  1. Any reason you did that ? -Did you have Internet before that ? -Is there any led on the router that states Internet Connection is OK ? -Can you still connect to the router trough your computer's browser (typing the Ip in the adress bar) ? I figured it out folks, thanks. I didn't realize you can set up the home LAN to connect with the internet with the router using DHCP... thought it had to be static assigned IP addresses for the locals for some reason. It turns out Zone Alarm was the major issue preventing access but after playing with some settings on both computers for a while it finally worked. I'm good now. Thanks!
  2. Thanks but that article is not what I need. File sharing and customizing is the easy part, I can do that. Itz the connection configuration I need assistance with as described in my post. I finally got my computers networked but here's what happened: 1. I disabled the DHCP setting on the router, where it displayed it's own IP address to use as the Gateway address on both computers 2. I changed the IP addresses on each computer to 2 different but similar static addresses (one digit- the last in the address- was different) 3. I added the subnet address as 255.255.255.0 4. I added the gateway address for the router to access the web 5. checked to make sure both computers had matched workgroup names 6. Opened Windows Explorer on XP computer and opened Network Connections, it saw the laptop by name but could not display or access any files or folders - ERROR message 7. Opened Windows Explorer on the laptop and opened network connections (Enttire Network), did NOT see the other computer and could not access any files or folders - ERROR message 8. Disabled the firewalls on both 9. THEN I was able to see and share files and folders using the router [acting as a hub or switch i guess], but there was no internet access (with or without the firewalls diabled there was no internet on either computer while networked) AGAIN, I want to be able to have my home LAN, where both computers can share files & folders with each other but where both can connect to the web as well, ideally- independently (one can connect if the other is off) Still need help here with the firewall configuration too if possible - I'm running Zone Alarm on both - what configuration do I change to allow it to access the computers without having to shut ZA down? *Aggrevated* grrrrrrrr... HELP
  3. I have a Netgear RP114 4-port router. Currently, I have my cable modem running into it as the internet source and and my desktop and laptop plugged in to be able to use the internet simultaneously. What I would like to do is network both computers, where both would be able to access files from each other, but both would still be able to access the internet, while of course, access to my computer files on both is restriced to only my two computers and not the firewalled internet. 1. Can I configure the computers/router to do this? 2. How do I set this up, if so? Please help me out here *FYI, I also have a 4 port hub (not in use), but since it is old and only 10Mbps, I wish not to use this and keep the setup as simple as possible
  4. I played a DVD in the standard MCE DVD player and tthen in Nero showtime. 1. I like the controls better in Showtime 2. It looks clearer in Showtime 3. I like the start-up interface of MCE 4. I would also like to be able to play HD-DVDs and Blu-rays but the standard player woon't read them. Someone mentioned to me the other day that you can change a codec or sumthin to allow it to use another program to play DVDs thru MCE. How can I do this?
