  1. Well I fixed it. When installing XP the third time I chose to not do the quick format. That seems to have worked. Thanks anyway.
  2. Its a laptop there is no OS on it. Is there a way to run HDTune with no OS?
  3. Umm, yes its the title of the thread. If you read my post you can see in the first sentence I DBaN autonuked it, so no need to backup. The only thing I got out of this post is hard drive failure. Can anyone elso second that? Anyway I am nukeing the HDD again and I hope that works.
  4. I tried installing XP Pro after up/downgrading from Vista on my laptop. I did a DBaN "autonuke", and started the XP install, it formatted fine, and now Im at the GUI setup where it actually installs Windows... about 2-5 minutes in it will give me a fatal error reading something like this: "An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Data error (cyclic redundancy check)." etc etc etc.... I figured this meant my XP cd was damaged (it had a few light laser scratches). I ran CDCHECK, all i got was this: "note;hash; For at least one file only file readability was tested because no valid hash file was found (code: 54);" I searched for a solution on and off for a few hours (I have a 1 month old son) and found only 2 helpful articles one here where someone had the same problem and never fixed it. link here And the other said it was probably a bad hard drive/controller. The vista device manager said it had a sata driver but DBaN says its ata. Could the problem be coming from the lack of a sata driver? Really I have no idea, so any help will be rewarded with good karma. Thanks Adam
