They have kits that already have the pins soldered onto the board. One board I know of is by SchmartBoard - they sell an RS232-TTL converter board that can be used, hooked up via serial cable. In US, I know it's sold at Fry's and Frys.com. And you just need to pick up jumper cables to connect everything, and soldering is not required at all.
