  1. Thanks again. I'm not sure if that one is it either. It's quite similar yet not quite the same. That's ok though. I'll play with it later on and see if it's configurable or not. For now, I have to sleep though. 4:46 a.m. and I have to sleep. Got only tomorrow left to get things packed for moving into my new house Happy for the new house, unhappy on the work it's going to be. Goodnight and thank you again. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  2. Not sure. Page isn't available via the link you just posted. Thank you though. Edit - I figured a way to get around hotlinking to the geocities. Anyway, no, that's not the right one unfortunately. Thanks. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  3. I tried clicking on that link and apparently the theme is no longer available for download from themexp. If anyone has this theme and would host it or send it to me I'd be extremely greatful. What caught my eye about it was this amazing desktop screenshot posted in another thread by sven: http://www3.sympatico.ca/karl.david/desktop_January.jpg Anyway, thanks to anyone willing to help. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  4. This guy has the wrong idea. He's been doing too much of everything he's doing and needs to get out and enjoy life. There is so much more than just behind a computer monitor all day long. I love my computer(s) and enjoy using them as well as configuring and tweaking them here and there when needed. However, I live my own life and enjoy doing other things. This guy has nothing but a computer it seems. Shame. newdles http://www.webzila.com

Great find? Well thanks, I've been a member of the pit for a good long while now. Great place. Dave, the owner, is working on some Beta tests right now and customizing the scores as well as the results. You could give it a try if you wish but make sure you follow the instructions on that page on how to remove and reload the beta activeX controller. http://www.pcpitstop.com/beta Anyway, if you go to the forums there and look at the way it used to be, highest scores used to be 3400 something and that was with a p4EE. I was scoring 2100 almost with my little p4 2.4c and no overclocking other than the video card. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  6. This is a very handy cd. I have no use for it on my personal computer but I repair computers quite often. Just today I used it for Windows 2000 as I had to do a reformat and reinstall of the operating system for someone. I ended up having to do much more on top of that but the download time would have taken an extra 10+ minutes. Wouldn't have been a problem if the computer had NIC drivers installed (which I refuse to do without any type of firewall running). This made it so that I'd have had to burn to cd and THEN install to the other computer. Anyway, thank you Microsoft. Was finally a pleasure doing business with you newdles http://www.webzila.com
  7. What operating system do you run? NetBIOS isn't just for Linux networking to Windows. It's actually its own language. It stands for Network Basic Input/Output System. All it does is allow applications on different computers to communicate with each other. Here is a link for you to learn a bit about it if interested - http://huizen.dds.nl/~jacco2/samba/smb.html Here, go have fun http://members.rogers.com/viperzone/HelpFi...rk/netstat.html newdles http://www.webzila.com
  8. You can't remove those folders period if they ever get installed. The only way to prevent this it to prevent the call for them. How you do this is beyond my knowledge though. You "could" remove them possibly though. It's a roundabout way but it would work maybe. Ever heard of Knoppix? It's Linux on a cd that requires no installation and is free. Works great for silly things like this. You could download and burn the cd image to a cd and then attempt to delete the files after booting into Knoppix. The downfall is possible side effects. It might cause issues with Windows but could easily be fixed by reverting the steps above to what they were before you touched anything. However, upon doing this (even if no errors within Windows), it may still create the folders itself. I'm pretty sure it will even if you could delete them. Kind of the same thing and situation as that pesky wutemp folder that I hate. Guess I need to stop using Windows Updates huh? newdles http://www.webzila.com
  9. That's the downfall to Sp2 LouCypher. By default, and now required, automatic updates is set to automatic. With Sp1, you can disable automatic updates without loss of functionality. Sp2 requires it or else you can't update Windows. I could be wrong, but that's good probable cause and I've heard the issue stated from others. One thing I would check though just before you got too into this, make sure Cryptographic Service is set to Automatic and it's started. To check on this and to set accordingly, click start > run and type services.msc and hit enter. That is if you didn't already know to do this. newdles http://www.webzila.com

http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp Take the pcpitstop full system test and post the results back here as instructed in detail on how to via the above posted link. Once I view your test results I can know alot more about your computer and give you appropriate advice accordingly. If your system itself is slow, clean it (disk cleanup and other tools). You can also organize it by defragmenting the drive(defragment with 3rd party tool OTHER than the default defragmenter in Windows). There are also ways of improving performance without taking visual or functionality hits by turning the wrong things off. System restore, Indexing service, Automatic Updates can, and in my opinion, should be turned off as they slow your system down and are quite ineffective. You could also try BootVis from Microsoft that will speed up the boot up and shut down times quite a bit. Anyway, I'll suggest more once your test results are posted. Here is an example of what my results look like and so you can use for comparison as you should get a much better score with your system. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=WPDPKWYP64MSKC3X It's an old test but still something to go buy. I've since then added a 250 gig hard drive as well as another 512 mb of ram newdles http://www.webzila.com
  11. Are you sure they're empty? What operating system are you running? It could be because of what you installed with Windows. If you created one of those custom unattended cds then that could be the reason why. Winlogon.exe is basically just a service in a way. It initiates all user settings and such as well as user names and passwords. Since Netmeeting, MSN Gaming Zone, etc.. are all part of Windows Xp (for example), they're all installed and part of each user account created. Therefore, it checks those folders to ensure everything is properly initialized amongst other things yet it doesn't ever "stop" using them. Another thing though is that maybe you have your Windows Explorer settings wrong? Check to make sure you have Show all Hidden Files & Folders selected in tools > folder options > view tab. Even though the stated files/folders aren't considered hidden files & folders, you never know. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  12. Sounds to me like the Print Spooler service is disabled or not starting properly. Check to see if the service is disabled or not and if it is, set it to Automatic. To do so if you don't already know, click start > run and type services.msc and hit enter. Make sure Print Spooler, Server, DHCP, DNS, are all set to Automatic and that they're started. Then, make sure SSDP Discovery Service, and Network Location Awareness are all set to Manual and started as well. Once you've ensured the above, see if the problem persists if you had to make any changes. If you didn't change anything, then you might have Xp's firewall enabled which prevents file and printer sharing unless properly configured. To check if that's enabled/disabled, if you didn't already know, click start > and then right click on my network places and select properties. Now, right click or double click on local area connection (or whatever you use for your network connection) and select properties again. At the top, click on the advanced tab and uncheck the box to enable the firewall if it has a checkmark. Click apply and ok. Check all the above on both computer and then reboot each. Then check to see if the printer is shared and accessible. Edit - the firewall goes for other software firewalls as well. Normally you don't have to disable them but open the ip range of your router which is generally 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255 or 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.255. Hope this helps, newdles http://www.webzila.com
  13. Another thing you may notice is that, if your speculations were true, then they are backwards. Look at the bottom of each of the home pages. MSFN: TechZone: Msfn has been around longer anyway. Unfortunately, today is the first day I've been able to join the forum as I just found out about it this morning. Good find I may add. I've been a member of http://www.pcpitstop.com and its forums for a good while now. Always nice to know of the many forums out there that are nice and knowledgeable. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  14. Ok, well I found the problem after long hours of searching today. Apparently Compaq doesn't like giving out too much information about its computers from the older "golden" days. According to their website, the computer I was repairing didn't have video or a motherboard as well as it didn't take memory sticks either basically. Anyway, I ended up getting a workaround to find some info on the motherboard. I couldn't get the motherboard make/model and the video was onboard. I didn't even think about the possibility of it being onboard but figured it out later. So through link after link of searching, I managed to discover what type of onboard video it had. Then later, I also found the drivers. Just figured I'd let everyone know just in case they ever run into this form of problem. The resolution was so "indirect" so I really have no way of describing the exact fix. Anyhow, Thanks to all who read this. newdles http://www.webzila.com
  15. Hi, A friend of mine from work needed his pc fixed as he couldn't even log on to Windows anymore. I managed to save all his data thanks to the fact that he had 2 hard drives and I had Knoppix. Anyway, after finally storing his data on one drive, I decided to format and install Win2k Pro onto his machine. It was running 98se with the fat32 filing system which is just too buggy. I figured ntfs would do him well even though slightly slower. Upon installing then initially booting up into Windows, I realized that he didn't give me any drivers cds. The problem is that I cannot find ANY drivers for his system other than the Network drivers. Drivers I'm missing are the Motherboard drivers and VGA video drivers. Since I've never used VGA cards myself, I'm unsure on how to go about installing drivers and configuring the card itself. The problem is that not only do I not have drivers for the card, but I don't know what the card is. Anyway, what I was wondering is how I need to go about this to get the card working? I think you have to install motherboard drivers first, reboot, enable vga, and then install vga drivers but I'm unsure. I'm also unsure of where to get the drivers from as the system test from http://www.pcpitstop.com doesn't even tell me what the card or the motherboard is nor does aida32 I've been a member of their forums for a while now and have used their tests many times to help troubleshoot issues for others and myself. Here is a link to the system test if anyone wants to view it - http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?i...WWWAWFDYMMSNDXX The pc is kinda junky so don't worry about the score. Functionality is the only thing I am worried about here Anyone that can help out with any information is greatly appreciated. newdles http://www.webzila.com
