I am baffled beyond even knowing how to search for an answer here, if there is one: Installed xp corporate to an IDE HDD on a Dell 4400. I installed XPSP3 originally downloaded from MS but then taken from a USB onto this system. The OS failed to boot after the install. I put in the disc to reinstall but never am able to get to the second step - never get a 'press any key to boot from cd' message - the machine just keeps starting over at the first, fresh install. In the partition section there are two disks listed, though there is only one in the case. After running Puppy Linux I was able to find that the second disk is the Memorex USB that was on the system when it crashed - though it is no longer connected. I am always installing to the installed Hard Drive, yet I can only guess that this second 'phantom' drive is keeping the system from rebooting properly to complete the install. How do I get rid of that second 'phantom' drive? Where is that information stored? Thanks in advance.
