  1. I have prepared a set of batch files you can run on windows 98 that will

prepare a slimmed down version of windows xp if you have a winxp sp1.

    You can download here:

    http://home.earthlink.net/~storageplace/jdeboeck98.zip

I ran it fine, but without removing internet explorer, remote desktop

connection, and shell images. The zip includes removing these. Let me

know if any bugs, though ofcourse there shouldn't be.

    <quote from the included readme.txt>

For more info, go to http://jdeboeck.msfnhosting.com "Windows XP SP1 in

    185MB"

    OVERVIEW:

    - Files and folders should be placed at the root of the windows xp

installation files (where i386 is an immediate subfolder).

    - Prep.bat copies winxp from cd drive g:\. If this is not where your

winxp cd is, then edit prep.bat to reflect this. If you already have

your winxp files on your hard drive, skip prep.bat and start

jdeboeck.bat, which will automatically apply all of the batches

sequentially. If you do not want all the batches applied, edit

jdeboeck.bat (remark out lines "rem ...").

    - If your system complains about expand, findstr, or makecab, use the

ones supplied in "jdeboeck\98ish coms\". Copy these to your

"windows\command\" folder. You may want to back up your originals, if

    they exist.

    - When I changed JDEBoeck's original batches, I remarked out the

original lines as "rem orig ...". Files changed have a "98" in the

filename, except for r-msnexplorer.bat, which I think has an error I

    fixed.

    IMPORTANT:

    - Since prep.bat will delete everything, before anything I copy the

following files to my i386mini folder:

    dosnet.inf

    runonceex.inf

    txtsetup.sif

    winnt.sif

    - I have found the need to delete the unattend.txt that comes with winxp

    cd. Prep.bat does this.

    - I had problems with similar file names, like accessories and

accessibility, so I accessibility reads as cessibility.

    MISC:

    - xpboot.bin is the cd boot image file for the winxp cd. xpcd.nrb is

for Nero cd burning software. Double click on this, drag your xpcd

files and you are ready to burn (assuming xpboot.bin is located in

    d:\xpcd\setup\)

    - Shortcuts in setup folder point to d:\xpcd\i386\

runonceex.inf shortcut is in case you are using help from

    http://gosh.msfnhosting.com

    </readme.txt>

  2. Hope this isn't too lame...

UltraEdit32 can do custom highlighting, and you can download inf file highlighting template below (though pretty old):

    Software to create inf files

Back in NT4 we had sysdiff, that would create a registry snapshot and save it as an .inf file. This was very handy. However sysdiff won't work in windows XP or higher. As far as I know there is no other Microsoft tool to create inf files. There might be 3rd party apps
