I had the same trouble with SATA. I just disabed it in the BIOS I was so frustrated and fed up with it! Works fine for me and if the laptop is a snitch slower than with SATA I don't really mind. Check my step by step guide on installing XP if you have further trouble. I wrote down all the steps after I went to this hell by myself.
