  1. Thanks LegoLiam I think it's the distributed link tracking client and dynamic volume manager. My vLite and DriveimageXML work fine together with those two retained in the vLite install. It will interesting to see what you come up with. 2. I'm sorry but I didn't understand a word of what you just said. Are you querying the reason as to why I want to use DriveimageXML? What's a WIM image? f.axaple? What I need to be able to do is backup my laptop. I don't fancy going through a complete re-install of Vista, followed by re-installing all of my favourite programmes and setting up my system to exactly how I want it, and THEN find out that I can't back it up (using DriveimageXML) because I'm missing an important component.
  3. Sorry? I'll try to be clearer for you. Windows Sidebar & Gadgets Dynamic Volume manager iSCSI Distributed link tracking client IPSEC policy agent Microsoft DFS Replication Readyboost Windows remote management Secondary login These components were NOT in my initial Lastsession.ini Now they are. What I'll do then is remove all of these components one by one until I find out what's preventing the Shadow Copy Service from working. I was hoping someone here might actually know so that it would save me the work. I'm looking at quite a lot of re-installs here I'm guessing.
  4. An update: I've tried to remove less components than previously. These are the items that I've left in the vLite setup and one (or more) of these items seems to be critical in order for Volume shadow copy & DriveIMageXML to work. I'd like to know which of these items I can remove and which I need to retain in order to keep WSC working: Windows Sidebar & Gadgets Dynamic Volume manager iSCSI Distributed link tracking client IPSEC policy agent Microsoft DFS Replication Readyboost Windows remote management Secondary login I'm guessing it must be Dymanic Volume Manager. Please advise. Thanks. Once I've removed the excess, I think I'm going to have a very nice vLite Vista install
  5. Thanks dcyphure. It's set to manual. If you could recommend a good free backup/imaging programme, I could try that just to see if there's a difference.
  6. Thanks.I hope this helps. ; vLite preset file [information] Version = 1.1 on 2.0.50727.1433 Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Target = Windows Vista HOMEPREMIUM 32-bit - 6.0.6000.16386 - English (United States) [Compatibility] Aero Glass File and printer sharing (Server) Internet Explorer Internet Information Services (IIS) Recommended Scanners and Cameras System Restore Windows Fax and Scan [CustomHide] [Components] ;# Accessories # Accessibility Speech Support Welcome Center Windows Sidebar and Gadgets ;# Drivers # Display adapters Diva Server Ethernet network adapters Modems Printers-Apollo Printers-Brother Printers-Canon Printers-Citizen Printers-Dell Printers-Diconix Printers-Epson Printers-Fuji Xerox Printers-Fujitsu Printers-Generic printer Printers-Gestetner Printers-HP Printers-IBM Printers-Infotec Printers-Konica Printers-Konica Minolta Printers-Kyocera Mita Printers-Lanier Printers-Lexmark Printers-Minolta Printers-Minolta-QMS Printers-NEC Printers-NRG Printers-Oce Printers-Oki Printers-Okidata Printers-Olivetti Printers-Panasonic Printers-QMS Printers-Ricoh Printers-Samsung Printers-Savin Printers-Seikosha Printers-Sharp Printers-Sony Printers-Star Printers-Tally Printers-Tektronix Printers-Wipro ePeripherals Printers-Xerox QLogic Fibre Channel Adapter Scanners Sound controllers Storage controllers-Adaptec Storage controllers-Elxstor Storage controllers-Hewlett-Packard Storage controllers-IBM ServeRAID Storage controllers-ICP vortex Storage controllers-Intel Storage controllers-ITE Storage controllers-LSI Logic Storage controllers-MegaRAID Storage controllers-nVidia Storage controllers-Promise Storage controllers-SiS Storage controllers-ULi Storage controllers-Via ;# Games # Game Explorer Inbox Games Premium Inbox Games ;# Hardware Support # Dynamic Volume Manager Firewire (1394) Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Modem Support Smartcards Windows Mobile Device Center ;# Languages # Japanese Korean Simplified Chinese Table Driven Text Input Processor Traditional Chinese ;# Multimedia # Media Center Movie and DVD Maker Music and Video samples Sample Pictures Screensavers SideShow Sound Recorder Windows Calendar ;# Network # Connect to a Network Projector MSN Installer Remote Desktop and Assistance Windows Collaboration ;# Services # Distributed Link Tracking Client IPsec Policy Agent Microsoft DFS Replication ReadyBoost Remote Registry Secondary Logon WebDAV (WebClient) Windows Remote Management Windows Search Windows Time ;# System # Disk Quota IMAPIv2 Burning Support Jet Database Engine Microsoft Agent Natural Language Parental Controls Sync Center Windows Easy Transfer [Options] DEP (Data Execution Prevention) = Enabled (AlwaysOn) User Account Control (UAC) = Enabled AntiSpyware Realtime Protection = Default AutoPlay = Enabled Paging Executive = Enabled Power scheme = High performance Power button = Shutdown Sleep button = Sleep Hibernation = Default Memory requirement = Default Control Panel - Classic View = Disabled Show hidden files and folders = Yes Show protected operating system files = Yes Show extensions for known file types = Yes IE Phishing Filter = Default IE Phishing Verification Ballon Tips = Default [Protection] [Drivers] [unattended] AcceptEULA SkipNewUser SkipProductKey SkipAutoActivation NetworkLoc = 1 [Hotfixes] [LanguagePacks]
  7. No MagicAndre1981. I have not disabled the Volume Shadow Copy feature. Certainly, not knowingly. So what do you need that I can post here that will allow you to see what I'm missing? I've just tried a relatively full vLite install. I selected all of the compatibility applications of which the only one that I can see that has the shadow copy feature is System Restore. Of the components which I can select to be removed, I know of none that would have affected Show copy. I'm still getting the same error. How can I give you a list of those that I've chosen to remove or retain? Thanks.
  8. My vLite install seems to be going well on my Kohjinsha SH8. However I get the following error when I try to backup my fresh install using DriveimageXML: Could not initialise Windows Volume Shadow service (VSS) Code: error 80000FFFF Make sure VSSVC.exe is running in your task mangager. Click help for more information. Clicking OK gives me the following additional error: Warning: Volume could not be properly locked. You can still continue but the backup image may be damaged. I would continue but I fear the backup WILL be damaged. I assume that I have taken out one component too many. Your thoughts please.
