I'm sorry but according to the law having backups is not illegal. I do have a legit copy of Windows XP that originally came with my desktop. I switched my desktop to Linux, and wanted to put that copy of windows onto my laptop. The disk broke and the company would not replace it. If it was illegal i would not be able to activate it and have a proper instillation of it, correct? If i do have a legit copy i would have a valid key, in which case i do. Thanks

Windows XP, Home Service Pack 3, OEM. I do have a legit copy of Windows XP Home, but the copy i used was one i downloaded because it had SP3 already integrated. I would try using the SP1 disk, but its cracked and no-longer works. If there's one you suggest i find please let me know. I also installed vista on the laptop temporarily if i should compile it on that. When i put the downloaded disk image into the laptop, it gets to the screen that tells me there are no hard drives in the computer, meaning it gets passed that part of the installation. Would you know where i could get the Windows XP drivers for my chip set? [edit] Another thing that might make a difference. Would it make a difference if i was doing this on my desktop and not the target laptop? I'm doing this because Linux is currently on my laptop and I'm switching over. The laptop did come with vista, so it is possible for me to switch over to that OS for a while if necessary. I just thought it would be more convenient if i was to only do 1 fresh install.

Do you have to select to have them removed? That was one of the options that i didn't think i changed.All i added was the SATA drivers, then in the area where it asked for other drivers i checked them all, so i should have the chipsed driver (its intel by the way) I have left it on automatic, which is quite strange that it would be asking me this. Hello, Ive been searching these forums as well as different sites searched on from Google and i was unable to find the answer to my problem. My laptop is an Asus F3SV (more details later on) and i knew that in order to install Windows XP Home i needed an application to add the drivers for the SATA hard drive. I loaded the image and went through all the items, downloaded the appropriate drivers, then compiled and burnt it to a DVD. As well as creating the DVD i made an ISO as well and tested it in Virtual Box (i did make sure to set the hard drive to a SATA type). When placed in my laptop everything goes as normal until i come to this screen (its as if i hit F5): --Start-- Setup could not determine the type of computer you have, or you have chosen to manually specify the computer type. Select the computer type from the following list, or select "Other" if you have a device support disk provided by your manufacture. To scroll through the menu items press up arrow or down arrow: *ACPI Uniprocessor PC *Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (APCI PC) *MPS Uniprocessor PC *Standard PC *Standard PC with C-Step i486 *Other --End-- The first 5 options, when selected go to the screen that says "Starting Windows..." and then hangs and nothing happens (left it for a few hours) When i chose "Other" i get an error that says "The file txtsetup.oem could not be found." When i went and looked inside the SATA drive folder there was a txtsetup.oem file so something is wrong there.
