  1. IT GURU, im sorry but what a load of crap! That sounds like typical Apple fanboy talk NO OFFENCE but this guy has HORRIBLE speed RAM and it's NOT a good thing with Vista, if you really ARE a guru YOU SHOULD KNOW this: If it's possible to make a computer faster just by changing a few settings, even if it's not definate, by GOD people are going to fiddle and tweak!

First things first, the Single Channel mode is definately cause for concern. I think the mainboard in the Acer was the problem. 5.9 is good =) i don't have Vista, I run 2008, and am still in the process of crossing WinSAT to 2008 so can't give a score of my uber beast for you to compare to sorry :( but I can do this.... and also, in a reply to all the Intel fanboys...

  2. If anybody wants an alternative, I use a boot manager called XOSL which is about a million times more simple. But of course, a little research is required.

XOSL allows me to boot Server 2008 on my main partition, XP on my THIRD partition, and OSX on my second harddrive =)

I could never get grldr to work the way I wanted it, but this is a good guide! Anywho, for all those interested check it out at http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm it works very well and its 100% free =) Peace

    EDIT:

Is there a way to by-pass the hybernated OS and boot into the Game-OS?

Sorry, there isn't. It's impossible. Somebody once figured out how to do it by editing the MFT to make it NOT boot the hibernated system, but then when they restored the original sctor blocks to "resume" the hibernated OS they always got BSOD's. Bummer. This is something I spent days researching friend, I know it's hard but just get over it and it'll be easier :(

  3. You should be able to do it the same way as in XP or Vista. When you go to Personalize, there is a link on the left that says 'Change Desktop Icons'. Then you can check the box like in XP. Here is a picture of these menus here:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/

This is correct. When you "delete" the recycle bin it's only deleting the shortcut, it clearly states how to get it back to the desktop via Personalization.

You say you moved it to another folder? This is impossible on Server 2008, and I assume for Vista aswell. It only allows you to Creat a Shortcut when you drag the Recycle Bin with the right mouse button.

Am I wrong? Either i've missed something, or you've failed to explain correctly, or your install is seriously corrupt.

I know this is an old thread, but jeez - it'd be nice if the OP [original poster] actually tells us if they did or didn't fix it... I'll try not to revive old threads like this again :P

  4. The dedicated soundcard is actually loosing more and more popularity, FYI. Onboard sound is becomming more and more advanced, and with the new Intel i7 chip the performance boost that a "dedicated hardware card" promises is next to nothing.

Soundcards are still popular in the audio/music production sector though, but the X-Fi is as good for Professional Audio as a CMI-8738 anyway lol (for those who don't know, they sell for about $10).

[as far as I know]Vista doesn't support EAX anyway, only OpenAL and DirectSound, the only thing X-FI cards do in Vista/2008 is provide the DAC and fancy ports[/correct me if i'm wrong]

Sorry to tell you, but the Creative soundcards are a dying breed.

Oh and in regards to XP/2003 being better as a work environment than Vista/2008, sorry but I disagree 100%. I tried to do some work on XP the other day, and after using Windows 6 for nearly a year now I can't live without it. That reminds me - what you said right there reminds me of what everyone was saying when XP came out... "XP sucks, its so buggy and incompatible! I'm going back to Windows 98, its faster and more stable!" ;)

  5. Over at the win2008workstation, we are working on this. I am actually stepping this up in my to-investigate [havn't even looked at it], right after I get Vista Media Center working [or hit a roadblock]. I'll let you know here in this thread if I make any progress :)

  6. 1) Make sure, in your BIOS, that "Allow USB devices to wake the computer" is enabled. Might be called something else. In AWARD BIOS's [most Gigabyte boards if not all] it's under Power Management.

    2) In Device Manager, under "Human Interface Devices", go into properties for EVERY entry starting from the top > "Power Management" Tab > check "allow this device to wake the computer". If the Power Management tab doesn't appear, skip it and go to the next one in the list.

That should fix it. If it still doesn't work, the game/software is bugged or your drivers are bugged or something. It works fine for me with my XBOX controller though =)

  7. keep it current and help maintain it as 'the single qualified source as a registry of information' about S2K8 as a Workstation's application and game compatibility and performance.

'Qualified'? There is another site dedicated to the Windows 2008 Workstation project, which is more complete and more active than this forum section... I know MSFN came first by a long shot, but... there are many missing and incomplete things on the guide/forums here.

I would like to know that is an internet connection required to install the “Desktop Experience”, “Aero Themes” & other necessary components to convert Server’08 into Workstation? Or they’re present in the installation disk itself?

No internet connection required. DVD isn't required to be inserted either. Simply check the features in Server Manager and they install by themselves.

That "SystemResponsiveness" registry tweak is CRITICAL for sound performance in 2K8, yet most of the other online guides don't mention it at all!

By "all other guides" I assume you mean the only other one actually worth mentioning, win2008workstation, and yes this is true that it isn't featured in the guide. But not everyone needs this tweak, my PC doesn't. But my older and slower one did. I think it only applies to soundcards that don't support hardware acceleration.

A server doesn't sleep or hibernate.

Mine does. Please do some research before just making up your own words. Hyper-V disables Sleep/Hibernate functions. It is unknown whether this is a technical thing, or whether it is deliberate, or whether Server 2008 SP2 will fix this. There is however a work around:

    1) Set the Hyper-V service startup type from Automatic to Manual either via services.msc or the following registry value...

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot]

Change "Start" entry to dword 3 value

    2) Reboot. Sleep and Hibernate should work now, but Hyper-V is turned off. If you want to start Hyper-V, 'Start' the service via services.msc, or run the following command under CMD [command prompt]:

    net start hvboot

    3) Power management will then be disabled so no sleep/hibernate, but Hyper-V should work. You'll need to reboot if you want to put your PC to sleep apparently, but I don't see why you couldn't just stop the Hyper-V service again and it'll work? There may be something that Hyper-V breaks until reboot that prevents it, even if you stop the service...

This is untested, I just stole it from a site on Google cache that is down right now. I'm going to install Hyper-V and give it a go =)

P.S. Make sure you have BIOS Virtualization enabled for ultra-fast Hyper-V!

  8. THE SOLUTION IS HERE

I signed up to MSFN just to help you guys out. I have had this problem on everything newer than XP with all versions of SetPoint and my G5 Mouse [server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008 all do this].

IT IS SIMPLE. YOU MUST MANUALLY UPDATE THE DRIVER IN DEVICE MANAGER TO "Logitech HID-compliant G5 Laser Mouse". But for some reason the newer versions of SetPoint do not even install the driver to your ProgFiles\Setpoint or %WINDIR%\INF directory, it obviously doesn't detect the USB device when installing and you have to manually unpack the original setup package and browse to the folder with the INF's with the 'Have Disk' method. And even then, because all the files were not installed by the Setup, the image/graphic/picture for your particular mouse will be missing on the 'Set buttons' page, although it still works fine.

The driver/mouse detection during setup issue I managed to solve under Server 2003 by running the Setup under the SetPoint subfolder in the original package [NOT the setup.exe in the root] under Windows XP compat. mode, and it would copy the images too so it worked 100%. However this does not help much with NT6 family [Vista/2K8].

It'd be good if Logitech solve this problem, but i've submitted about three bug reports the the past year or more and never heard back from them, and they never fixed it. I think it might be only with some certain USB controllers or something [which is stupid as my chipset is an old Intel 875P which were as common as anything]. Strange hey. Anyway I hope that helps! Peace
