  1. I recently purchased a retail boxed version of Windows XP Pro only to find out that the part nbr is a UK-version (E85-02667) although it was made in the USA. I live in the US and have a US-made computer. The product appears to be genuine. It has the COA sticker on the retail box including the silver holographic ribbon underneath the porthole that reads "GENUINE". (According to Microsoft's "how to tell" website, the sealed box and label appear geniune). I have not opened the box yet. I then did a bit of research online to see if this would work on my US-made computer but found little to no documentation regarding this. The only thing I found out was that according to Microsoft, it would work on my computer but that the program had MAJOR programming differences from the US-distributed version. Does anyone know what those differences are and whether I'll be able to use it on my computer? What are some of the problems I might encounter? Any compatibility issues with programs? Again, it is a full retail version, not OEM, not upgrade. I have a Dell computer with an Intel processor, nothing out of the ordinary. Thank you in advance for your help.
  2. I'm using Sony Sound Forge and every time I execute ANY operation, the Windows "Help and Support" window pops up with a message that says "Why can't I get Help from this program? The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which was used in previous versions of Windows and it is not supported in Windows Vista. For more information, see Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) is no longer included with Windows on the Microsoft support website." I have gone into "Settings" and NONE of the checkboxes are checked for BOTH online and offline help. So why does this window keep popping up?!? It's absolutely annoying and preventing me from working. HOW do I turn this blasted thing OFF? Thank you!
  3. Well, I solved the problem (indirectly). After spending an entire day trying different fixes, including chkdsk /r and even running my restore image program from DOS, nothing worked so I ended up disconnecting the C: drive and connecting a spare hard drive as Master on which I did a fresh install of XP, then I reconnected the corrupted "C:" drive as Slave and ran the restore program from the "Master" drive in Windows (not DOS) and then switched the C: drive back to Master, rebooted and everything was back to normal. I have NO idea what happened but this solution worked, especially since I had just created a backup image a week ago. When all else fails... do a restore. If this were to happen again, I would just skip the whole repair and just do a restore. Less of a headache!
  4. I removed my 2nd hard drive from my computer and rebooted the computer. I then got a list of errors (such as ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt, etc... ) which I fixed in DOS and rebooted after each fix. Now when I try to boot, I get as far as the Windows XP logo screen with the windows "flag" and 4 colors and the blue "progress bar" underneath (the one where the blue bars move from left to right) and then it just hangs indefinitely. I have to manually turn the power off and turn the machine back on. I can boot in SAFE MODE no problem. When it is loading the drivers, it stops at "agp440.sys" In safe mode, I disabled the display driver and rebooted. Same problem. No change. Still hangs. I went back and edited the boot.ini file with "/sos" to see what happens. I get a blue screen with two navy bars top and bottom and medium blue in middle in which the following text is printed: "Microsoft Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2) 1 System Processor [1024 MB Memory] Multiprocessor Kernel" And that's it... it just HANGS there.... I've been trying to fix this for the last 7 hours and I'm at wits end. Anybody have any idea what's happening and how I can fix this? Thanks very much!
  5. Yes, just found that out... I didn't know that. Guess that explains why I was having problems. I'll have to buy a new version. Thanks!
  6. D, thanks for the reply. According to this article (see Pink Box), it is NOT advisable to disconnect the C: drive where Vista is installed when installing XP on the 2nd hard drive. It just creates more problems. I'm beginning to wonder if it's a hardware issue.. because my XP installation disk is an OEM that came with my old computer. Hardware is different in my new computer obviously. How does one get around this?
  7. A bit of a newbie here in need of some help. I just got a new Dell with Vista installed on it. I have a 2nd Hard Drive (IDE) that I want to install XP on and then have the choice to boot from either OS. I know there are many tutorials online on how to install XP with Vista installed first but here's my problem..... When I put in the XP SP1 re-installation disk (Home Edition) that came with my OLD computer into the NEW computer's CD-Drive to try and install it, I get a blue screen with the message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem" and it just hangs at that screen. I thought of doing a clean install of XP on that hard drive while still connected to my OLD computer and then moving the Hard Drive over to the NEW computer but the more I read about this, the more I'm beginning to think I need to install it on the new computer so Vista can do its thing to recognize the drive. Note... the two OS's will be on two separate physical HD's - the C: drive has Vista on it, the F: Drive (the IDE drive) is where I want to install XP. How do I do this and get rid of that error message so I can actually install XP on that 2nd hard drive? Thanks very much!
