  1. Sounds familiar; 1) Did you by any chance install Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta? I did. And after about 24 hours it made my computer to crawl. Had to restart and everything was ok for a while, and again crawling.... And crashed my Office XP Pro!!!! Couldn't open any office files before I restarted my computer. Naturally uninstalled, and ever since everything has been ok. 2) I think (not sure about this!!!!!), that Symantec (Norton) had some kind of malfunctioning installer on their update; ( this was before that AntiSpyware incident) I have Norton Internet Security 2005 and SystemWorks 2005 premier installed (have had Norton since 1998 I think), and got the usual updates. After the updates Norton AntiVirus was working ok, Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier was ok, but the firewall was real slow when opening it and I couldn't change my firewall settings. And my computer was overall acting real slow. Couldn't find the solution. Uninstalled all Symantec products, reinstalled them all, and everything was working great/ as supposed to. This might be an issue concerning only my computer, but after reinstalling all the Symantec products, I got an update which seemed to me to be a batch file. I do not know, and most definately, I do not understand what happened, but it solved my problems.
  2. I had the exactly the same problem when I installed XP Pro on my computer. My DSL modem didn't renew the IP address after the time that my ISP asked for it (=30 minutes here). I had to restart my comp every time. Everything seemed to be ok, but even the the release/renew -commands didn't help. Finally found out that it was my modem drivers ( which were the right ones, and worked with most of the computers) that didn't work right, and got the beta-drivers for my modem from the manufacturer and ever since has been working ok. So have been using beta-drivers for 2 years now
  3. Just a guess, but: do you happen to be a client of All Systems Datatel (ASDT) Sacramento California which provides different communication services?
  4. Thank you Vann. Exactly as you said
  5. Okay. I admit, I'm confused. So please explain stupid me; I see a lot of discussion about the builds of SP2: build 2180 is supposed to be final or RTM and so on. What does RTM stand for? What about those different builds? There has been now downloadable version for the IT professionals which is build 2158 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). So what are those 2179/2180 for? Are they supposed to different? TIA
  6. OK. Thank you all for your help. I'm on again. It was a hardware problem, ie. both my HD and motherboard were broken and now have been changed.
  7. Sorry, have been away for a while (I think you quess) OK. Here comes rest of the story. Finally it went into a situation where I coudn´t restart; XP went to a point where the XP logo comes and then it jumped back in the beginning. Starting didn´t succeed in any mode; safe mode, last good known.....etc. Nothing helped. I made the repair install for XP and nothing changed. I emptied the CMOS, didn´t help. Finally I formatted my C-drive and made a new install. Everything seemed to be ok but after awhile the startup problem renewed. But got this up after several retries when I finally left it here without trying, the computer cooled down ( yes, fans work fine), and started normally. So I was thinking this might be a hardware problem after all. Now do you have any further ideas where the problem is? Memory? TIA
  8. I have Spybot and allready used it. Nothing found. I just tried to use defragment; all went well with C-drive (were the OS is), but unable to use defragment in drive D. Any further ideas?
  9. Last night my 1/2 year old AMD Duron 2600+ computer (512 RAM) turned extremely slow. Task Manager tells that the CPU usage was jumping between 20-95, sometimes even 100 % though I don't have any applications open. I did not find any solution for this. Tried to restore, but naturally(?) it didn't change anything. Tried Norton GoBack, didn't help. Then it lost my D-drive ( two partitions C: and D:), or says that it has not been formatted. Shut down and restarted several times trying different things. Found D-drive again and right now everything works again, CPU about 2 % when idle etc. But the startup time is now really long, about 2-3 minutes. I have Win XP Pro, the latest Norton Internet Security with all the updates, Norton System Works Pro 2004 etc. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  10. I've Win XP Professional with all the updates on a new computer, Norton Internet Security 2004, Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro etc. For some reason my USB connected DSL modem power stays sometimes on allthough I shut down the computer and the computer power is off. If I don't notice to unplug the modem, it can't find all the necessary settings to create a connection. And now for a few times the Windows has not been able to perform the automatic shutdown (Windows is shutting down..) Any help would be nice. TIA
  11. The HDD capasity is on max, over 6500 MB on both partitions,(48 GB free space on Cand over 54 GB on D).....so I think further assistance is still needed. Thanks anyway. BTW: this is a new computer that I've used now about 1 month, so I don't think this is all messed up.
  12. Windows XP Professional SP1 installed. For some reason my system restore function does not work at all. It is enabled, and I can find and create restore points but it does not restore the old settings (=something like "..no changes have been made.."). Any ideas what's wrong? Any others settings that may affect? TIA
  13. I installed XP Pro on my new computer. This MPU-401 was my default MIDI Music Playback device. All other types were ok(ram. mp3,mpg), but the mid-files didn't work. The playback started ok, but there was no sound. The Device Manager says that it is working ok. I changed the device to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth and the midi-files work. BUT: now I am missing all the computer sounds: opening Xp etc. I don't need those, but.... Anyone have an idea what happened. TIA
