  1. Yeah, I already know it was a bad idea to do it. But as for this particular problem, I worked it out. The drivers that come with this series of vid card are faulty and aren't compatible with Direct3D. I downloaded a hotfix and it works fine now.
  2. Ok, so I had a whole mess of problems lately with my video card. It was causing me to get BSOD so I went out and got a new one. The old card was a Radeon 9800 Pro, the new one is a Radeon HD 2400. Now I was kinda dumb when I was trying to figure out what my original problem was and deleted DirectX from my system (I have XP btw). That caused a whole new nightmare trying to reinstall it, which I won't get into here - suffice it to say that I tried installing it every which way and got errors every time. Someone finally suggested the very simple solution to use a system restore and it actually seems to have worked. Dxdiag confirms that I have 9.0c installed again. However, when I try to play Warcraft 3 now the screen flashes black a few times as it loads the game, then I get that awful error message saying "Warcraft 3 could not initialize DirectX." The drivers for my new vid card are properly installed. So I hopped back to Dxdiag and ran some tests. DirectDraw works fine, but Direct3D utterly fails. Each screen test results in the error "Direct3D test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device)." I don't know what to do now. Does my new video card have incompatibility issues, or is there just a problem with DirectX? I should also mention that under files Dxdiag has these notes: -The file directx.cpl is an old version, which could cause problems. -Several files (d3dx8d.dll, d3dx9d.dll, d3d9d.dll) are debug versions, which will run slower than the retail version. -You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version. I've tried to update DirectX with the latest 9.0c package and these messages are still there. I don't think it's related to the problem, but at this point I'm pretty lost.
  3. Ok, I fixed it (I think) with a simple system restore. The files seem to be all there and dxdiag checks out again. But with the new video card I have Direct3D is failing. I'm going to post about this in the software forum.
  4. Hello - recently I was having a lot of trouble with my video card. I have a new one now and it seems to be working fine, but in my struggles with dealing with my old one I stupidly removed DirectX from my xp system in the hope that I could fix problems by reinstalling it. Well, I followed the instructions here: http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-...tall-directx-9/ I went to Regedit and deleted the directx folder. It says that my system will automatically reinstall DirectX 8.1 when I restart, but it didn't. I've tried with the XP cd inserted too. I also tried installing 8.1 from a game cd (Warcraft 3), and after accepting the ToS it instantly says DirectX was installed. No files or folders being copied or anything. It's clear that nothing was installed - a quick look at dxdiag says "no version found." (It used to say 9.0c there before I wiped it, of course). After that I tried downloading 9.0c, but after I clicked install, the progress bar comes up for a few seconds, then an error window pops up that says "an internal system error occurred. Refer to dxerror.log and DirectX.log for more information." So I went to the dxerror.log file and this is what it says: -------------------- [08/13/08 21:43:21] module: dxupdate(Mar 31 2006), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 189, function: GetDXVersion Failed API: RegQueryValueEx() Error: (2) - The system cannot find the file specified. Current DirectX may be a older version which does not have the version value in the registry. -------------------- [08/13/08 21:43:21] module: dxupdate(Mar 31 2006), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 4666, function: DirectXUpdateGetSetupInformation GetDXVersion() failed. -------------------- [08/13/08 21:43:21] module: dsetup32(Mar 31 2006), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 280, function: CSetup::InstallPlugIn DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn() failed. -------------------- [08/13/08 21:43:21] module: dsetup32(Mar 31 2006), file: setup.cpp, line: 1701, function: CSetup::SetupForDirectX InstallPlugIn() failed. I can't figure out what to do at this point. Every which way I try to reinstall DirectX on my computer doesn't work. dxdiag still comes up with "no version found." Please help!
