  1. Hi there, I am beginning a new project where I want to set up an online data backup server onto which friends and family can backup their data from remote locations. I was hoping to get some advice here. To start I want to decide on the client and host software that I am going to use. To date I have set up Open ssh on Windows 2003 and created a SFTP connection from an XP Machine running SyncBackPro by 2Brightsparks. Everything is working quite well. I have just run this over a LAN to start. Without getting into the nitty gritty of other aspects such as fixed IP's, UPS, Cooling, Redundancy etc etc I'd like to get some advice back on the software I am using. Any advice? Is there better software that I could be using?
  2. I am having a problem with my own laptop at the moment. Its quite strange. When accessing excel files on a file server and on my hard drive (by double clicking on the file) excel sometimes hangs for about 10 seconds. It happens for a range of spreadsheet sizes. However when i open excel, and point to the file that I want to open, it opens fine. Any suggestions on what could possible be the cause?
  3. Adding more RAM is on the to do list! The server was purchased two years ago simply as a file server. Whoever specced and purchased it never envisaged it to be more than fileserver. Program will be running a central database holding stock items info, CRM, accounts etc. It is SQL. Max 10 users. What about using a PCI controller card to create a hardware RAID? - (would this involve reloading the OS)
  4. The performance hit is something I am concerned with. I am installing an ERP program that 10 client machines will be accessing several times through out the day. I do not really want to have to purchase a new server with a controller card. Both disaster recovery AND performance are my main concerns. Any suggestions?
  5. Our current set up. We have a Dell PE830 with a P4 3 GHz CPU and 1GB RAM. We currently have only one standalone 250GB basic SATA disk that is partitioned 12GB for the O.S and the rest for a file server. I don't believe that it has a controller card. I am toying with the idea of setting up a software RAID 1 - mirroring. If I place a second drive of the same size or bigger into the machine, upgrade both disks to dynamic, should I be able to create the mirror using computer management?
  6. have you made any changes to user accounts?
  7. Try this. Open my documents. Go to Tools Go to Folder Options Choose the file types tab. Scroll down the list to doc. Make sure everything is as it should. Eg - Open with MS Word Hit Advanced. Make sure all the actions such as save, open, print new, etc are in the list.
  8. I echo the above post. A reinstall is not necessary here. A registry entry is to blame. Ccleaner for the win! As regards other firewalls = Comodo
  9. Hi, Im currently getting ready for the 70-271 exam. I am using microsofts "measure up" preparation cd that contains 300 preparation questions. Can anyone point me in the direction of (preferably free) preparation material. I know there is a lot out there but it is difficult to trawl through all the rubbish ones. Hoping someone here can advise on a good source. Cheers
