well has anybody an idea about the error message, trying to access the ramdrive:

insufficient system resources exists to complete the requested service.

I ran into this in the very beginning.

Scrap everything you have from previous PE versions.

You will need to re-copile all optional components form the SP1 ver of 2003 Server.

Start new. They only files you will be saving are the drivers you add in yourself.

That is correct - noreboot has existed since before WinPE - so thus only exists to "not reboot" the OS you are installing with.

If you use NoReboot you must issue the EXIT command yourself in your scripting to cause PE to reboot and continue the install.

Basically...

In the Startnet.cmd I do a WSCRIPT.EXE MYSCRIPT.VBS.

That holds the startned.cmd open.

Then the next line is EXIT which causes PE to reboot once the VBS ends.

You should install NTFS, not FAT32 with conversion. The end result isn't as efficient if you start with FAT32.

That depends on your application.

The tools I use do not Format NTFS properly. So Fat32 is what I use innitially.

This allow me to create a formatted 10 gig partition or up to a 500 Gig partition Very fast. The 10 gig partition takes less than 15 seconds.

Yes it extends the build time a but because of the conversion. But I accept it.

This is not an issue when I do imaging.

I saw some interesting comments in your post.

The extendOEMPartition switch does work under XP. Our desktop team uses it with every build. I also use it with Windows 2000 and 2003 Server installs.

You may want to change your logic. I found it best to create a FAT32 partition and let the install process convert it to NTFS on it's own. I found that when I created an NTFS partition using powerquests PQIDEPLOY, that the OS didn't like the format. So now I allow the setup to convert during install (it's an unattend switch) it gave me a fully supported File structure by Microsoft.

Don't forget.. after you create and format the partition, you have to MOUNT it to the PE OS as a drive letter so it can be written to.

I think that alot of people are forgetting that Windows PE (either Barts version or the Microsoft OPK) is a means to an end. It was never ment to be used as an operating system with application suites installed. Thats why there are so many limitations built in.

PE was origionally only avaliable to OEM vendors and application developers. Which is why it is so basic and customizable. Development is required to produce the end product.

Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Support and license compliance being the biggest factor in the corporate community.

Sounds like you don't have a mass controller driver.

IBM is notorious for revving the drivers every other week.

Make sure you have firmware and driver in lock step.

You are correct, but that remove list blows away network support and everything. The documentation only says to refer to the list. I figured that with so many people using a RAM disk and what not, that they would try to reduce the size of their images. Maybe not.

Microsoft provides two files called SERVERSP1-REMOVELIST.TXT and XPSP2-REMOVELIST.TXT in the PE 2005 build.

I believe there is also a file called for PE 2004. Look in the SAMPLES directory on the PE CD.

The Help files also has documentation of reducing the size of PE.

New feature on the way!

The one missing part is the ability to specify the block size for the Dload.

With a forced 8k block size.. a 150 meg image loads in 25 seconds! The default (fixed) auto setting takes over 4 minutes to Dload.

I was asked by the PE product manager to submit a bug repoort about this. MS is going to try and squeek this into the SP1 release. But if it does not make it... it will be in the longhorn version.

I'm still docking out my Linux PXE server config.

I do. So I keep a table that knows what model of server requires a system partition. It sets a variable in my script So now have 2 options.

Disk 1 Part 1 and Disk 1 Part 2.

There are 2 sub routines. Based on the varables... I know which one to run.

Press Any Key is not something you can change by editing a config file.

you would need to use a hex editor and modify system files.

I don't recommend it.

[Anyone gotten VB6 working in win2k3 sp1 PE ?]

Would it be possible for you to elaborate a little, cause I thought I was doing it correctly and its not working for me but on the Old WinPE my Vb6 app works fine.

Download the VB runtimes.

Extract the files.

Copy them to your PE structure (system32 dir) before you create your ISO.

I didn't do anyhting special.

FYI... On another note ... RC2 of Server SP1 was released yerterday.

I have not gone to beta place yet but that means there is a new build of PE too.

I was really excited about the ramdrive and what not in the new winpe, I even got my ramdisk working inside of the ramdrive so I can write to files, but now that my vb6 app wont run and I cant get my autorun to work (which is the piller of light in my setup) I'm losing faith. 

Hope someone has some ideas.

My custom VB app runs just fine.

All I did was download the latest VB6 runtimea and put the files in the correct place.

[PE Driver Issue]

You'll be happy to know I learned quite a bit about PE and drivers. Chatted with an MS guru and he gave me the 411. Seems the machine I was building the image on was the ONLY one that the default drivers didn't work on. I added an updated NIC driver and it worked just fine, but the video is still hosed. We have at least a dozen different flavors of IBM machines here and my build works perfectly on all the models EXCEPT the one I was testing on. Go figure....

Thats no big suprise.

IBM is notorious for updating the driver/firmware any chance they get. In fact. You have to sync the firmware and driver for the ServRaid controller. IBM is the only manufacturer I know that does not use a default Video driver.

HP's are easy. It just works!

Looks like an older file version or mismatch took place.

System file mismatch caused by partially restoring the system from backup media might cause this error (some backup programs do not restore files that they determine are in use). Always use backup software that is Windows XP Professional compatible.

Been there ... Done that...

If you are using 2005. START OVER!

I made that mistake. Save nothing from your previous version.

Generate all new files.

I boot a computer in WinPE (using RIS), and all is working, but I need to know my Mac address and my IP configuration.

How can I do ?

Ipconfig doesn't work : "An internal error occured: The system cannot find the file specified."

I can PXE boot Winpe 2005 in a HP DL360G3 With HT enabled just fine.

I also did it on an IBM Blade 2.8GHZ with HT enabled.

I can tell you we had to use a different TFTP server because of the file size. (158 meg ISO) and we had to change the block size.
