I've got an email from seagate disksupport with a link to kb article and firmware - took them one week to respond. Will wait a week or two before applying the fw. Maybe there will be another release. So there is some firmware on the site... but my hdd is still working fine. I'm afraid of updating it Are there any reports of newer firmware that might be released soon?

You were really close If you go one step further and extract the boot sector from the iso (no help from winrar here), you will get 1.42mb *.bif file that contains freedos and seagate firmware.

@Toppits Yes all uppercase. I also talked to two guys at seagate chat support. One sad that it is affected for sure.. And it's better keep it on 24/7 until update is released. Second one said that it's NOT affected and it's completely safe to turn it on/off. But i asked the second guy if he could add my email to a subscription and he did that. He told me that as soon as firmware is available i will be emailed with a link. They don't know themselves what's going on... I will go later this week and buy 1TB WD to clone my data and forget about the mess.

Yeah, something like this I tend to globalize things.. It's not practical sometimes but hdd failure database could be a great. There is a nice program, called hdd sentinel. And they are running beta of something simmilar: http://www.hdsentinel.com/storageinfo.php?lang=en Let's see what seagate has to say. The had built a very good reputation over the years and i don't want to have 5 equally s***ty manufacturers when it concerns data storage.

Purely for 7200.11 failing issue that will probably suffice.

Generally HDD will either fail early on (e.g. the first week) or will not fail for a long time. In case of failing after couple of months it can be because of two reasons: 1) Poor system setup (PSU\cooling) 2) Manufacturing problems (build quality, firmware, etc) So i wouldn't through out psu factor, especially if it's not hard to mention alongside with os type.

Most of the drives from the same box and ones that arrived a bit later are fine BUT there are problems now with the newest 500gb seagates. ~a month ago most of the new 500gb's started failing. I have to mention that to run hdd properly you need a good PSU so maybe adding PSU type and number of drives\graphics card is relevant. e.g. ENERMAX 500W @ 8800GT 3HDDs = FINE ColorsIt 500W @ 8800GT 1 HDD = FAIL
