  1. Great! Thanks for your data And dunno what's gonna replace my seagates.. but first I'm going to have a beer!
  2. Speedfan diagnostics of my current 7200.11 drives: Refurb drive:
  3. I also have 2 Chinese 500GB drives up and running right now, including a refurbished replacement drive (resp. from the 6QM and 5QM series). Power on hours have been respectively 217 and 77 and I'm keeping a close eye on both these puppies.. BTW all my drives are OEM. If the SiteCode is WUXISG then the disk is made in China. and yes, according to the list the China ones are failing too but apparently (according to the list again...) a lot less than the Thailand ones (KRATSG ones). Saludos, ToKuRo. Thank you for the quick response, ToKuRo. I have a site code of SUZHSG and I will definately post back with the results when I start using it.
  4. Sounds cool to me. And when things are finally wrapped up post the solution tutorial in a new thread so people won't have to filter through 14+ pages of posts. No, I don't think it's become an afterthought, it just requires some "behind the scenes" work that would cause the thread to become a bit obscure, especially to search engines. So the more updates we have on failed drives, the better this thread it will appear in Google and other search engines. So maybe what would be better thing to do, since this thread has a pretty good view count and listing in Google, is to start a thread dedicated towards writing the code for fixing it as both fatlip and pichi seem to be making strides in that area, and then relevant updates and links could be posted here. What does everyone think of that?
  5. Looks like a link to a (selfbuilt?) utility which allows you to communicate with your crapped out drive via the com port and the 3.3V RS232 adapter. followed by some instructions? Uh, cool. How do I use it, and what does it do?
  6. Yeah, but I'm afraid I'm the impatient type XD Comments from seagate moderators stating that this particular problem with 7200.11 drives is restricted to some isolated cases and nowhere near statistically significant have been bugging me too much.
  7. Hmm.. now if only we could add the data of all the similar cases listed on Newegg.com. That would guarantee a couple of hundred additional entries at the least
  8. Hmm, i think i'm getting a bit delirious. No more random google searches for me today http://hardmaster.info/eng/articles/20-11-2008.html
  9. And so the list steadily grows. Wish we had some contacts at the repair/RMA departments of various major webshops/electronics vendors to see if we could gather enough cases to make the problem statistically significant. But i guess we would need about 10000 drives before it would even get noticed..
  10. Yeah they practically delete everything these days, while posting a few bogus problem topics a day to push our original posts further down the pages. It's about as sad as it can get XD
  11. Interesting post on the official Seagate forum some time ago by Vegetarian (from overclockers.co.uk): I bought 2 of these drives (500gb) some months appart. First one in Dec 07 and second May 08, there was no problems with the 7200.11 on the net. October I get reboot of death on the 2nd drive - PC is fine one moment then it reboots and the 7200.11 is not seen in bios. I did try transplanting the circult board from my good seagate but no good. Replaced second drive failed 6 weeks later in same way. PC shop started to tell me theres nothing wrong with seagates and it must be something wrong with my PC. I also noticed that the 2nd drive caused static sound thru my Speakers. It was replaced and this drive had static too. the new drive failed again on Chrismas day... Same old not recognised in BIOS. Could this problem/weakness with the 7200.11's be caused by a windows update in october as there were no reports of this reboot of death till about this time? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRevie...s%29&Page=4 http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17937547 Message Edited by vegetarian on 01-07-2009 09:09 AM
  12. Hmm.. the first 9QJ.. Thanks for the data! * When you enter your code (08496) in the date code calculator (Posted by icefloe01) I just found this: Seagate date code calculator. You have to create a login to get it. Once you extract the files from the zip file, you have to drill down to this point: SeagateDateCode\SeagateDateCode\SeagateDateCode\bin\Debug to find the executeable. Nevermind, I just did a megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/nl/?d=HS5ZEL4O You get the date: 12/Jun/2008.*
  13. In my case I was using about 8% of the total available 465GB (only OS files).
  14. Mkay.. the official Seagate forum is suffering from some pretty heavy moderation right now; my most recent inventations for people to come over to this forum have been deleted in a mere couple of minutes time
  15. Hi Nichev, could you please add your data to the following list?: SerialNumber:Model:P/N:Firmware:DateCode:SiteCode:PurchaseDate:FailedDate:USername =========================================================== 9QM7VZBP:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:09146 (09/Oct/2008):KRATSG:Oct2008:24Dec2008:poolcarpet 9QM6X90B:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:09115 (17/Sep/2008):KRATSG:Oct2008:28Dec2008:DaftMule 9QM6W2JE:ST3500320AS: - :SD15: - : - :5Dec2008:19Dec2008:DerSnoezie 9QM4G4PK:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:08503 (16/Jun/2008):KRATSG:Aug2008:Nov2008:dskbrk 9QM3RWHJ:ST3500320AS:9BX154-568:SD81:08464 (20/May/2008):KRATSG:Aug2008:23Dec2008:ToKuRo 9QM7KSQJ:ST3500320AS:9BX154-501:SD15:09134 (30/Sep/2008):KRATSG:28Oct2008:07Jan2009:jeroen__online 9QM2MFS6:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:08406 (10/Apr/2008):KRATSG:12Apr2008:23Dec2008:quattro150
  16. Hey poolcarpet, I've just noticed that your most recent posts on the official seagate forum (asking other people with similar problems to come over to this forum) have been deleted.. I guess your initiative for gathering as many data as possible on the failures has struck a sensitive chord
  17. Asus p5Q pro over here, for other specs see link: http://forum.bouweenpc.nl/topic/6480
