  1. Example 1 for username: john smith to reset password to your choice type following from run or cmd prompt (If I use a new line this means press enter key). net user "john smith" * Enter password now (prob shows up in ********) Confirm Password now (again will appear hidden in ********) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Example 2 for username: John & Joe to reset password type net user "john && joe" * Enter password now (prob shows up in ********) Confirm Password now (again will appear hidden in ********) If above example 2 fails try the following but I have always used the double and && net user "john ^& joe" * Enter password now (prob shows up in ********) Confirm Password now (again will appear hidden in ********) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can I just ask why this is a problem for you?
  2. I agree with what has been said on lots of things here. i.e. Never compress c:\ drive and it does slow things with indexing but you can turn this off but leading to longer search times. Catch 22! NTFS format also causes problems when trying to repair a compressed drive. Basically any NT based OS can't repair compressed drives. Actually they can in theory but very hit and miss and I have only ever had one sucess. I do have some external USB 500GB's compressed but would hate them to fail. I got another backup though! I suppose archives are not too bad thats what I use it for too.
  3. I heared something about this before and do not quote me but what ever idea tried nothing worked appart from running safe mode and paintDesktopVersion then nlite from there. I dabbled in nlite before but in the end I was running into multiple boot DVD's not CD's to get my system the way I wanted it. Was quicker to restore from backup disks using partition magic backup. Not good for setting up multiple PC's tho!
  4. I have been thinking about the portable and I do quite often clear my personal data and temp files/cookies/passwords etc just for smoother running of both internet and my PC so this would not work. I got into the habbit of atleast clearing temp once per day at end of night.
  5. Cheers for speedy reply. I do have firefox portable on there but never thought about staying logged in. Would I not time out or expire though? Anyway I would only need one set of cache as each user would have own version of firefox on their own USB's. Thanks again I will have a look into this more. I know that some of the kids use IE instead of firefox though.
  6. Hi, At the moment I have quite a few items in my startup which appear near my clock. Sometimes these are useful but other times they really drag on my already low resources as my PC aint too fast to say the least. Most of the time when my system starts I end up right clicking most of them and closing the apps. But sometimes I want them to run. This closing of them is very time consuming but necesarry if I need to do things that require a bit more gogo juice. Such as photo and video Editing. I know that I can get into the system configuration editor by typing msconfig into run and that I can selective start up each device. Also from here I can see the startup directories and startup command lines for all the apps I right click and close. Which drops in useful to help me find what commands need to stopped and started or run or terminated. What I want to do is have 2 batch files on my desktop. Batch1 todo the same job that I manually do when I right click and close those hungry apps. I could call this performance.bat Batch2 todo the same job as the startup already does and litterally start them back up again. I could call this restartup.bat or nonperformance.bat This way I would have a lot more control. I could easily disable these apps in sysconfig utility and just run batch2 if I wanted them to run. Otherwise I can leave my system as it is but have the flexability to auto shutdown and restart at the click of a batch file. Giving me a performance mode PC or a more useful but slower system. With a bit of fiddling I probably could work our how to do batch2 and get them up and running again but I would not have a clue how to write a batch file to close apps down. A little jogging of the memory with commands and syntax would also be great if there are any batch writing pros out there. Also my daughter has just got a new laptop but only 1GB RAM running Vista and things like the sidebar and lots more are slowing it right down. I would liek to write these 2 batch files for her too. Thanks to any contributions Matt
  7. Hi Not sure if posted in right area but can't find better topic. I have been wanting to know how to do this for ages and know it can be done just not sure how to do it. Basically I have a security encrypted USB storage device (sandisk cruzer) that needs password authentication to get to my stuff. We all use the same PC, and login on XP for quickness and we share websites such as MSN, Yahoo, Gmail etc etc in our house hold. If I come to login to my email quickly my partner or kids are still logged in so I have to sign them out and me in then me out and them in when Im done. We do not need too much security in our house and individual user accounts in xp would defeat the speed issue even with switch user enabled. What I want to do is create a shortcut on my USB so nobody can access it without my password. Then in the shortcut paths I want to add a command line that will log me in automatically. Ie for my Yahoo email the shortcut path would be along the lines of http://www.yahoo.co.uk/mail login:mafa password:whatever_my_password. I understand that the actual URL's are much longer and wierd with loads of server numbers etc etc. I know it used to be possible and I have copied the very complicated URL when I log into Yahoo into a shortcut path. I get prompted to verify everytime and if I sign out completely and clear my temp files I get the full login screen. Quicker than signing someone out but I want to be very lazy adn have it sign me all the way in. I would like to setup individual user logins for multiple web pages and store on the individuals user USB pen. So I plug mine in and autoplay kicks in then I access my shortcuts and bam im logged in. Is it possible with todays complicated web verification and security? Thank guys and girls in advance Matt
