  1. I've just successfully used the image on a different computer with sysprep. I didn't use the steps you provided but just clicked on OOBE (Out Of the Box Experience) and checked generalize. The computer did not shut-down but stayed in Windows but suddenly wanted to know if my network was home, office or public and the Windows Update Policy was reset. So I just shutdown the computer manually and connected the harddisk to my WAIK computer and used imagex to make the WIM image. I'm currently trying the image on a third computer with different hardware. Thanks!
  2. No I didn't sysprep, I've seen some example on how to do this but I'll try it first using C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe like Windows XP. Or do you have a better way? I'll start testing this out right away and report back if I have any results.
  3. Guys, I'm having a bit of a problem with my WIM images. My company would like to deploy a default image to computers we sell to customers though Windows Deployment Services. I've managed to make an WIM image in VMWare Workstation (imagex) (so it would be easy to make changes to the image using snapshots) and these work perfectly on other VMware Workstations however if I deploy the image on a physical computer it will deploy but gives an 0x000007b error once it boots up for the first time. This 0x000007b error will probably appear because the IDE or SATA controller is different from the computer from which I've created the image. If I make an image from a physical computer I can deploy the image with succes on the same computer but not an any other. I'm OS I'm trying to deploy is Windows 7 Home Premium X64. Can anybody tell me how to solve this problem. Thanks, r00ster
  4. Guys, MSFN has helped me in the past, and I'm sure you guys can help me again. I have a working WDS server with Windows PE and WDS images for Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional. What you have to do to make a WDS image of Windows XP professional is to Sysprep the installation and use the mini-setup option so that all the permissions, users, settings are being "deleted" so that the image can be used on different computers. Today I wanted to make a WDS image of a Windows XP Home installation, so i tried to do the same here. It seems that Home doesn't support the mini-setup option (grayed out), and the only two options I have is to Reseal or Factory mode. When you Reasel the installation it doesn't throw away the created user and doesn't restore the settings. So I can make the image, but when i deploy the image all the user information is also copied onto the new computer. I thought of going into safe mode and deleting this user (logging in as administrator) but there is no way you can delete this user (the only "normal" user). If a company has Windows XP Home computers, I'm sure they wouldn't make WDS images for all of them.. One of you should have had the same problem.... Thanks, r00ster
  5. Yes, i've tried /d argument.. What I forgot to tell is that I sometimes skip a day or two, so then it still copies all the files, so /d will work if I'm able to do it every day (which i'm not ).
  6. Hi, I'm looking for a way to automate the copy of a windows backup file (BKF). My server (WIN2K3 SBS) is configured to leave 3 versions of the backup on a external harddisk so I can retrieve files that were previously deleted. I also would like to copy the latest created BKF file to another external harddisk that I can take back home with me so in case of a fire or theft I have an extra copy. The BKF file is large (over 90 Gb) and takes a few hours to be created, this is done every night from 02:00 till 7:00 in the morning. What I would like to accomplish is that during lunch time I click on a vb script that copies the newest BKF file to another external harddisk so that a few hour later I can unplug the harddisk and take it home. Because there are 3 files of over 90 Gb the normal "xcopy *.* f:\" line will take to long to copy all the files to the harddisk. Can somebody help me out with a simple script that will copy only the newest BKF to my external harddisk. Thanks, r00ster
  7. Ok, It all seems to work.. The only problem I ran into is that my test machine is x86, so the Windows 2008 Beta 3 (from my MS ActionPack) which has only a x64 boot.wim file couldn't create a x86 discover images from my capture image of Windows XP Pro 32bit. So I've taken the Vista DVD which has a x86 boot.wim and used that one instead, I'm currently making a new capture-image to test it, but I'm sure it will work because I was able to get into the discover image I created and was able to pick an install-image (only not the one I needed). Thanks guys! : it would have taken me another week to get this one to work! I hope 2Tall is also able to get this to work. r00ster
  8. Thanks for the reply, It seems logical once you figured out what MS means with Discover image, I've just tried the steps you posted but i ran into another problem. What i did: I added the bootimage of VISTA PE (86x) F1_WINPE.WIM which is 160.537 kB in size. When it was succesfully added I right clicked on it and selected "Create Discover Image" I followed the wizzard and named the discover image "discover_image.wim" and left "Reaction of Windows Deployment Server"(translated from the Dutch WDS) blank. The next screen seems promising , the status bar is filling up nicely but when it is half-way it stoped and gave an error message , unfortunatly I've installed the Dutch version of WDS so I cannot give you the exact error in english but it says something like "The Installimage cannot be used to make a Discover-installimage because it does not have the required binairy values for the WDS-client." I've tried google but because WDS is still not well documented i'm unable to get the right answer for this problem. What can I do to solve this little problem? r00ster.
  9. 2Tall, I've got the exact same problem, I followed all the steps but I get stuck when I get back into the bootmanger, there is no way to install the install image of Windows XP onto my test computer. Did you have any luck on your end? r00ster.
