  1. New firmware just released for the following drives (1.5 TB included!): ST31500341AS ST31000333AS ST3640323AS ST3640623AS ST3320613AS ST3320813AS ST3160813AS http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207957

  3. Do you know these guys? It's not unknown for hackers to post "free" Apps in order to hack your PC. The forums look pretty empty to me...
  4. I'd think that HDD Tune can't read this info from the disk drive directly. I think what it does is read the DRive model number and lookup in a local database the other drive charactertistics and display them to the user. Thus HDD Tune needs to have it's database updated with the newer drive info by the developers of HDD Tune. This includes info such as ATA/ATAPI-????? and the UDMA info. So in the case of my ST31000333AS having 32mb of cache, HDD tune would modify the DBMS to say lookup the drive model and display that 32mb info to the user. Isn't that issue what this article describes? http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/d...wnloads/cuda-fw

If he is who he says he is it doesn't sound like we'll be getting a firmware this week to unbrick the drives that were rendered inoperable by the SD1A update. Supposedly they are being extra cautious with the next release and it may be next week before we see it. That's fine by me, but I would REALLY at least like SD15 to be made available so I can flash back to a working firmware to get the one drive back online that AD14 won't work with. Good spot KLA1973! Here is the specific comment: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1098793&cid=26542735 It's the first very sensible explanation I have seen and it looks very real. If this is real and true I extend my congratulations to maxtorman for speaking up and for having the balls to post that. I hope he doesn't get into trouble as he is the only one who has faced us directly and given as a reasonable explanation. He also not treating us like stupid people that cannot understand technical issues. It's very sad that Seagate as a company can not take the same avenue and be direct and clear with us on what's going on here. I also suggest you read his other comments in Slashdot as they are very informative: http://slashdot.org/~maxtorman
  6. Seagate has now "silently" updated the KB 207931: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207931 "...manufactured through December 2008." instead of "...manufactured in December 2008." We knew that already!

  8. Users of the 500 GB drive be aware of possible RAID issues after the new FW update: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...message.id=5654
  9. They have anounced a new firmware for the 1.5 TB as well, but it hasn't been released yet. See http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207957
  10. CST is Central Standard Time, which is GMT -0600. So that means the new ISO file was updated at 9:15PM GMT (UTC).
  11. Check this thread: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...e.id=5328#M5328 People had success using the earlier EXE and the new FW to update their drives.
  12. It's in a hidden part, but if you try booting with it you will get the FW update program loaded automatically. Give it a try and you will see. Don't expect the FW update to work though as no one has been able to update their drives so far.
  13. Good you got it "working", well more like booting, not working really. I wish I could have the Engineer that coded that FW in front of me, I will tell him a few things about QA and customer service! Hundreds of users have tried already and they are just wasting our time, it seriously looks like a joke, a very bad joke.
  14. It sounds like you have some FreeDOS issues. Try booting with the same CD in another PC or a laptop. If it doesn't work try burning the CD a lower speeds. If it works then your PC might not be able to boot with FreeDOS. Try changing some BIOS setting, like disabling all periphetrals etc.
  15. Check this post: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...e.id=5287#M5287 Basically everyone is trying to apply the FW to the 1 TB drives and it's failing. How dumb are these guys? They can't even check that the FW works before releasing it? Seagate sucks!!!
  16. BTW, there is a 2 TB WD drive coming out soon! http://en.expreview.com/2009/01/13/western...-this-week.html So everyone should sell their 1 TB/1.5 TB Seagates in eBay and buy WDs. I know I will, even with a firmware fix I can't sleep quietly knowing that the drive might die anytime. And when it does I won't be able to contact Seagate as they will be a line of customers with the same problem...
  17. It's getting traction. 3 very popular sites I know they recently covered the story: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3...7200-11-failing http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/seagate-7200...l#xtor=RSS-1415 http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...ticleId=9126280 And I think they will be more very soon, hopefully a mass media site will cover it and Seagate will have to stop treating us like nothing is going on!
  18. That will require Seagate being honest and come clean on these issues, which is unlikely to happen. They don't seem to care about their customers and I don't think that's going to change.
  19. I doubt it's even "until" December. Think about it, if it was "until December" it would certainly mean they have discovered the FW fault and they have fixed it, hence they started to fit new drives with the new FW. As there is no new FW I can imply they haven't fixed it yet. They probably said December because that's probably the latest batch of drives available in retail stores, but I bet all the ones they got in the factories are also going to have to get the new FW too.
  20. I am not sure where you got that "big time" idea. All I see it's a company trying to hide the issue and not informing their customers exactly what's going. The Online Checker Tool has been removed from the original KB article: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207931 although you can still access it directly if you know the URL. I presume this is because the tool was complete rubbish and a lot of people reported that they bricked drives were shown as "not affected". I think Seagate doesn't even know how big this problem is, if only they read their own forums or asked their users they would see that the KB article is a bunch of lies, there are many more drives affected than they are saying!
  21. Just got this from the forum moderator at Seagate: Hi: Thanks for your participation on the forums so far. I have edited your message so as to remove the off-topic content. Off-topic content includes the following: advertisements for other companies, advertisements for TV shows, complaints that contain no helpful/actionable content, whining, links to off-site pages that contain no actionable content, etc. In your case, your post contained no helpful or actionable content. We are glad you're posting on the forum. Just please restrict your comments to on-topic content, which is either a question detailing the situation and requesting help, a question asking another user for more information, or an answer to a question with something helpful for the other user, and thus comply with the rules and guidelines to which you agreed when you registered. Thanks! Best Regards, AlanM Moderator God these guys got no brains at all. Hundreds of customers are really p***ed off and all they can think off it's stupid and non-sense forums rules? Seagate needs to burn in hell for all they are doing!
  22. I think it's pretty clear that Seagate doesn't know the full extend of the problem or don't want to go public with it. The KB page says that the defective drives were manufactured in Dec 2008 but clearly there are lots of people who had their ST31500341AS failing as early as Oct 2008.
  23. Seagate does not allow users to download firmware updates becuase they could mess it up? LIARS!!! Look at this link: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca...000dd04090aRCRD
  24. Covered in Computerworld now: http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...ticleId=9126280 And link to the online serial tool checker: http://support.seagate.com/sncheck.html Mine are Model: ST31500341AS P/N: 9JU138 - 300 Firmware: SD17 and it says they are not affected. I think this refers to the 0GB / gone from the BIOS bug, not the freezeing on RAID configurations which I guess is fixed by the previous firmware update (SD1A).
  25. For those wanting to scream at someone I suggest you go to the Contact Us page in Seagate.com (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/about/contact_us/) and click on Media. There are a couple of people you could email: COMMUNITY RELATIONS elena.sexton@seagate.com ian.o'leary@seagate.com lotus.tan@seagate.com Consumer Solutions Division / Seagate and Maxtor Retail / Storage Solutions nathan.papadopulos@seagate.com siobhan.m.lyons@seagate.com Desktop and Notebook Storage michael.hall@seagate.com I already emailed all them. Make them hear your pain, let's make their mail inboxes get full with our complaints. If they don't want to hear about it so be it. One email per drive dead should be a reasonable punishment!!!
