  1. that seems like a logical answer, but there are no files in that directory, the is a pol file in the user directory though, which is not read-only.
  2. I want to force users to type CTRL-ALT-DEL on the login screen before entering their usernames and pwds, and disable the display of the last username. I have done this before on other systems, I go in gpedit.msc - Computer Config - Windows Set - Security Set - Local Policies - Security Options. I try to change the "Don't display last username" and "do not require CTRL-ALT-DEL" and I get this error: Security Templates: Failed to save the Local Security Policy I tried to go in the Security Config and Analysis snap in and set these properties from there, but this also fails: Configure machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system\disablecad. Warning 5: Access is denied. Error configuring machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system. Configure machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system\dontdisplaylastusername. Warning 5: Access is denied. Error configuring machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system. I tried to change it manually in the registry, but no effect after a reboot. I am out of options now. I have never seen this type of error before. I am logged on as Administrator and the computer is not on a network of any kind. I do not see why I would not be able to edit the local security policies. Do any of you guys have an idea here. Thanks.... John
  3. I've been using it for a couple months now. I have XP installed also, but I only use that for iTunes, as it doesnt work in 2k3. I miss some things from XP like PrevX and some other progs that dont run in 2k3. I dont want to change because I find 2k3 more stable than XP. I might switch back soon if more programs i find dont work in 2k3. JS
  4. I solved the problem the easy way, i reinstalled 2003 on itself, saved my settings and kept my files. Thanks anyway.
  5. I usually install XP and then 2003, and it works fine, but today I had to reinstall XP, so I went ahead and it as ok until I tried booting 2003, I see it in the ms boot loader menu, but when I select it, the screen goes blank, and restarts after a sec or two. I tried fixmbr and fixboot from the CD recovery console, but no luck. Anybody got an idea? Thanks.
  6. I am definitly logged on as built-in admin. I tried to change it manually different times with the registry also, but I can't find the problem and its getting really annoying to have to retype my username everytime over the last one.
  7. Um, Im not really sure what's admion, but I am definitly logged on as "Administrator" on the local comp. And the problem are the permissions, how do I fix them?
  8. Nope, its all local, on a workgroup, I am logged on as local admin.
  9. I have a few users that need to log on interactively on my Windows 2003 Server so I wanted to remove the "Last Username" from the login screen. I did it a few times on XP workstations a while back. I tried to edit the "Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name" item in the policy settings, but I get an Access Denied error. I am logged as local admin and i can change other policy settings, except this one. I can't even change it directly by the registry, it gives me a similar error. I tried later to do the same thing on the XP that's also installed on the machine, I get the same error, I have always been able to do this on XP before, but now it seems that I can't. Anyone has any ideas how to resolve this? John
  10. I am not currently running a server but I have Windows Server 2003 installed and I want to run it as VPN server. Let's say that I have an always-on connection and that my server is properly configured, what do i do with it locally once its running? Do I always need to be logged on locally, or can I use it as an always on VPN server while still using it locally as a workstation? Will my server be online if I am on the Windows Login Window (not logged in locally). John
