  1. Thanks geek It was the reg key. For some reason Flip 3d was not allowed. Once I changed the key and stopped/started the service, it worked. T
  2. Morning all, I wanted to try out Flip 3d, but for some reason when I press Win + Tab nothing happens. When I press just Win, my start menu opens so I don't think its a keyboard issue (see system specs for reason). Is there something I'm forgetting to do? I made sure that DWM is enabled and that Flip 3d is enabled in gpedit. System Specs -- C2D 6300 (no OC), eVGA 7950GT 512mg PCI-E (no OC), Forceware 169.25 , Samsung 216BW, Logitech G15 (switch set to computer mode), Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 - Aero is enabled Thanks in advance.... 3. IIRC, when you let the system automatically manage the page file, it will grow or shrink the paging file as necessary. From my understanding of pagefile mechanics, that can cause the pagefile to be fragmented on systems with long uptimes and ones that run many applications. Each time there is a need the pagefile grows, and when there is no need it shinks, regardless of other file usage. The best pagefile setup is a large, fixed pagefile on a fast drive that doesn't have the OS on it. On my system I usually put the pagefile on the secondary controller, primary drive, and its fixed at around 3gb. I put it there so that any paging calls are made on the secondary contoller isolated from any OS or application calls so that I can take advantage of "hardware multitasking" - the OS/Apps use the primary contoller to its fullest extent while any pagefile calls are on the secondary. 4. Greetings. I'm trying to help out a couple of friends of mine who are not as technically savvy who are doing a clean wipe of their systems. Just want to make sure that I haven't left anything out.... OS Installs – The Easy Way 0. Backup Data – backup anything you need to save Pictures, bookmarks, emails, documents, save games, etc 1. Partition – If you only have one hard disk, partition into two drives Boot Drive – OS and App installs Data – Documents, Pictures, etc. 2. Install OS – Install to the Boot Drive 3. Install “Internet” Drivers Install only the drivers you need to access the net – Modem, NIC, etc 4. Windows Update Get all updates – may take several visits and reboots 5. Activate Windows 6. Install Base Apps Install only the apps you use all the time – Winzip, 7-Zip, Winrar, etc 7. Base OS Tweaks Swap File, Services, etc 8. Verify Make sure apps works and you still have net access 9. Defragment Disk 10. Image OS Make an image of your install – Ghost, Acronis, etc 11 Install remaining drivers Video, Sound, etc 12 Use as you like Anything that I forgot or that you would add? Thanks in advance..... T
  5. Morning, Saw this link while surfing around.... http://blog.atola.com/restoring-factory-hard-drive-capacity/ I'm curious if anyone has seen this before or heard about this before. Personally, it sounds like some sort of trickery that can ruin a hard drive instead of "fix" it. Anyone try this or heard about this before? T
  6. That's my thought as well, fizban2....its just lack of driver support for the 64bit version. Eventually I'll go back to it, but for now x86 is working so I'll stay there. Once thing I did notice however is that when I installed XP, my msinfo32 report showed all 4g but the same report run in Vista only shows 3.25g I'm guessing its because Vista may have better native support for higher end video cards -- I have a eVGA 7950GT 512mg PCI-E -- it shows the memory as taken in msinfo32 so the OS and other programs don't try to use it. My system is very stable and runs great. Have x86 drivers for all my hardware and now that Creative ALchemy is out I'm able to get hardware sound support back in my D3D games. T
  7. I had some issues with my Linksys Wireless card and went back to Vista x86. For some reason it wouldn't stay connected. I'm assuming that going to x64 with the extra ram was causing issues, but those may be corrected with SP1 or better drivers from Linksys down the road. Other than that, no issues at all. Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 rev 1.0 C2D e6300 (not OC'd) 4g DDR2-667 Patriot ram eVga 7950 GT 512mg PCI-E Linksys WRG54GS v1 Logitech G15 Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Vista Ultimate x86 T
  8. I originally had 2gb of ram and just purchased another 2g. I've read the stickies and other posts about this issue. I realize that my 945 chipset based motherboard (Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 rev1.0) cannot fully address the 4gb of memory I just installed, plus I have a 512mg graphic card which explains why Vista only shows 3.5g available. My question is -- Was purchasing the extra 2g a waste? Is there anyone else in this situation who has noticed a performance increase when going above 2g of ram? Thanks in advance... T
  9. That is a good thing if your not running any apps at all. What that shows is that the processor is not doing anything...its idle. If your not running any apps and some strange process is taking up all your CPU cycles, it may be one indication of a virus or other malware (mind you, its only an indication and not proof). Hope this helps.... T
  10. Morning all. I made an nLite'd XP and it runs great, but I have one issue. I use Ventrilo for talking to my guildmates and friends, but now I get a message saying that the Text-to-Speech library is missing. Does anyone know off hand what I need to install in order to get that back? Its kinda minor, I realize, but its something I'd like to install. FYI, I'm talking after installation, not to add back to nLite. Thanks T
  11. Been reading this thread and learning alot....thanks OP I do have a question concerning my own rig and how to improve upon it. Mobo - Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 rev 1.0 I have one SATA HDD, and one IDE HDD and CDROM. The SATA is used as the primary boot drive. Financially I can't afford getting another SATA drive for a while, but I was thinking about getting an IDE to SATA converter for my other HDD and possibly for my CDROM (not sure if they make them tho). If I do that, will I see any increased performance since I'm going all SATA? I'm a little confused about my mobo settings. WinXP shows the Intel SATA Drivers in the Device Manager and I think I'm getting a good transfer rate from my SATA Drive, but I don't want to slow my system down by mixing IDE and SATA drives if by going all SATA (even with converters that I know slow down transfer rates) I can increase performance by turning off the IDE channels in the bios. If my post doesn't make sense, its probably because I need more coffee..... Thanks in advance for advice/help. T
  12. I want to say its a DiamondMax 21 320g SATA drive, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm at work right now. I am sure its a Maxtor, 320g, SATA-II drive tho. T EDIT -- I'm also thinking about installing Vista. Would I need to slipstream or F6 the drivers there as well?
  13. So do I need to look at those advanced options to get more performance or just slipstream the F6 drivers into my XP CD? I'm still a little confused.... Thanks T
  14. Greetings all. Let me start with my system specs... C2D E6300 2g DDR2 Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 1x SATA-II and 2x IDE HD Drives (can't remember make/model numbers) My question concerns the SATA Drive. I can install XP cleanly without needing to F6 any drivers. According to SiSoft Sandra I get about 50mg throughput and 17ms access time. Even tho I can install XP, would I get better performance if I F6'd or NLite'd the intel sata drivers? My board has an ICH7 Chipset and in the bios I don't see anything about setting my system for AHCI. Thanks in advance.... T
