  1. what the frick is this nonsense on my start bar? I don't speak Chinese, haven't downloaded anything, and can't find ANY responsible processes for it!!! WHAT TO DO??? WHERE DID IT come from?
  2. Hi, I'm at school and connected to my school's wireless network(on my laptop of course), but I can't get utorrent to work, becuase all ports are blocked, is there some website that can tell me what router or isp i'm on, so i can find the website.ip/etc to allow the ports to be open??? at home it works fine...but how can I get it to work while at school?
  3. hey cluberti, thanks so much for your help and sticking with me, guess I'll have to buy another cd on Ebay... just one more question: what can I do about this error until then? Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file. I'm guessing once I get a new CD, I'll be able to SYS the file?
  4. I tried getting the CD to work some more and now after the Press any key to boot message, THIS nonsense appears: TRAP 0000000D==============GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT========================== tr=0028 cr0=00000011 cr2=00000000 cr=00000000 gdt limit=03ff be=00017000 idt limit=07FF base=00017400 cs=eip=0008:0031A5D3 ss: esp: 0010:001FCA errcod=0000 flags=0001 0046 NoC 2r Int Dis Down Trap Dis eax=A2D275D ebx=03013B3 ecx=00117 edx=0000002 dis=0010 es=0010 edi=F00030B esi=00051D66 ebp=0006FF0 cr 0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=000 HUH???? any suggestions?
  5. by the way I meant THANKS, not hanks...
  6. WOw...you must have read my mind, there is a MUCH newer version of my BIOS, but as I can't log in at all, I have no clue how I'd install it. I made an ISO out of the file and tried to run the computer from it but it didn't work, I even pressed f12 a startup and ran the Cd Drive, any ideas on how to install it? Well, I guess it doesn't matter right now because this silly laptop no longer detects the Cd or doesn't want to, after the Press any key to boot message, it hangs then goes to the black screen of death: we're sorry..blah blah blah...youur computer didn't start correctly, and when I choose one of the four options: normal, safe mode, safe mode comman prompt, safe mode networking, they all hang and never respond....
  7. hanks cluberti, but they couldn't do anything about it, I wanted to try using the recovery console, but I kept getting these errors and Setup exited out and restarted: 1) i got this error first, acpi.sys is corrupted but now get this: 2)file acpi.sys caused an unexpected error (47872) a line 5964 in d:\xpsprtm\bas\boot\etup.c. anybody know what to do? from searching online it says it's a ACPI problem in the BIOS and to turn it off, but I can't find it in my BIOS, by the way, it's a IBM Thinkpad R31 Laptop.
  8. u r such a cursed loser...yeah...i was bored...

  9. Mijzelf, Thank you for the suggestion, but I tried this and there was still no response.
  10. Hi, You may rememember me from my previous posts about activation, viruses, and safe mode issues-that was my mom's laptop and I've given up on it, but now there are problems with my laptop I turned my laptop on and it gave me this error: Windows Product Activation: A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code: 0x8007007b. and then logged me out. HUH? How random is that? I didn't reinstall anything or mess around, i just turned off my laptop because it froze. So, I went to school, used a computer there and I found my error, but not with the error code I had. I did find them separately though. For the first part of the error,(Windows Product Activation: A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer.) I found a bunch of things about Windows Product Activation and what to do, I booted into Safe mode and NONE OF THEM worked. For the error code:(Error Code: 0x8007007b.) I found things that had nothing to do with my problem, WELL, for the first part of the error(Error Code: 0x8007007b.) I came across a website that said it might be a CD Drive problem, so like the id*** I am, I did what they said to do in the registry, rebooted but now when I try to login in, it does, but automatically logs me out... So I'm screwed and cannot login whatsoever, Normal and Safe Mode with Networking give me the error:Windows Product Activation: A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code: 0x8007007b. and log me out and Safe Mode and Safe Mode Command Prompt log me out immediately, SO...what do I do? Praise God that i had a feeling I wouldn't be able to log in and i wrote down the Product Key and important system info(which is at home, as I have classes all day) SO..hopefully I won't need that info to help anyone who wants to help me and hopefully it won't involve the Windows XP cd, as my dad took it, and yes I have turned the house upside down looking for it(he blames me for my mom's laptop (rightfully so) and for mine(not my fault at all) and REFUSES to give it back and told me to buy my own and as a first-yearcollege student I don't have $150+ AT ALL to spare) SO any suggestions on how to get back in... THANKS A BUNCH! My error in its entirety could NOT be found on Microsoft.com or anywhere else, so I'm REALLY confused as to how it happened)
  11. Hi, Basically my sister's computer is messed up, it stays on the Windows 98 screen forever(I left it on for two days to test, never moved forward) So, I tried pressing F8 at startup and none of the options except for safe mode and command prompt respond, and safe mode: looped an error message about scandisk/chkdsk/whatever being stopped with the Windows 98 screen and command prompt either ignores commands or they don't work: as in I tried scanreg, and the screen was blue and at the top said registry checker, but the command prompt was still there and you could type in commands(weird, huh?) and when I typed in A:\(my floppy disk drive)Setup, it said: "not ready error reading drive a: abort, retry, ignore, and only abort responded so, with the computer not responding normally, looping in safe mode and giving different responses in command prompt, I decided to reinstall Windows 98 Second Edition: one problem though, the computer ignores my Startup Disk and CD(yet on the startup loadng screen says it dectects my CD drive and Floppy Drive and the respective drive lights flash on at startup) I checked the CMOS stuff(I pressed DEL at startup) and the boot sequence is: A, C, ASCI and the startup floppy disk seeker is enabled, as well as the CD Drive is recognized... I've tried other startup disks and the computer ignored them to and stayed on the Windows 98 screen, so WHAT DO I DO? so, to clarify, my problems are: 1) The computer does not startup 2)none of the startup options work, and if they do, don't help 3)my CD and startup disks aren't detected... so basically my sister's computer is a vegetable, NOTHING works... how can I get it to startup the Disk and CD, so I can reinstall and my sister can be happy? Any help would be MUCH appreciated..THANKS! by the way, sorry if this was adressed before, but I've searched online and this forum and can't find anyone else with this problem...
  12. thanks 4 the suggestion, but part of the problem is that my computer's cd drive doesn't respond to the cd, or any cd for that matter. basically everyhting is unistalled, internet, cd drive, etc(or maybe that's just a part of safe mode)...
  13. actually there is no error message, the "loading up your settings" window stays on the screen forever and it never loads, all other boot options don't work, except for safe command prompt, and even that'a a gamble as sometimes it stays on the drivers/mup.sys screen forever...and so the computer has 2 be restarted(after a half hour, u realize nothings' going to happen and restart it...sigh) i could try 2 fix it, if only safe mode didn't close down everyhting, so i can't even find out what the problem is...
  14. Hi, the only way that my computer will load is if it's in safe mode command prompt... i would have been able to fix the problem by now, if not for the "desktop" error message that shows up every 30 secs and closes EVERYTHING....and what's annoying it keeps asking me if i want 2 go to system restore.... SYSTEM RESTORE DOESN'T EVEN WORK IN SAFE MODE! either way, it's corrupted(system restore)... how do i stop this nonsense from CONSTANTLY closing my work, with this message i will NEVER get 2 fix my computer....
  15. thanks, i got rid of the virus, but now my laptop won't boot from the cd, but runs them when logged in(of course i can only access safe mode cmd prompt),...? what do i do now? i want to do a repair install or just run chkdsk, becuase that worked b4, but can't due to this werid cd issue...
  16. the harddrive was sticking out a bit and causing the os not detected message to appear, so i checked aout the computer and oh so slighty, it was sticking out, i stuck it back in, and it now runs, but doesn't run the windows xp installation cd at startup, also, i made a slipstreamed cd on another computer to install sp2, but if it doesn't detect cd's at startup, what will i do? i've been having many issues with xp, well now, my computer does not run the windows xp installtio cd at startup, i used to get the "press any ket to boot from cd", now it doesn't appear, and just boots into windows normally, strangely, when logged in, it detects all cds, so how do i force the computer to run the cd at startup, becuase i want to do a repair install.... by the way, have an IBM thinkpad r31 laptop, i kno this is a bit confusing, but basically, for some reason, installation cds do not run at startup, but in windows, it detects cds fine. how do i fix this, was it the hard drive? EDIT: and for some reason, the device manager field is blank, and i tried the cd-rom drive thing from microsoft with computer manager and event viewer, but it gave me an error message about accessing the system...
  17. There was a virus on my computer that spewed forth hundreds of popups and fake system notification bubbles in my taksbar, on buting their virus infested software, which i removed. How did I know it was removed? when I restarted the computer, it was gone. So, after turning it off at the end of the day, the next day when i restarted it, it was for some reason, it was bck in the taskbar, but not spewing popups, unless I clicked on the bubble. ANyway, I decided to do a repair install, as the virus had also taken out all of the help files in every single program, on my computer,and also hoped the virus would be eradicated for good. WELL, the product key didn't work...what to do? i stumbled on a site that had a product key that supposedly would work, i had no other option, so i tried it an dit continued installation. at the end, it asked me if i wanted to do activation online, from the guides, i had read, i was to say no, as i was susceptible to the blaster worm, as service pack 2 had been uninstalled,so when it got to the login screen, i logged in and for some reason it goes straight to product activation, and i can't activate online, becuase it won't let me even get into windows to set up my wireless card. also, i don't want to call for the fact that the product key i got offline, would render me unhelpable. So, my question is aren't i supposed to have 30 days before it locks me out? and why didn't my original product key work? and what do i do now, i can only log in, by booting into safe mode w/command prompt, but every 5 secs, everything closes and a message from the desktop, like an id***, asks me if i want to use safe mode, or system restore, and i am getting quite fed up, what can i do, and what happened to my 30 days?!
