he said he could but it was gonna cost me $139.99
  5. The HDD is a Samsung 160 Gb 5400RPM 8MB 2.5 IDE notebook hard drive and Compaq Presario 900 laptop. As far as the drivers you mentioned I have NO idea about.... I didn't have to do anything different form the past (partition, format, install) and it installed in 1 hr if that helps answer that ?. I've also tried a copy of vista and that just completely froze solid before you get to the install screen. At least 7 reacts. I just don't see any reason for a problem. If it had something to do with the controller I should of had a problem with XP also right? or am I wrong on that.
  6. Sorry I didn't write it down and since I know that it shouldn't take 4 hrs to install, the times that I've tried to install it again after 2 hours I've just stopped the install. I've tried RC1 7100, 7077 and 7068 and they all reacted the same so I've just figure that I've done something wrong until I tried XP.
  7. I'm having problems installing Win7 onto a new 160 Gig HDD, it just doesn't seem to want to install and I've let it run and then after 4 hours got the fatal error screen (blue). (I've used this dvd before on the 40 Gb HDD that I'm replacing and it installed in less than 1 hour). This is my first time using a larger HDD that includes having the OS on it (past 40 Gb) so I don't know if I need to do anything other than set my partition sizes, format and then let the disk do its thing. I was able to install XP on this drive with no problems at all using this method so I don't know why it doesn't seem to want to install 7. Any suggestions???
  8. I'm using 7077 and really like it even more than I thought I would at first since I don't care for Vista. The one complaint that I have is I miss the move to, copy to and the delete options that were on the left side.. I noticed that this topic started out with build 6801 so a few things may have changed since then but for the install time of 14 minutes doesn't seem right. I do understand that my pc is 1.4Ghz w/1Gig Ram but it took a lot longer then that to install I didn't time it but when I install XP its pretty close to the time it says.
  9. Don't think so wasn't having problems before and not since I finally got it to install.
  10. I was running 7068 and seemed to be running just fine then just wouldn't do anything so tried to reinstall and then had the hardest time getting it take. Before this happened it did run the start-up repair a couple of times and the only other thing I noticed was that it was telling me that my windows was invalid and wanting me to fix this online but never did. Anyway when I was trying to reinstall it would say something about bootmgr missing or say no OS found. If it did find the disk it would get part way thru then say it stopped because it was missing some file. When I used my XP disk it saw the cd first but not always with 7. I had 1 of 7057 and 2 of 7068 and none of them work so I DLed 7077 1st burn nothing but the same 2nd burn I used a DVDRW on 1x and got it install from there. Was just wondering if there is any way to install or force it to use the DVD or install the bootmgr.exe to make it use the disk first. THANX IN ADVANCE FOR ANY AND ALL HELP TJ
  11. Ok on my first try all the more I did was alter XPs install, well I didn't put a workgroup name in it so I had enter that other then that it installed al by itself. There are some things I don't like about how it ended up but I can keep trying to til its gets there then start to work on how to add the apps that I want installed automatically. Is there a detailed list of what it is and does about the things that can be selected? Things I selected not to install were Fast User Switching Media Center (still installed win media player)? Remote Desktop (still installed something to with with remote ?(didn't catch what it was))? Tablet PC Also no theme installed Couple of things in question with are camera & camcorders (I do have one but can remove card just as easy), anything from IIS, does NT backup/vol shadow copy mess with system restore, anything in prefetch function and printers. Now I do have my printer to do want to install but don't need any of the network sharing type stuff. After all is said and done I'm happy that it was successful my first try and with a little more understanding each option I should be able to get close to what I want (oh ya I cut the disk down 402 mb)
  12. Thanx again so very much for your time and help with getting me started with this. I will give you a break and get some rest cuz I'll be back with more questions after I give this a try. Thanx again and have a good night TJ.
  13. Will I be able to add/remove things from this at a later time or will I have to go thru this process again for the next project? I know the best answer to this question but if it causes any problems if you do.... Do I do this as the only thing running (like burning DVDs) or can I have a few things going at the same time ( I have some downloads that I'm trying to complete). Thanx again for all your help. TJ
  14. Let me ask this with using nlite I can remove some of the programs that aren't really needed or used and by doing that it will decrease the amount of time it takes for XP to install overall (which is one of my interests). This would be a start at seeing what the words in my head and an actual project coming to life. Also would I be able to add the programs to that saved project as I digg deeper into how this all works.
  15. Good morning John, my name is TJ and thanx for all the help you've been. I took a look at that tutorial that you posted and WOW OVERLOAD (only cuz just starting w/this but its all part of it that has to be learned). It seems to be a lot to do for a first attempt at this, but it looks like there is a link to every file that is needed. I know the only way to conquer this beast is to just dive in so let me ask you this, I get a quicker grip on how things work when someone is there to walk me thru each step. So with that said what is the simplest and quickest thing that can basically hold my hand thru each step and create something that works. Things will make more sense once I see just the basic steps taken. To be honest I'm overhelmed with it all right now so the simplest thing you can suggest that you know will work would be a great help. THANX TJ.
