I have four XP CD's and none of them work, but the CD reader worked last week...

I had a hard disk failure, and cannot get the system to recognise the XP cd as bootable, can I format the hard disk as a USB drive from another XP system? If so, how, or are there utilities I can use? I have looked everywhere I can search, but come up with nothing...

Just a note to announce myself, just joined, and seeking help trying to get a laptop going after a failure with a hard disk.
