  1. I don't believe in AntiVirus on Vista at all. When Vista was RTM Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin was quoted as saying: "I'll give you an example: My son, seven years old, runs Windows Vista, and, honestly, he doesn't have an antivirus system on his machine. His machine is locked down with parental controls, he can't download things unless it's to the places that I've said that he could do, and I'm feeling totally confident about that. That is quite a statement. I couldn't say that in Windows XP SP2." "My favorite feature within Windows Vista, is called ASLR (Address Space [Layout] Randomization). What it does is, each Windows Vista machine is slightly different than every other Windows Vista machine. So even if there is a remote exploit on one machine, and a worm tries to jump from one machine to another, the probability of that actually succeeding is very small. "Please don't misunderstand me: This is an escalating situation. The hackers are getting smarter, there's more at stake, and so there's just no way for us to say that some perfection has been achieved. But I can say, knowing what I know now, I feel very confident." I'm not saying it will be this way forever I'm merely observing that IF you are behind a properly configured router/firewall and IF you leave UAC switched on and ALWAYS make sure your system is up to date and perhaps take a few extra precautions like perhaps running Firefox 3 with Adblock and excercise caution with attachments and files from dubious sources then the chances of an up to date copy of Vista x64 Sp1 becoming infected with a virus are currently very small indeed in my humble opinion. In fact I would even go so far as to say that even XPSP3 is probably reasonably safe against infection provided the same precautions are used. The fact is, Antivirus companies profit from fear. many people will make sure their Kaspersky is running and up to date but when you say "when was the last time you ran windows update?" they give you a blank look. Quite often they have never even seen the windows update page but the Antivirus Fear Marketing Brigade makes sure their Symantec/ McAfee/ Avast/ AVG is of course installed and working. These days the vast majority of infected computers seems to be from people who routinely click away the update notification and treat is nothing more than an annoyance. Of course i'm not suggesting for one moment that my fellow Vlite/Nlite enthusiats behave in this way but I am generally in contempt of the entire AntiVirus industry as a whole. Surely as with ones health versus insurance that prevention is way more desireable than the cure. pardon my anti antivirus rant, amen!
  2. Vista Workshop: More RAM, More Speed : Windows Vista With 8 GB http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/vista-workshop,1775.html This article explains how if you install 8gb of cheap memory you can disable the swapfile forcing everything into memory. for those too skeptical to read the concept is that vista x64 uses up to 5gb of memory just for itself. obviously it makes a fat swapfile and resorts to that to give the amount of memory it needs to run smoothly. if you have 8gb or more, you can safely disable the swapfile altogether forcing everything into ram which means the drive only spins up to loads new apps into ram and not to swap things in and out of memory. According to Toms Hardware, if you have 8gb then there is at least 3gb spare at all times which is enough even if you intend to run Photoshop CS4 and edit multi gigabyte images. Incidentally because Apples run x86 there will be no x64 Photoshop in the near future which presumably means people wanting to work on VAST images will all be running Vista X64. Conclusion: "Our testing brought us to a clear conclusion: if you often use several memory hungry applications simultaneously, then there's really no way around upgrading your system to 8 GB. Working with applications, and especially switching between them, is much more efficient than with a typical 2 GB configuration. Also, it would even be feasible to run a modern 3D game that already takes up more than 1 GB of memory by itself while having another application with a large memory footprint running in the background. Thus, load times in Windows are a thing of the past, as is the constant swapping of Windows components to the hard drive." The second i read this I raced out and bought 8gb and never looked back. I now run 8gb with swapfile disabled on both my machines and i've never experienced any problems. Cheers to my Nuhi enabled brothers! PS: Nuhi on behalf of myself and everyone I know whos enjoying the benefits of of your work, thank you!
  3. G'day fellow Vlite/Nlite fiends and Lord Nuhi, I also am experiencing BSOD at the beginning of hotfix incorporation [or without hotfix integration!] the facts: using a an already vlited Vista x61 Sp1 made from the MSDN en_windows_vista_with_service_pack_1_x64_dvd_x14-29595.iso iso. i *NEVER* run an antivirus. As Monsieur Gates once said "my 7yo son runs vista with no antivirus, there is simply no need" I used autopatcher to download all post Sp1 hotfixes on 11/10/08 Australian time totalling 56 hotfixes and 6 updates. If I completely disable the hotfix integration I STILL get a BSOD maybe halfway through after I click apply. I am adding four drivers for P5Q Deluxe and P5K Premium [same BSOD without these] the computer is a non overclocked Q6600 with 8gb but i'm getting the same error on a E7200 machine also with 8gb [running same vlited Sp1 x64 install] I'm unable to make out which hotfix is causing the BSOD and examining the event logs only shows an unexpected restart I intially had 6001.18000.080118-1840-kb3aikl_en.iso installled but have since uninstalled it and am just using 1.20 with the dll. The windows i am using is completely up to date apart from that tinker thing and some optional sound scheme. my previous working Vista X64 Sp1 install disc was also made from the same MSDN iso using 1.16 i'm at my wits end, I have been trying to make a new VLited Vista X64 Sp1 on and off for a few months now. Do I really have to have to install a vanilla Vista x64 install and then use that to make a new custom vista?
